Understanding deep learning in land use classification based on Sentinel-2 time series

2020

AbstractThe use of deep learning (DL) approaches for the analysis of remote sensing (RS) data is rapidly increasing. DL techniques have provided excellent results in applications ranging from parameter estimation to image classification and anomaly detection. Although the vast majority of studies report precision indicators, there is a lack of studies dealing with the interpretability of the predictions. This shortcoming hampers a wider adoption of DL approaches by a wider users community, as model’s decisions are not accountable. In applications that involve the management of public budgets or policy compliance, a better interpretability of predictions is strictly required. This work aims …

Skeletal remains in archaeological strata are often assumed to be of similar ages. Here we show that combined Sr and O isotope analyses can serve as a powerful tool for assessing fish provenance and even for identifying fossil fish teeth in archaeological contexts. For this purpose, we established a reference Sr and O isotope dataset of extant fish teeth from major water bodies in the Southern Levant. Fossil shark teeth were identified within Iron Age cultural layers dating to 8–9th century BCE in the City of David, Jerusalem, although the reason for their presence remains unclear. Their enameloid 87Sr/86Sr and δ18OPO4 values [0.7075 ± 0.0001 (1 SD, n = 7) and 19.6 ± 0.9‰ (1 SD, n = 6), res…

Next-generation cophylogeny: unravelling eco-evolutionary processes

2021

A fundamental question in evolutionary biology is how microevolutionary processes translate into species diversification. Cophylogeny provides an appropriate framework to address this for symbiotic associations, but historically has been primarily limited to unveiling patterns. We argue that it is essential to integrate advances from ecology and evolutionary biology into cophylogeny, to gain greater mechanistic insights and transform cophylogeny into a platform to advance understanding of interspecific interactions and diversification more widely. We discuss key directions, such as incorporating trait reconstruction and considering multiple scales of network organization, and highlight rece…

The importance of thermal history: costs and benefits of heat exposure in a tropical, rocky shore oyster.

2015

Although thermal performance is widely recognized to be pivotal in determining species' distributions, assessment of this performance is often based on laboratory acclimated individuals, neglecting their proximate thermal history. The thermal history of a species sums the evolutionary history and, importantly, the thermal events recently experienced by individuals, including short-term acclimation to environmental variations. Thermal history is perhaps of greatest importance for species inhabiting thermally challenging environments and therefore assumed to be living close to their thermal limits, such as in the tropics. To test the importance of thermal history the responses of the tropical…

A conceptual framework for the integral management of marine protected areas

2009

A general conceptual framework for the management of marine protected areas (MPAs) was developed. The driver-pressure-state-impacts-response (DPSIR) framework was used to determine the elements affecting MPAs. The developed evaluation framework helped to select an appropriate suite of indicators to support an ecosystem approach, an assessment of the MPAs functioning and policy decisions. Gaps derived from the management and policy responses in the MPAs were also outlined. It was concluded that the DPSIR framework can help to simplify the complexity of MPA management. This document is a tool for policy makers, scientists and general public on the relevance of indicators to monitor changes an…

Image retrieval system for citizen services using penalized logistic regression models

2020

This paper describes a procedure to deal with large image collections obtained by smart city services based on interaction with citizens providing pictures. The semantic gap between the low-level image features and represented concepts and situations has been addressed using image retrieval techniques. A relevance feedback procedure is proposed for Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) based on the modelling of user responses. One of the novelties of the proposal is that the feedback learning procedure can use the information that citizens themselves can provide when using these services. The proposed algorithm considers the probability of an image belonging to the set of those sought by the …

Ethical relationship in the dentist-patient interaction

2021

Background In recent times the deontology of the dental profession has acquired special relevance as a result of problems that dentists have had to face to resolve ethical conflicts. Material and methods Information on deontology in the dental profession has been compiled in publications of health sciences in general and specific codes for dentistry, while expressing opinions about the experience of the authors themselves who, from a humanistic and health overview are concentrated in the dental area. Results This article presents our point of view of how the dentist-patient relationship should be in the face of current demands from patients and society, with a focus on the crucial role of e…

Quality Assessment of Reconstruction and Relighting from RTI Images: Application to Manufactured Surfaces

2019

In this paper, we propose to evaluate the quality of the reconstruction and relighting from images acquired by a Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) device. Three relighting models, namely the PTM, HSH and DMD, are evaluated using PSNR and SSIM. A visual assessment of how the reconstructed surfaces are perceived is also carried out through a sensory experiment. This study allows to estimate the relevance of these models to reproduce the appearance of the manufactured surfaces. It also shows that DMD reproduces the most accurate reconstruction/relighting to an acquired measurement and that a higher sampling density don't mean necessarily a higher perceptual quality.

Automatic mass spectra recognition for Ultra High Vacuum systems using multilabel classification

2021

Abstract In Ultra High-Vacuum (UHV) systems it is common to find a mixture of many gases originating from surface outgassing, leaks and permeation that contaminate vacuum chambers and cause issues to reach ultimate pressures. The identification of these contaminants is, in general, done manually by trained technicians from the analysis of mass spectra. This task is time consuming and can lead to misinterpretation or partial understanding of issues. The challenge resides in the rapid identification of these contaminants by using some automatic gas identification technique. This paper explores the automatic and simultaneous identification of 80 molecules, including some of the most commonly p…
