Exploring the unknowns : State of the art in qualitative forest-based sector foresight research
2022
The forest-based sector is facing one the greatest transitions in its history in the face of global megatrends. Globalization, sustainability challenges and the ICT sector have put the world in a new light. Whereas some of the recent developments have resulted in challenges for the traditional forest industry, many positive expectations and opportunities are also seen to arise in the form of the transition to a sustainable bio-economy. However, to be able to fully seize the opportunity, the industry has to navigate through contingency where preparedness can have a major impact. Foresight as a strategic approach can help to prepare and sensitize decision-makers to be prepared for the future.…
Amidst Uncertainty–or Not? : Decision-Making in Early-Stage Software Startups
2019
It is commonly claimed that the initial stages of any startup business are dominated by continuous, extended uncertainty, in an environment that has even been described as chaotic. Consequently, decisions are made in uncertain circumstances, so making the right decision is crucial to successful business. However, little currently exists in the way of empirical studies into this supposed uncertainty. In this paper, we study decision-making in early-stage software startups by means of a single, in-depth case study. Based on our data, we argue that software startups do not work in a chaotic environment, nor are they characterized by unique uncertainty unlike that experienced by other firms. pe…

Business continuity of business models : Evaluating the resilience of business models for contingencies
2019
Company business models are vulnerable to various contingencies in the business environment that may unexpectedly render their business logic ineffective. In particular, technological advancements, such as the Internet of things, big data, sharing economy and crowdsourcing, have enabled new forms of business models that can effectively and abruptly make traditional business models obsolete. By disrupting or even diminishing companies’ revenue streams, environmental contingencies may present a significant threat to business continuity (BC). Evaluating the resilience of business models against these contingencies should therefore be a core area of BC. However, existing BC approaches tend to f…

Strategies in transition : the internationalization of Finnish forest industry companies
2003
The aim of the dissertation is to advance our knowledge and understanding related to the internationalization processes of the Finnish forest industry companies by answering the following questions in which, it is considered, the internationalization of business activities plays an important role: how has it been possible for a group of once small companies operating from a small and remote country to rise into such prominent positions within the forest industry internationally? And: by which means have the remaining companies come to be what they are today? The thesis consists of three parts: 1) an introductory essay, laying down the frame of reference of the study, 2) three articles, each…
Exploring the immersive journalism landscape
2021
Current drivers of 360-degree journalism have been mostly curious about the new medium, its possibilities, and are exploring business opportunities. The early adoption of such technology is often a matter of brand-building – that is, news organizations experimenting with virtual reality (VR) want to demonstrate that their digital strategies are forward-thinking (Watson 2017). After interviewing representatives from leading US newspapers, Bosworth and Sarah (2019, 226) also conclude, “among major media companies that failing to experiment in immersive and experimental stories will mean losing a race”. peerReviewed

Uusien liiketoimintamahdollisuuksien havainnointi ohjelmistoalalla
2012
Teknologiayritysten liiketoimintaympäristö elää jatkuvassa muutoksessa - uudet teknologiset innovaatiot ja yhteiskunnalliset mullistukset haastavat jatkuvasti vanhoja liiketoimintamalleja. Yrittäjät ovatkin jatkuvasti toisaalta paineiden alla, toisaalta taas keskellä maailmaa täynnä mahdollisuuksia. Muutamien visionäärien ja innovatiivisten yksilöiden työ on luonut suuria menestystarinoita, jotka parhaimmillaan tuottavat koko ihmiskuntaa hyödyttäviä innovaatioita. Epäoptimaalisemmassakin tapauksessa ne usein tekevät ainakin muutaman yksilön rikkaaksi ja täyttävät markkinoiden tarpeita elintasoa nostavalla tavalla. Olemassa olevan tutkimuksen perusteella ei voida yksiselitteisesti määrittää …
How customer knowledge affects exploration : generating, guiding, and gatekeeping
2021
The importance of understanding customers in order to sustain the long-term success of the company has been claimed by academics and practitioners for decades, to the point that the claim has turned into a truism. And still, the role of customer knowledge in organizational renewal, especially via explorative new product development (NPD), remains ambiguous. While existing literature generally emphasizes the value of customer knowledge, critics argue that a strong customer focus can also de-motivate and misguide exploration. This study adds clarity to our understanding of this tension by drawing from an intensive analysis of the corporate archives of a rapidly growing high-tech company. The …
