NMR T1-Relaxation Measurements on Paramagnetic Organolanthanides: An Alternative Tool for Structure Determination in Solution

2005

1H NMR investigations were conducted on four paramagnetic organolanthanides, all bearing the tetraisopropylcyclopentadienyl ligand Cp4i (HC5iPr4) in order to verify whether or not interactions observed in the solid state are maintained in solution. In some cases variable-temperature experiments were necessary to enhance the resolution and determine the best conditions for the study. The 1D NMR spectrum could be interpreted in every case. Complementary 2D COSY experiments allowed the full attribution of the signals. T1 (1H) relaxation values were determined for all the paramagnetic complexes at the most suitable temperature, and compared with those of the diamagnetic KCp4i. The same tendency…

An Entry to Mixed NHC-Fischer Carbene Complexes and Zwitterionic Group 6 Metal Alkenyls

2016

The addition of NHCs to α,β-unsaturated Cr(0) and W(0) (Fischer) carbene complexes is strongly dependent on the electrophilicity of the carbene carbon. Electrophilic alkoxy-carbene complexes quantitatively react with NHCs to yield stable zwitterionic (racemic) Cr(0) - and W(0) -alkenyls with total regio- and E-stereoselectivity. Less electrophilic aminocarbenes react with NHCs to promote the displacement of a CO ligand and yield "mixed" NHC/Fischer biscarbenes in a process that is unprecedented in group 6 metal-carbene chemistry. In fact, the compounds prepared, are some of the scarce examples of Fischer bisylidenes reported in the literature. The electrochemistry of the zwitterionic Cr(0) …

Advances in photochemical and electrochemical incorporation of sulfur dioxide for the synthesis of value-added compounds.

2021

Organic photochemistry and electrochemistry currently receive tremendous attention in organic synthesis as both techniques enable the reagent-less activation of organic molecules without using expensive and hazardous redox reagents. The incorporation of SO2 into organic molecules is a relatively modern research topic, which likewise gains immense popularity since the discovery of the SO2 surrogate DABSO. Sulfur-containing organic molecules are omnipresent in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. This review covers the recent progress in electrochemical and photochemical methodologies for the incorporation and uses of SO2 in the synthesis of value-added compounds. Additionally, different work t…

Structure effects induced by high mechanical compaction of STAM-17-OEt MOF powders

2021

Financial support by PJ-RIC-FFABR_2017 and the EPSRC grant EPSRC industrial CASE award (grant EP/N50936X/1) are acknowledged. The research programme Nanoporous materials (P1-0021) financially supported by Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS) is acknowledged as well. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for many potential applications, spacing from gas storage to catalysis. However, the powder form of which they are generally made is not suitable, mainly because of the low packing density. Powder compaction is therefore necessary, but also challenging because of their typical mechanical fragility. Indeed, generally, they undergo irreversibly damages upon densification processe…

Exploring the Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization in CoIII -Decorated {DyIII 2 } Units

2016

We have prepared and structurally characterized a new member of the butterfly-like {CoIII 2DyIII 2} single-molecule magnets (SMMs) through further CoIIIdecoration, with the formula [CoIII 4DyIII 2(OH)2(teaH)2(tea)2(Piv)6] (teaH3=triethanolamine; Piv=trimethylacetate or pivalate). Direct current (DC) susceptibility and magnetization measurements were performed allowing the extraction of possible crystal-field parameters. A simple electrostatic modeling shows reasonable agreement with experimental data. Alternating current (AC) susceptibility measurements under a zero DC field and under small applied fields were performed at different frequencies (i.e., 10–1500 Hz) and at low temperatures (i.…

A rare polymeric azido-bridged copper(II) chain with a pentameric repeating unit: Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

2013

International audience; The novel polymeric chain copper(II) complex [Cu4(μ-Mesalpn)2(μ1,1,1-N3)2(μ1,1-N3)2Cu]n (1) was prepared by the reaction of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O with Mesalpn in the presence of an excess of NaN3. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study showed an unusual 1D polymeric chain based on pentanuclear Cu5 units with both μ1,1,1-N3 and μ1,1-N3 bridges, and with three independent Cu(II) ions presenting three different coordination numbers (4, 5 and 6). The magnetic susceptibility data show the presence of dominant anti-ferromagnetic interactions.

Oxoanion binding to a cyclic pseudopeptide containing 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole moieties

2016

A macrocyclic pseudopeptide 3 is described featuring three amide groups and three 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole units along the ring. This pseudopeptide was designed such that the amide NH groups and the triazole CH groups converge toward the cavity, thus creating an environment well suited for anion recognition. Conformational studies in solution combined with X-ray crystallography confirmed this preorganisation. Solubility of 3 restricted binding studies to organic media such as 5 vol% DMSO/acetone or DMSO/water mixtures with a water content up to 5 vol%. These binding studies demonstrated that 3 binds to a variety of inorganic anions in DMSO/acetone including chloride, nitrate, sulfat…

From self-inclusion and host-guest complexes to channel structures

2012

Various supramolecular interactions are applied as driving forces in self-assembly and molecular recognition processes. Single crystal X-ray diffraction method is especially important for solid-state studies of non-covalent interactions as it reveals their influence on the molecular and supramolecular structures. This paper discusses structures of two completely different types of compounds in which a variety of intermolecular interactions are involved. It will be shown that strong and weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds in N-alkylammonium resorcinarene salts, depending on the type of anion, inclusion of resorcinarene upper rim pendant group or solvent molecules into the cavity, strongly aff…

Halogen bonds in 2,5-dihalopyridine-copper(II) chloride complexes

2018

Ten coordination complexes obtained through a facile reaction between 2,5-dihalopyridines and copper(II) chloride (CuCl2) are characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Two series of dihalopyridine complexes based on 2-chloro-5-X-pyridine and 2-bromo-5-X-pyridine (X = F, Cl, Br and I) were prepared to analyze the C–X2/X5⋯Cl–Cu halogen bonds (XB). The influence of X2- and X5-substituents on the respective interactions was examined by comparing them to the X2/X3⋯Cl–Cu XBs found in mono-substituted halopyridine complexes, (n-X-pyridine)2·CuCl2 (n = 2, 3 and X = Cl, Br and I). Varying the X5-halogens in (2,5-dihalopyridine)2·CuCl2, the C5–X5⋯Cl–Cu XBs follow the order F5 1 and they c…

Self-assembled Pt2L2 boxes strongly bind G-quadruplex DNA and influence gene expression in cancer cells

2017

Supramolecular Pt(ii) quadrangular boxes bind native and G-quadruplex DNA motifs in a size-dependent fashion. Three Pt molecular squares of distinct size show biological activity against cancer cells and heavily influence the expression of genes known to form G-quadruplexes in their promoter regions. The smallest Pt-box displays less activity but more selectivity for a quadruplex formed in the c-Kit gene.
