Medico-legal implications of sleep apnoea syndrome: driving license regulations in Europe.

Family-student balance: a qualitative study about limitations of university mothers
2016
The balance between family and student life, viewed as the possibility of being a mother and university student at the same time, is still not seen as something usual in higher education. This leads to discrimination against student mothers compared with other students. In this study, using a qualitative, narrative-based methodology based on semi-structured interviews, we analysed the beliefs and attitudes of a total of 73 university students. They reflect on aspects of the academic career that restrict the student-family balance. The students’ opinions revealed the limitations on the possibilities of having children, included some proposals for improvements to the legislation, and their at…

Influencing for Results: Bees, Beekeepers and Norwegian Pesticide Legislation
2019
Abstract Many who are worried about the disappearance of pollinating insects, question the role of pesticides and point to the need for stricter legislation regulating the use of these chemicals. This article studies the years between 1933 and 1953, when legislation regulating the use of pesticides against insects and weeds was established in Norway. It analyses how knowledge about effects of pesticides circulated from Norwegian honeybees, to their beekeepers and their network. It suggests that the actors’ position and standing influenced what knowledge they put into circulation and what knowledge they suppressed. A knowledge hierarchy meant that some actors were powerful enough to influenc…
A brief history of the formation of DNA databases in forensic science within Europe.
2001
The introduction of DNA analysis to forensic science brought with it a number of choices for analysis, not all of which were compatible. As laboratories throughout Europe were eager to use the new technology different systems became routine in different laboratories and consequently, there was no basis for the exchange of results. A period of co-operation then started in which a nucleus of forensic scientists agreed on an uniform system. This collaboration spread to incorporate most of the established forensic science laboratories in Europe and continued through two major changes in the technology. At each step agreement was reached on which systems to use. From the beginning it was realise…
Considerations on the Update of the Risk Assessment Document During the Pandemic State by COVID-19 in Italy
2021
Immediately after the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic (which had risen to the level of a pandemic according to the World Health Organization), the question arose whether or not to update the risk assessment, which, as required by Legislative Decree 81/2008, with the consequent updating of the prevention measures. In light of these forecasts, we asked ourselves whether the risk of coronavirus infection should be taken into account by the employer by updating the risk assessment or not. An in-depth analysis of current legislation has led to the conclusion that the biological risk from SARS-CoV-2 is to be considered specific only in health-related activities, in other activities it can be …
The main reforms of the Spanish financial system
2012
This chapter aims to explore how the main legislation affecting the Spanish financial system evolved over the course of the 20th century. After a short introduction, we will examine below the first three of these four phases in chronological order.
Camorra e mafie di mezzo in alcuni recenti contributi delle scienze sociali
2018
Interacting with the lively debate on petitions and the various forms of appeal to the authorities written in different spatial and temporal contexts, the article deals with the analysis of a group of “discrimination” requests addressed to the General Directorate for Demography and Race by a sample of female Italian citizens qualified as belonging to the “Jewish race” in Autumn 1938. Women’s petitions represented a minority within the broader corpus of requests for derogation from the Anti-Semitic Fascist legislation. They are nonetheless a source of great importance, both to illuminate the relevance of the “discrimination” procedures from the persecuted point of view, and to shed fresh lig…
