A Harris-based Region Detector on a Computational Grid

2007

This paper introduces a new Harris-based feature detector algorithm, characterized by no parameters tuning to detect region of interest. Preliminary results show that the proposed methodology returns good results with respect to standard detectors which need a set of parameters. An uncommon parallel implementation of the proposed algorithm is presented to support the high computational workload which is required to avoid the approximation of the results. Our parallel approach differs from the conventional one because an internal scheduler, based on the expected running time, is used to balance the data distribution on a client-server model. The aim of this paper is also to underline the adv…

Graph Comparison and Artificial Models for Simulating Real Criminal Networks

2021

Network Science is an active research field, with numerous applications in areas like computer science, economics, or sociology. Criminal networks, in particular, possess specific topologies which allow them to exhibit strong resilience to disruption. Starting from a dataset related to meetings between members of a Mafia organization which operated in Sicily during 2000s, we here aim to create artificial models with similar properties. To this end, we use specific tools of Social Network Analysis, including network models (Barabási-Albert identified to be the most promising) and metrics which allow us to quantify the similarity between two networks. To the best of our knowledge, the DeltaCo…

Passive components for reducing environmental impacts of buildings:analysis of an experimental green roof

2020

The reduction of the environmental impacts related to the building sector is a matter of outmost importance concerning the sustainable utilization of resources related to human activities. Such sector is in fact responsible for about 40% of both release of pollutants in the atmosphere and energy consumption. When trying to reduce buildings’ environmental impacts, as well as to limit their energy consumption, building envelope passive systems can be used. Amongst these, green roofs have been gaining global attention due to their benefits in terms of resilience and sustainability, in order to mitigate the unfavourable urbanization effects. Research on the green roof has been indeed increasing…

Predictions in Resilient Hybrid AC/DC Grids Leveraged by an Interoperable and Secure ICT Platform

2022

Power systems are undergoing a significant change and the main elements to address the new challenges is the new key-role played by the distribution grid and its transformation into a smart grid. While the distribution grid has traditionally operated with alternating current (AC), nowadays most devices operate with DC internally, and most distributed renewable resources generate power in DC. Furthermore, storage components, such as batteries and supercapacitors, have a DC character. DC seems to be the one of the most promising candidates to avoid stranded investments and to guarantee incredible saving for the community in Europe, making the transition to a fully decarbonised energy system a…

Browser independent content based image resizing for liquid web layouts

2010

A typical problem for webdesigners is to realize pages that can be potentially accessed from a number of display devices with different screen sizes and resolutions. Liquid layouts can help for this purpose. However, they can not typically be applied to images, which need to be rescaled or deformed. In both cases usability could be deteriorated. Content-aware image resizing techniques can help for this goal by rescaling the images to the desired width while preserving important image structures. This paper presents a content-aware resizing technique which can be seamlessly integrated into web pages without any effort from the user. The results from the system application prove its effective…

Automatic aesthetic photo composition

2013

A proper aesthetic composition of photographic content does result in an actual emotional response from the watcher. In this work we propose a fully automatic computational approach to photo composi- tion. This method takes into account well-known and widely adopted aesthetic guidelines relative to picture content as a mean for guiding an optimization framework. The resulting composition is produced as the optimal combination of cropping and retargeting. The effectiveness of the results achieved by the method are tested and evaluated with several of experiments.

Physical Metaphor for Streaming Media Retargeting

2014

We here introduce an image/video retargeting method that operates arbitrary aspect ratios resizing achieved in real-time performances. Most of the literature retargeting approaches sacrifice real-time performances in behalf of quality. On the other hand, existing fast methods provide arguable results. We can obtain a valuable trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency. The method named Spring Simulation Retargeting (SSR) is mainly based on a physical springs-based simulation. The media are assumed as flexible objects composed of particles and springs with different local stiffness properties, related to the visual importance of the content. The variation of the object size generates ela…

Exploiting Visual Saliency Algorithms for Object-Based Attention: A New Color and Scale-Based Approach

2017

Visual Saliency aims to detect the most important regions of an image from a perceptual point of view. More in detail, the goal of Visual Saliency is to build a Saliency Map revealing the salient subset of a given image by analyzing bottom-up and top-down factors of Visual Attention. In this paper we proposed a new method for Saliency detection based on colour and scale analysis, extending our previous work based on SIFT spatial density inspection. We conducted several experiments to study the relationships between saliency methods and the object attention processes and we collected experimental data by tracking the eye movements of thirty viewers in the first three seconds of observation o…

Why you trust in visual saliency

2015

Image understanding is a simple task for a human observer. Visual attention is automatically pointed to interesting regions by a natural objective stimulus in a first step and by prior knowledge in a second step. Saliency maps try to simulate human response and use actual eye-movements measurements as ground truth. An interesting question is: how much corruption in a digital image can affect saliency detection respect to the original image? One of the contributions of this work is to compare the performances of standard approaches with respect to different type of image corruptions and different threshold values on saliency maps. If the corruption can be estimated and/or the threshold is fi…

Monte-Carlo image retargeting

2014

In this paper an efficient method for image retargeting is proposed. It relies on a monte-carlo model that makes use of image saliency. Each random sample is extracted from deformation probability mass function defined properly, and shrinks or enlarges the image by a fixed size. The shape of the function, determining which regions of the image are affected by the deformations, depends on the image saliency. High informative regions are less likely to be chosen, while low saliency regions are more probable. Such a model does not require any optimization, since its solution is obtained by extracting repeatedly random samples, and allows real-time application even for large images. Computation…
