A new rationale for not picking low hanging fruits: The separation of ownership and control

Recent attempts at explaining the energy-efficiency gap rely on considerations related to organizational and behavioral/cognitive failures. In this paper, we build on the strategic delegation literature to advance a complementary explanation. It is shown that strategic market interaction may encourage business owners to instill a bias against energy efficiency in managerial compensation contracts. Since managers respond to financial incentives, their decisions will reflect this bias, resulting in lack of investment.

Party Leadership Selection in Latvia: Divergent Practices of Precursory Delegation

The pattern of political competition in Latvia has been notably stable. A majority of right-of-centre parties represent the interests of ethnic Latvians and faces a minority of left-of-centre parties claiming to advocate the interests of East Slavic minorities. However, actors in this pattern have changed notably. Every parliamentary election since the restoration of independence has generated at least one new party represented in the Latvian parliament, with the turnover of members of parliament oscillating between 25 per cent and 60 per cent.

Selection by committee: Anonymity and gratitude

Abstract What kind of candidate is selected into a job when the principal has to appoint a committee to measure the candidates’ ability and select a winner? We find that if the committee takes into account the candidate’s gratitude towards them, a candidate with less than first best ability will be selected. A relevant exception may occur if the first best is the overall best candidate. First best selection is always achieved if the committee is anonymous to the candidates. If the committee is not detached enough from the candidates then delegation fares even worse than random selection.

Journalist–source relationships and interactions are interpreted in this study as crucial mechanisms for linking different arenas in a deliberative system. To unravel these source networks, 106 semi-standardized interviews with journalists as well as public relations (PR) professionals from government delegations and non-governmental organizations were conducted on-site three United Nations (UN) climate change conferences between 2010 and 2013, and an online survey was administered during the conference in 2015.
