Classroom Management and Loss of Time at the Lesson Start: A Preliminary Study
2013
<p style="text-align:justify">Lesson starts are transitional events which may cause management problems for teachers. In this study 131 lesson starts of equally many teachers were observed in primary and secondary schools in Finland. The results indicated that, in general, the problems were minimal. However, for various reasons lesson starts were delayed by an average of about six minutes. Calculated on this basis, the total loss of instructional time in the whole school year was about five weeks of schooling. No statistically significant relationships were observed between disturbances in the classroom and any background variable studied including grade level, classroom type,(special…
What happens at the lesson start?
2016
AbstractTransitional periods, such as lesson starts, are necessary steps from one activity to another, but they also compete with time for actual learning. The aim of the present study was to replicate a previous pilot study on lesson starts and explore possible disturbances. In total, 130 lesson starts in Finnish basic education in grades 1–9 were studied using systematic observation performed by 79 preservice teachers. The results corresponded with a previous pilot study indicating that lesson starts were generally orderly and teachers used effective means to manage events. However, lessons started 5 min late on average. Male teachers were evaluated to have better classroom order than fem…
Climate Classification and Division of China
1988
As far as a climate classification and division is concerned, China represents a great complexity and diversity due to the country’s vast territory and extremely complex landforms. In detail, three major climate-governing factors must be taken into consideration for the climate of China as such and for its division over space: (1) the geographical latitude, (2) the elevation above sea level and (3) the distance from the Pacific Ocean. Of particular importance for a climate regionalization of China is the country’s location on the southeastern corner of the Eurasian continent against the Pacific Ocean, which means that the nature of the surrounding regions varies from open oceans to compact …
FederatedCloudSim
2014
Recent developments show that the standardization of cloud service descriptions and exchange leads the way for the rise of cloud federations. In these federations CSPs (cloud service providers) can use resources of other CSPs in the case of a lack of local resources or they can add remote services to their catalogue. Cloud federations again demand for cloud brokers which offer the resources and services of different CSPs transparently to the users. Research of cloud federations in the real world is very complex and expensive as distributed hard- and software scenarios are needed. Therefore we present FederatedCloudSim, a very flexible cloud simulation framework that can be used to simulate …
Self-establishing a Service Level Agreement within Autonomic Cloud Networking Environment
2014
International audience; Today, cloud networking which is the ability to connect the user with his cloud services and to interconnect these services within an inter-cloud approach, is one of the recent research areas in the cloud computing research communities. The main drawback of cloud networking consists in the lack of Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee and management in conformance with a corresponding Service Level Agreement (SLA). Several research works have been proposed for the SLA establishing in cloud computing, but not in cloud networking. In this paper, we propose an architecture for self-establishing an end-to-end service level agreement between a Cloud Service User (CSU) and a …
Autonomic Brokerage Service for an End-to-End Cloud Networking Service Level Agreement

The main drawback of cloud networking consists in the lack of Quality of Service (QoS) assurance and management in conformance with a corresponding Service Level Agreement (SLA). In this paper, we propose a framework for self-establishing an end-to-end service level agreement between a Cloud Service User (CSU) and multiple Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) in a cloud networking environment using brokerage service. We focus on Qo…
MIS 5.5 highstand and future sea level flooding at 2100 and 2300 in tectonically stable areas of central mediterranean sea: Sardinia and the pontina …
2021
Areas of the Mediterranean Sea are dynamic habitats in which human activities have been conducted for centuries and which feature micro-tidal environments with about 0.40 m of range. For this reason, human settlements are still concentrated along a narrow coastline strip, where any change in the sea level and coastal dynamics may impact anthropic activities. We analyzed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and Copernicus Earth observation data. The aim of this research is to provide estimates and detailed maps (in three coastal plain of Sardinia (Italy) and in the Pontina Plain (southern Latium, Italy) of: (i) the past marine transgression occurred during MIS 5.5 highstand 119 kyrss BP
Relative sea-level rise and potential submersion risk for 2100 on 16 coastal plains of the mediterranean sea
2020
The coasts of the Mediterranean Sea are dynamic habitats in which human activities have been conducted for centuries and which feature micro-tidal environments with about 0.40 m of range. For this reason, human settlements are still concentrated along a narrow coastline strip, where any change in the sea level and coastal dynamics may impact anthropic activities. In the frame of the RITMARE and the Copernicus Projects, we analyzed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and Copernicus Earth Observation data to provide estimates of potential marine submersion for 2100 for 16 small-sized coastal plains located in the Italian peninsula and four Mediterranean countries (France, Spain, Tunisia, Cypr…
Millstone coastal quarries of the Mediterranean: A new class of sea level indicator
2014
The coasts of Italy still preserve several remnants of coastal quarries built in antiquity, that now provide insights into the intervening sea-level changes occurred during the last millennia. In this paper, we show and discuss a new class of sea level indicator consisting of millstones carved along the rocky coast of southern Italy since 2500 BP, that are currently submerged. They were extracted from beachrocks, sandstones or similar sedimentary rocks, easier for carving by ancient carving tools. Our study focuses on 10 coastal sites located at Capo d'Orlando, Avola, and Letojanni, in Sicily; Soverato, Tropea, and Capo dell'Armi, in Calabria; Castellabate, Palinuro, and Scario, in Campania…
Employees’ Acceptance and Involvement in Accordance with Codes of Conduct – Chinese Business Behaviour vs. Western Compliance Management Systems
2015
Abstract More stringent anti-corruption and anti-bribery laws in the US, Europe and PR China as well as the current political anti-corruption-campaign in China force Western globally active companies to implement Code of Conducts at their subsidiaries worldwide – thus also in China. There are mixed results of existing academic research on the impact of Codes of Conduct regarding ethical behaviour of the employees in connection with these Codes. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the motivation and intention of employees to accept and act according to a local Code of Conduct. This research is conducted in a cross-cultural setting (PR China, Germany, Austria) by ta…
