Autonomy and ICT in Environmental Education
2012
[EN] This paper aims at tackling the need for appropriate knowledge when addressing Environmental Education (EE) from an autonomous and critical viewpoint. It also aims at showing the need for the appropriation of ICT with a view to foster the perception of the environmental complexity, as well as the construction of a new kind of environmental knowledge and awareness. These two factors should be capable of modifying the way human beings behave and relate to their environment. Before looking at effective ways to achieve this goal, a suitable praxis should be developed in such a way that a new environmental awareness emerges. This new praxis should in turn help foster the autonomy of both ed…
The Role of Social and Collaborative Networks in the Development of in-House Multimedia Language Learning Materials
2012
The development of in-house language learning materials has being going on for many decades. In the past, it was difficult for language teachers worldwide to share their in-house materials with other teachers, and so was having access to the materials developed by others. This often produced a feeling of isolation and, very frequently, provoked a duplication of efforts and a bigger investment of time. However, thanks to the Web 2.0 teachers and practitioners worldwide can communicate with each other and share experiences and materials. While this aspect of the so-called Social Web has being successfully exploded in the past few decades, especially in the case of online communities of teache…

At the Risk of Exaggerating : How Do Listeners React to Hyperbole?
2003
The intensive focus on the reception process of figures of speech, in terms of the psychological processes operated on their understanding, explains that nowadays a crucial limitation in figurative language theories is the production process of non-literal forms, as joint activities between speaker and hearer. Since the object of study has traditionally been the figurative sentence, either in isolation or in the context of an artificially constructed text, it is not surprising that the collaborative nature of figures has been overlooked. This paper focuses on hyperbole, a long neglected trope, despite its pervasive frequency of occurrence and co-occurrence with other tropes in everyday spee…
Deon Meyer's Dead before dying: voices and representation of the new South Africa
2012
Platonic theories of the perfect state and the human soul in Gulliver's voyage to Houyhnmland
2013
This article discusses the various ways in which Platonic philosophy shapes Houyhnhnmland as described in Voyage IV of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver's Travels. As a means to do so, it takes into consideration Plato’s Republic and his theories on the perfect state, as well as the Greek philosopher’s dialogue Phaedrus, which contains the Platonic theory of the tripartite human soul. The final claim of this article is that both the Houyhnhnms and the Yahoos are “pure souls” made up of just one of the three soul components pointed out by Plato (namely, the appetites in the case of the Yahoos, and the rational part in that of the Houyhnhnms). In contrast with both, man constitutes an ambiguous and c…
How conceptual structure impinges on constructional behavior: the case of "give" verbs
2012
This article aims to cast light on the constructional behavior of nine of Levins (1993) give verbs, i.e. feed, lease, lend, loan, pay, peddle, rent, sell, and trade, in the ditransitive and dative constructions. This paper also proposes onomasiological hierarchies for these verbs on the basis of Faber and Mairal's (1999) lexematics-oriented taxonomies. My findings concur with Levin (1993) and Faber and Mairal's (1999) hypothesis according to which the internal semantic parameters of a given verb function as predictors of that verbs syntactic representations. In a hierarchy of predicates, the hyponyms display the same complementation patterns as their genus or superordinate predicate. Nev…

To this end, a corpus of tourist management reports has been compiled and through a semi-automatic extraction methodology, the identification and classification of the candidates for neologisms has been carried out to study the most frequently used word formation mechanisms and offer a perspective of these new words that helps the translation of tourism texts.
