Effects of exercise and diet interventions on obesity-related sleep disorders in men: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.
2013
Abstract Background Sleep is essential for normal and healthy living. Lack of good quality sleep affects physical, mental and emotional functions. Currently, the treatments of obesity-related sleep disorders focus more on suppressing sleep-related symptoms pharmaceutically and are often accompanied by side effects. Thus, there is urgent need for alternative ways to combat chronic sleep disorders. This study will investigate underlying mechanisms of the effects of exercise and diet intervention on obesity-related sleep disorders, the role of gut microbiota in relation to poor quality of sleep and day-time sleepiness, as well as the levels of hormones responsible for sleep-wake cycle regulati…
Acute HIT session induced changes and recovery in muscle activation level, voluntary force production and jump performance during 8 weeks of HIT trai…
2017
High-intensity interval training (HIT) has gained wide popularity among competitive athletes and sport enthusiasts in the recent decades. While an extensive amount of research has been done on acute neuromuscular (NM) response and recovery after low-moderate intensity endurance training, the data regarding HIT in recreational athletes remains to be limited. In order to reduce that gap, the present study investigated the acute HIT session induced changes and recovery in muscle activation level, voluntary force production and counter movement jump performance during 8 weeks of HIT training in recreationally endurance trained men. A total of 9 subjects age 30.7 years (± 5.8), participated in t…
Painonhallintaryhmäläisten kokemuksia elintapamuutosten vaikeuksista ja niistä selviytymisestä : "Ole itsellesi armollinen. Mulle se oli just se koko…
2015
Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena. Aineistonkeruumenetelmänä oli avoin teemahaastattelu ja analyysimenetelmänä sisällönanalyysi. Haastattelut tehtiin joulukuussa 2013 Turun terveysasemalla. Tutkimukseen osallistui kahdeksan henkilöä, jotka olivat osallistuneet P…
Heart and Skeletal Muscles: Linked by Autonomic Nervous System.
2019
Background Resting sympathetic hyperactivity and impaired parasympathetic reactivation after exercise have been described in patients with heart failure (HF). However, the association of these autonomic changes in patients with HF and sarcopenia is unknown. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of autonomic modulation on sarcopenia in male patients with HF. Methods We enrolled 116 male patients with HF and left ventricular ejection fraction < 40%. All patients underwent a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Maximal heart rate was recorded and delta heart rate recovery (∆HRR) was assessed at 1st and 2nd minutes after exercise. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSN…
Neuromuscular and hormonal adaptations to resistance training : special effects of time of day of training
2009
The majority of the processes in human physiology and behaviour exhibit daily variation. Neuromuscular performance has been repeatedly shown to be lower in the morning hours compared to the rest of the day. However, the scientific data available provide somewhat conflicting results on the origin and mechanisms of diurnal variation in maximum strength and power. In addition, very limited scientific evidence exists as to whether this diurnal variation can be diminished by time-of-day-specific resistance training. The present study was designed to obtain more information on the mechanisms behind both diurnal variation in muscle strength and power, and the mechanisms behind adaptations to time-o…
Lihas…
Conditioning hops increase triceps surae muscle force and Achilles tendon strain energy in the stretch-shortening cycle
2018
Postactivation potentiation can improve athletic performance, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of conditioning hops on triceps surae muscle force and tendon strain and its contribution to potentiated stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) performance. Thirty-two subjects participated in two experiments. In both experiments, subjects performed three drop jumps (DJs) after prior conditioning with 10 maximal hops, three unconditioned DJs served as control. Ground reaction forces, kinematics, and triceps surae electromyographic activity were recorded. Ultrasound imaging was used to determine fascicle lengths (FASC) of the gastrocnemius (GM) and sol…
Estrogen Regulates the Satellite Cell Compartment in Females
2019
SUMMARY Skeletal muscle mass, strength, and regenerative capacity decline with age, with many measures showing a greater deterioration in females around the time estrogen levels decrease at menopause. Here, we show that estrogen deficiency severely compromises the maintenance of muscle stem cells (i.e., satellite cells) as well as impairs self-renewal and differentiation into muscle fibers. Mechanistically, by hormone replacement, use of a selective estrogen-receptor modulator (bazedoxifene), and conditional estrogen receptor knockout, we implicate 17β-estradiol and satellite cell expression of estrogen receptor α and show that estrogen signaling through this receptor is necessary to preven…
Does higher education protect against obesity? Evidence using Mendelian randomization
2017
Objectives. The aim of this explorative study was to examine the effect of education on obesity using Mendelian randomization. Methods. Participants (N = 2011) were from the on- going nationally representative Young Finns Study (YFS) that began in 1980 when six cohorts (aged 30, 33, 36, 39, 42 and 45 in 2007) were recruited. The average value of BMI (kg/m(2)) measurements in 2007 and 2011 and genetic information were linked to comprehensive register based information on the years of education in 2007. We first used a linear regression (Ordinary Least Squares, OLS) to estimate the relationship between education and BMI. To identify a causal relationship, we exploited Mendelian randomization …
