The effect of obesity combined with low muscle strengthon decline in mobility in older persons - Results from the InCHIANTI Study

2009

Objective: Both obesity and muscle impairment are increasingly prevalent among older persons and negatively affect health and physical functioning. However, the combined effect of coexisting obesity and muscle impairment on physical function decline has been little studied. We examined whether obese persons with low muscle strength experience significantly greater declines in walking speed and mobility than persons with only obesity or low muscle strength. Design: Community-dwelling adults aged ⩾65 years (n=930) living in the Chianti geographic area (Tuscany, Italy) were followed for 6 years in the population-based InCHIANTI study. Measurements: On the basis of baseline measurements (1998–2…

Fatness and Consequences of Neoliberalism

2021

My aim in this chapter is to inspect how neoliberal economic policy and rationale are enmeshed with conceptions of body, gender and health in the contemporary (primarily Western) cultural sphere and how they have been addressed in research literature, particularly concerning fatness and the fat body. In recent years, the fat body has been and is a target of intensifying biopolitical control. My point of departure is that different elements of neoliberal culture have found something to latch onto and exploit in the concept of the fat body. Social institutions such as health care policies; or structures, such as health care systems; not to mention social, moral, and political orders of the da…

Obesity as a predictor of falls among older women

2012

In older people’s falls often lead to hospitalisation and lengthy recovery in health care institutions and this may be conducive to financial strain on health care systems. The propensity or risk of falling rises as the individual gets older and frailer. Fear of falling, previous history of falling, poor mobility, limitations in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), side effects of medications, hazardous environment, poor vision and hearing, poor postural balance and gaits impairment are among the frequent factors that give rise to falls amongst older people. However, studies focused on obesity as a risk factor for falls are rarer. The aim of this study was to find out whether obesity increases…

Does Use of Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) in Men with Prostate Cancer Increase the Risk of Sarcopenia?

2019

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (PCa) can compromise muscle health. Hence, we aimed to quantify the prevalence of sarcopenia (i.e., compromised lean mass, muscle strength, and physical function) in ADT-treated (> 12 week) men (n = 70) compared to similarly aged non-ADT-treated PCa (n = 52) and healthy controls (n = 70). Lean and fat mass were quantified by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Muscle strength and function were measured using handgrip dynamometry and gait speed, respectively. Sarcopenia was defined as low adjusted appendicular lean mass [ALM; height-adjusted (ALMI), body mass index-adjusted (ALMBMI) and height and fat mass-adjusted (ALMHFM)] with weak hand…

Vyötärölihavuus, kohonnut paastoglukoosi, tyyppi 2 diabetes ja metabolinen oireyhtymä entisillä huippu-urheilijoilla

2010

Tutkimus on osa laajempaa projektikokonaisuutta, jonka yleisenä tavoitteena on kartoittaa entisten huippu-urheilijoiden terveyttä. Tutkittavat kutsuttiin kirjeitse TERVEYSTUTKIMUS 2008 terveystarkastukseen. Tutkimus to…

Brief interventions in counselling for nutrition and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in primary care adult patients

2018

This research i) examined the influence of a brief nutrition-based intervention among primary care patients in changing nutrition and clinical values related to metabolic syndrome (study 1), and ii) assessed nutrition and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its clinical determinants among primary care patients in different sociodemographic groups (study 2). In study 1, a systematic literature review was conducted on eight databases during Sept.-Oct. 2016 with a final update in Nov. 2017. In study 2, data (n=557 for RO II-III, n=251 for RO IV-V) collected in primary care practices in Central Finland in 2006-2008 for the EVI study were analysed using Chi-Square test, GLM and Logistic Reg…
