How do individuals emotionally cope with the imminent real-world salience of mortality? DeWall and Baumeister as well as Kashdan and colleagues previously provided support that an increased use of positive emotion words serves as a way to protect and defend against mortality salience of one’s own contemplated death. Although these studies provide important insights into the psychological dynamics of mortality salience, it remains an open question how individuals cope with the immense threat of mortality prior to their imminent actual death. In the present research, we therefore analyzed positivity in the final words spoken immediately before execution by 407 death row inmates in Texas. By u…

Aggression in television programs in Finland

1993

A detailed coding system was constructed to study the frequency and salience of aggression in TV programs broadcast on Finnish television. Salience of aggression was measured by the brutality index which consisted of ratings concerning the 1) program context, 2) seriousness, 3) justification, and 4) dramatization of aggressive acts. When compared to previous studies of TV-violence, the rate of aggression in Finnish TV was moderate with 3.5 aggressive acts per program hour. Only 14% of aggressive acts portrayed brutal aggression, which was mostly seen in fictional films and serials. A clear 9 pm watershed was not seen in Finland, since aggressive acts were distributed quite evenly during the…

Vote choices of left-authoritarians: Misperceived congruence and issue salience

2021

Abstract Often lacking parties with a corresponding profile, citizens with economically left and culturally authoritarian, or nationalist, policy orientations face a trade-off between congruence on economic and on cultural issues. How such left-authoritarian voters resolve this trade-off depends on which issues are more salient to them, previous research argues. We extend this line of research by considering the role of (mis-)perceived party positions. Using a survey in the context of the 2017 German election, we show how perceived congruence and issue importance interactively shape the left-authoritarian vote. Our findings indicate that many left-authoritarians vote for a party simply beca…

Understanding eParticipation services in indonesian local government

2014

Published version of a chapter in the book: Information and Communication Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-55032-4_32 This study aims at understanding how local government from a developing country, in this case Indonesia, implement and manage eParticipation services. In doing so, we combine institutional theory and stakeholder theory to build a sharper analytical lens. From an interpretive case study in the city of Yogyakarta, we reveal the institutionalization process of the services since their inception and identify major stakeholders and their salience. Based on our findings, we propose implications for practice and suggest implicati…

How the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and their voters veered to the radical right, 2013–2017

2019

Abstract Until 2017, Germany was an exception to the success of radical right parties in postwar Europe. We provide new evidence for the transformation of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to a radical right party drawing upon social media data. Further, we demonstrate that the AfD's electorate now matches the radical right template of other countries and that its trajectory mirrors the ideological shift of the party. Using data from the 2013 to 2017 series of German Longitudinal Elections Study (GLES) tracking polls, we employ multilevel modelling to test our argument on support for the AfD. We find the AfD's support now resembles the image of European radical right voters. Specifically, g…

Fully automatic saliency-based subjects extraction in digital images

2013

In this paper we present a novel saliency-based technique for the automatic extraction of relevant subjects in digital images. We use enhanced saliency maps to determine the most relevant parts of the images and an image cropping technique on the map itself to extract one or more relevant subjects. The contribution of the paper is two-fold as we propose a technique to enhance the standard GBVS saliency map and a technique to extract the most salient parts of the image. The GBVS saliency map is enhanced by applying three filters particularly designed to optimize the performance for the task of relevant subjects extraction. The extraction of relevant subjects is demonstrated on a manually ann…

Primitives detection by a discrete and non linear approach : application to the detection and caracterization of interest points for 3D meshes

2010

This manuscript is dedicated to the detection and caracterization of interest points for 3D meshes. First of all, we show the limitations of the curvature measure on sharp edges, the measure usually used for the analysis of meshes. Then, we present a generalization of the SUSAN operator for meshes, named SUSAN-3D. The saliency measure proposed quantify the local variation of the surface and classify directly the analysed vertices in five classes: salient, crest, flat, valley and cavity. The meshes under consideration are manifolds and can be closed or non-closed, regulars or irregulars, dense or not and noised or not. The accuracy of the SUSAN-3D operator is compared to two curvature operat…

Drought-related cholera outbreaks in Africa and the implications for climate change: a narrative review.

2021

ABSTRACT Africa has historically seen several periods of prolonged and extreme droughts across the continent, causing food insecurity, exacerbating social inequity and frequent mortality. A known consequence of droughts and their associated risk factors are infectious disease outbreaks, which are worsened by malnutrition, poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene and population displacement. Cholera is a potential causative agent of such outbreaks. Africa has the highest global cholera burden, several drought-prone regions and high levels of inequity. Despite this, research on cholera and drought in Africa is lacking. Here, we review available research on drought-related cholera outbreak…
