Segmental dynamics in polymer electrolytes

2002

Polymer dynamics in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–salt mixtures is investigated by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). In a previous study, we reported QENS data from the NEAT spectrometer (BENSC) that evidenced, for the first time, a dynamic heterogeneity in PEO–salt mixtures induced by salt addition. This finding is supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations carried out by Borodin et al. In agreement with MD simulations, our QENS data revealed two distinct processes: a fast motion corresponding to the bulk polymer and a slower relaxation, which we attribute to formation of PEO–cation complexes. In this paper we present new QENS data from the high-resolution spectrometer I…

Conformation of Polyethylene Glycol inside Confined Space: Simulation and Experimental Approaches

2021

The modification of the inner nanopore wall by polymers is currently used to change the specific properties of the nanosystem. Among them, the polyethylene glycol (PEG) is the most used to prevent the fouling and ensure the wettability. However, its properties depend mainly on the chain structure that is very difficult to estimate inside this confined space. Combining experimental and simulation approaches, we provide an insight to the consequence of the PEG presence inside the nanopore on the nanopore properties. We show, in particular, that the cation type in the electrolyte, together with the type of electrolyte (water or urea), is at the origin of the ion transport modification in the n…

Micro- and nanostructuring of oligo- and polythiophenes in two and three dimensions

2003

Abstract Oligothiophenes bearing methacrylic functionalities were two-dimensional-structured by stamping techniques. The localised monomer was hardened by radical polymerisation in UV light. The structures in micrometre- and nanometre-scale were characterised electrochemically by SECM. An inverse polymer opal with extremely high inner surface and periodicity was obtained by localising the photosensitive oligothiophene within an opal template of SiO 2 beads. Cyclic voltammetry of the oligothiophenes in aprotic solvents was carried out to examine possible electrochemical conversions. A self-assembling technique for lateral and vertical structuring of polythiophenes with pendant sulfonate and …

Structure Formation of Polymeric Building Blocks: Complex Polymer Architectures

2013

This chapter describes macromolecules with a complex structure, their defined aggregation in solution, their adsorption to surfaces, and their possible aggregation on surfaces. The term “complex structure” implies that the macromolecules show different, distinct structural elements or building blocks on a supra-atomic length scale. Key to understanding the complex structure of macromolecules, their aggregation, and adsorption to surfaces are intra- and intermolecular interactions such as van der Waals, electrostatic, π–π interactions, and hydrogen bonds.

Polydithienothiophenes: Two new conjugated materials with narrow band gap

1997

Abstract The electrochemical polymerisation of dithieno[3,4-b:3',2'-d]thiophene and dithieno[3,4-b:2',3'-d]thiophene leads to conjugated materials with narrow band gap in which the p- and n-doping processes are possible in organic electrolytes. The spectroelectrochemical study of these polymers is reported.

Inside Front Cover: Redox-Tunable Defects in Colloidal Photonic Crystals (Adv. Mater. 20/2005)

2005

The inside front cover illustrates reversible tuning of an intragap transmitting state induced by redox cycling, accomplished using a redox-active polyferrocenylsilane polyelectrolyte multilayer planar defect embedded in a colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) synthesized by a bottom–up method combining colloidal self-assembly and microcontact printing. In work reported on p. 2455 by Manners, Ozin, and co-workers, the wavelength position of the defect state can be changed by changing the oxidation state of the ferrocene moieties in the polymer backbone. This could find applications in electrochemically tunable microcavities, and—if light emitters are incorporated—electrochemically tunable CPC-ba…

Electrochemical performance of Na2FeP2O7/C cathode for sodium-ion batteries in electrolyte with fluoroethylene carbonate additive

2022

Abstract Solution synthesis was used to prepare pristine Na2FeP2O7 and Na2FeP2O7/C composite cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, using glucose as a carbon source. While the pristine Na2FeP2O7 displays capacity of only 45 mAh/g due to the relatively large grain size, the addition of carbon increases the capacity to up to 92 mAh/g (95% of the theoretical 97 mAh/g capacity) with excellent rate capability, as 44 mAh/g capacity is still retained even at 20 C (1.94 A/g) current. The optimal content of carbon was found to be 4.8%. The initial capacity of 81 mAh/g is fully retained after 500 cycles at 1 C, indicating excellent cycle life. Measurements were carried out in 1 M NaClO4 salt in …

Detection of polymer compatibility by means of self-organization: poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)

2021

Information on the miscibility of different polymers A and B on a molecular level is important in many ways. However, along the traditional lines this knowledge is difficult and time consuming to achieve. The current study presents a simple alternative, based on the determination of the intrinsic viscosities (specific hydrodynamic volume of isolated coils) for blend solutions in a common solvent. In the case of incompatible polymers, isolated coils contain one macromolecule only, either A or B. In contrast, compatible polymers form mixed isolated coils, because of favorable interactions. The present investigation was carried out for the system water/poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(sodium 4-polyst…

Effect of the supramolecular interactions on the nanostructure of halloysite/biopolymer hybrids: A comprehensive study by SANS, fluorescence correlat…

2020

The structural properties of halloysite/biopolymer aqueous mixtures were firstly investigated by means of combining different techniques, including small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), electric birefringence (EBR) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Among the biopolymers, non-ionic hydroxypropylcellulose and polyelectrolytes (anionic alginate and cationic chitosan) were selected. On this basis, the specific supramolecular interactions were correlated to the structural behavior of the halloysite/biopolymer mixtures. SANS data were analyzed in order to investigate the influence of the biopolymer adsorption on the halloysite gyration radius. In addition, a morphological descript…
