Institutional Dynamics in International Organizations: Lessons from the Recruitment Procedures of the European External Action Service

2014

Author's version of an article in the journal: Organization Studies. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0170840614544558 This article examines how organizational designs develop by proposing a novel theoretical framework that views organizational change as resulting from a dialectic process between interpretive agents. The key claim is that existing formal procedures (such as recruitment processes, our empirical focal point) are subject to involved actors’ interpretive efforts. This results in a bargaining situation based on the interpretations of the principal actors, which may induce a feedback loop whereby the original procedures are amended. The empirical re…

Towards a pragmatics of weblogs

2007

The weblog has emerged as one of the most dynamic means of Internet communication, in which users upload whatever piece of information they consider might arouse other users’ attention. Many articles and books have already addressed this new communicative phenomenon, but so far the weblog has not been addressed in purely cognitive-pragmatic terms. This article provides a first relevance-theoretic pragmatic analysis of the discourse of weblogs and their communicative qualities and limitations. El weblog ha surgido como una de las formas más dinámicas de comunicación, en la cual los usuarios de Internet “cuelgan” cualquier información que consideran que puede atraer la atención de otros usuar…

Technological Drivers and Sociocultural Change

2019

In this chapter, the suggestion is made that the relevance and timeliness of the concept of digital family is owing to certain advances in personal communication technologies that, together with wider social changes in the developed world, facilitate people’s participation in a digital society. First, we take a look at recent technological advancements in personal communication technology and social media applications, after which we examine more in-depth some of the major sociocultural transformations to have paved way for the emergence and rise of the digital family.

Long-distance trade and consumption of mollusks in the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods in the Negev Desert

2021

Abstract Recent archaeological excavations in the Negev desert in the southern Levant have yielded a variety of mollusk shells originating from the Mediterranean Sea, the Nile River, and the Red Sea, uncovered in the trash mounds and settlements of Byzantine and Early Islamic sites. These remains indicate that aquatic products were among the merchandised comestibles transported across long distances. Three shellfish taxa manifest such transportation: (1) the small clam, Donax trunculus, commonly found in the exposed sandy wash zones of the Eastern Mediterranean coast; (2) the large freshwater mussel, Chambardia rubens, whose habitat stretches from the Nile River to western Africa; and (3) t…

A survey on IVIVC/IVIVR development in the pharmaceutical industry – Past experience and current perspectives

2017

The present work aimed to describe the current status of IVIVC/IVIVR development in the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on the use and perception of specific approaches as well as successful and failed case studies. Two questionnaires have been distributed to 13 EFPIA partners of the Oral Biopharmaceutics Tools Initiative and to the Pharmacokinetics Working Party of the European Medicines Agency in order to capture the perspectives and experiences of industry scientists and agency members, respectively. Responses from ten companies and three European Agencies were received between May 21st 2014 and January 19th 2016. The majority of the companies acknowledged the importance of IVIVC/IVIVR…

Frontiers of metal-coordinating drug design

2020

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of metal ions in biomolecules is required to exert vital cellular functions. Metal-containing biomolecules can be modulated by small-molecule inhibitors targeting their metal-moiety. As well, the discovery of cisplatin ushered the rational discovery of metal-containing-drugs. The use of both drug types exploiting metal–ligand interactions is well established to treat distinct pathologies. Therefore, characterizing and leveraging metal-coordinating drugs is a pivotal, yet challenging, part of medicinal chemistry. AREA COVERED: Atomic-level simulations are increasingly employed to overcome the challenges met by traditional drug-discovery approaches and to compleme…

Sensación de inacabado y experiencias “not just right” como motivadoras de los síntomas obsesivo-compulsivos

2016

The sense of incompleteness, “not just right” experiences and “just right” symptoms are considered motivational variables of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. This study examines the relationships between these “new” constructs and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) related variables (symptoms, dysfunctional beliefs, perfectionism, and intolerance to uncertainty), in comparison to its association with emotional non-OCD psychopathology. The results from 267 individuals who completed self-reports indicate that individuals at risk of developing OCD score higher on the main constructs of the study than those not at risk. Only the variables incompleteness, not just right experiences and just right…

La formación del futuro docente a través de la interdisciplinariedad y la educación integral

2020

The Plastic Expression and the Musical Expression have a special relevance for the integral formation of the students of Early Childhood Education. Training in or from these areas of knowledge should be continued in the next stage, Primary Education, through the study of the so-called Area of Artistic Education (includes the subjects of Plastic and Music). The future teachers of Early Childhood Education should consider training in artistic education not only as an interrelated whole that guarantees the integral formation of the students of this educational stage, but as tools that favor and enhance the development of all fundamental areas (cognitive, motor, linguistics, etc.). This article…

Training for gender equity: an experience through choreographies in Early Childhood Education

2020
