Forms and limits of therapeutic treatments of hereditary diseases in ancient Greece

2017

Not being epistemologically different from treatment of congenital diseases, the therapy of hereditary diseases has to be considered in its complex relationship with the concepts of nature and culture, and with the ideas of Greek authors about generation and education. As such, therapy of hereditary diseases can be described as the (often hopeless) attempt by the ancient, particularly Hippocratic physician to restore the health condition or to contrast the natural tendency of the patient to develop and give expression to his or her pathological inheritance. If for the Greek physician dietetics represents the most widely practised way of treating disaeses on a presumed inherited basis, the n…

Un'appartenenza vulnerabile. Il sentimento della storia in Properzio

2021

The cultural heritage of mythical tales connected to real places in Rome is the core inspiration for the fourth book of Propertian elegies. But which features or attitudes lay the ground for the construction of collective memory? In this paper I will try to focus on how Propertius works on selection and removal of Roman history’s events and characters as early as in the first three books of Elegies: in the Propertian sense of history, the “belonging to” and the “distance from” the social frameworks of memory are re-examined by concepts as betrayal and vulnerability of thick relations tying together citizens, soldiers, friends.

Una storia italiana: Giorgio e Isabella

2018

This paper focuses on the story of two dark-skinned Italians written for Giorgio Marincola by Carlo Costa and Lorenzo Teodonio in Razza partigiana and for his sister Isabella by Wu Ming 2 and Antar Mohamed in Timira. Romanzo meticcio. The events of their lives as well as many other aspects of our colonial neocolonial and postcolonial history have re-emerged from the darkness in which they had been hidden only in the last fifteen years thanks to the reopening of the archives allowing to re-discuss many of the aspects that in the pages of History as well as in those of literature had been told in another way. The two works that could be inserted into the current defined as the "new Italian epic" dismantle a series of clichés and prejudices and invite us to reflect on the concept of Italian identity on colonialism and its consequence in the short and long term and particularly on racism.Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature Comparate

Conoscere per deliberare. Tucidide II 40,2

2022

In the passage examined οἱ αὐτοί is defended by comparing it with Greek texts so far not considered in the critical debate, and especially in light of the non-elitist idea of democracy as it emerges in Pericles' Epitaphius.

Correlations between the Presence of Hurthle Cells and Cytomorphological Features of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy in Thyroid Nodules

2019

INTRODUCTION: The presence of Hürthle cells (HC) in fine needle thyroid biopsy (FNAB) is a real concern for a cytologist and also for an endocrinologist. We aimed to demonstrate if the presence of HC is associated with specific cytological features in FNAB results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 89 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodules, with FNAB; were two groups of patients: the study group A (HC+) (22 patients) with HC and control group B (HC-) (67 patients) with no HC; for both groups we analyzed the presence of 9 cytomorphologic features: overall cellularity, background colloid, lymphocyte infiltration, chronic inflammation, large nucleoli, small nucleoli, syn…

Radiofrequency ablation for thyroid nodules: which indications? The first Italian opinion statement

2015

Nodular thyroid disease is a very common finding in clinical practice, discovered by ultrasound (US) in about 50 % of the general population, with higher prevalence in women and in the elderly [1–4]. Whereas therapeutic flowchart is quite established and shared for malignant lesions, multiple options are now available for patients presenting with benign thyroid nodules, ranging from simple clinical and US follow-up to thyroid surgery. The majority of thyroid nodules, benign by fine-needle aspiration, are asymptomatic, stable, or slow-growing over time and require no treatment. Nevertheless, large thyroid nodules may become responsible for pressure symptoms, resulting in neck discomfort, cos…
