Oral granular cell tumor: a study of twelve cases in a Brazilian population

2010

Objectives: Analyze clinic and epidemiological aspects of all Oral Granular cell tumor (GCT) during a 5-year period in a Brazilian population. Study design: clinical and treatment outcome data of patients with oral GCT seen at the Division of Stomatology, School of Dentistry, Federal University of Ceara, Brazil, between January 2001 and December 2005 were reviewed. Results: during the analyzed period, 6231 oral lesions were collected from files of different anatomo-pathology laboratories situated in the state of Ceara, Brazil. Of all cases, only 12 of GCT were diagnosed. The lesion was more common in female patients, with a mean age of 40.8 years, occurring mainly in tongue. Conclusion: Ora…

The post-endodontic periapical lesion: Histologic and etiopathogenic aspects

2007

Apical periodontitis is produced in the majority of cases by intraradicular infection. Treatment consists in the elimination of the infectious agents by endodontia. Even when carrying out a correct cleansing and filling of canals, it is possible that periapical periodontitis will persist in the form of an asymptomatic radiolucency, giving rise to the post-endodontic periapical lesion. The chronic inflammatory periapical lesion is the most common pathology found in relation to alveolar bone of the jaw. From the histological point of view, it can be classified as chronic periapical periodontitis (periapical granuloma), radicular cyst, and as scar tissue. The most frequent is the periapical gr…

A case series associated with different kinds of endo-perio lesions

2014

Pulpal and periodontal problems are responsible for more than half of the tooth mortality. There are some articles published in the literature about this issue. Many of them are quite old. There has been also lack of knowledge about the effect of endodontic treatment on the periodontal tissue healing and suitable treatment interval between endodontic and periodontal treatments. In this case report, different kinds of endo-perio lesion were treated with sequential endodontic and periodontal treatment. The follow-up radiographs showed complete healing of the hard and soft tissue lesions. The tooth with endo-perio lesions should be evaluated thoroughly in terms of any cracks and fracture, espe…

The analgesic-antiinflammatory extract fromAraujia sericifera lacks ulcerogenic activity on stress-gastric damage model

1995

The present study evaluates the ulcerogenic activity of the hexane extract from dry fruits of Araujia sericifera in an experimental model of cold-restraint stress. Treatment of rats with 200 mg/kg (i.p.) of hexane extract did not affect the gastric lesions induced by cold-restraint stress. However, it was confirmed that a dose of 300 mg/kg (i.p.) of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) which induced a similar analgesic-antiinflammatory effect, increased significantly the level of gastric damage. Thus, the hexane extract from the fruits of A. sericifera seems to possess analgesic-antiinflammatory properties which are not linked to gastrolesive effects.

Complement and Atherogenesis

1999

Abstract —Complement activation occurs in temporal correlation with the subendothelial deposition of LDL during early atherogenesis, and complement also plays a pathogenetic role in promoting lesion progression. Two lesion components have been identified that may be responsible for complement activation. First, enzymatic degradation of LDL generates a derivative that can spontaneously activate complement, and enzymatically degraded LDL (E-LDL) has been detected in the lesions. Second, C-reactive protein (CRP) colocalizes with complement C5b-9, as evidenced by immunohistological studies of early atherosclerotic lesions, so the possibility exists that this acute phase protein also fulfills a…

Metaplasticity of horizontal connections in the vicinity of focal laser lesions in rat visual cortex

2010

Focal cortical injuries are accompanied by a reorganization of the adjacent neuronal networks. An increased synaptic plasticity has been suggested to mediate, at least in part, this functional reorganization. Previous studies showed an increased long-term potentiation (LTP) at synapses formed by ascending fibres projecting onto layers 2/3 pyramidal cells following lesions in rat visual cortex. This could be important to establish new functional connections within a vertical cortical column. Importantly, horizontal intracortical connections constitute an optimal substrate to mediate the functional reorganization across different cortical columns. However, so far little is known about their p…

Primary intraosseous carcinoma of mandible: an update on review of literature with a case report

2010

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the jaws which is locally aggressive with quite poor prognosis. Overall and disease free survival is poor with almost 50% patients failing within first 2 years of follow up and reason can be attributed to the delayed diagnosis. But knowledge of the clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of PIOC allows accurate and early diagnosis of the lesion so that an early and appropriate treatment can be instituted for better prognosis. Here a typical case of PIOC of the mandible is presented and an attempt is made to discuss all possible differential diagnosis and an update on review of literature is presented. Our case…

A predictive function optimization algorithm for multi-spectral skin lesion assessment

2015

The newly introduced Kubelka-Munk Genetic Algorithm (KMGA) is a promising technique used in the assessment of skin lesions. Unfortunately, this method is computationally expensive due to its function inverting process. In the work of this paper, we design a Predictive Function Optimization Algorithm in order to improve the efficiency of KMGA by speeding up its convergence rate. Using this approach, a High-Convergence-Rate KMGA (HCR-KMGA) is implemented onto multi-core processors and FPGA devices respectively. Furthermore, the implementations are optimized using parallel computing techniques. Intensive experiments demonstrate that HCR-KMGA can effectively accelerate KMGA method, while improv…
