The cardinal exercise stopper: Muscle fatigue, muscle pain or perception of effort?

2018

The capacity to sustain high-intensity aerobic exercise is essential for endurance performance. Therefore, it is important to understand what is the factor limiting time to exhaustion (TTE) in healthy and fit adults. In Study 1, maximal voluntary cycling power (MVCP) was measured in 11 volunteers before and immediately after a high-intensity TTE test on cycle ergometer. Cadence was 60 rpm in both the MVCP and TTE tests. Despite a 35% loss in MVCP, power produced during the final MVCP test (mean ± SD 469 ± 111 W) was significantly higher than the power required by the TTE test (269 ± 55 W) (P < 0.001). In Study 2, 12 participants performed a cold pressor test (CPT) to the limit of tolerance …

Normal Values of Oxygen Concentration in Human Blood

1984

Under physiological conditions, the oxygen supply as the product of O2-concentration (mlO2/dl; %(v/v)) and perfusion is influenced by many factors (cf. Fig. 1): perfusion on one hand, oxygen partial pressure (pO2; mmHg), haemoglobin (Hb) concentration (g/dl) and O2 binding power of Hb on the other hand. Under pathological conditions, oxygen supply disturbances are related to hypoxemia, i.e. reduction of O2-concentration in the blood. The differential diagnosis of hypoxemia includes normoxic, hypoxic and circulatoric disturbances of oxygen supply (cf. Fig. 1). Thus it is necessary to describe a NORMOXIC HYPOXEMIA (anemic or toxemic), a HYPOXIC HYPOXEMIA (decreased O2-concentration caused by …

Factors Correlating with Restenosis after PTCA

1991

Since its introduction in 1977 [7, 8], PTCA has been widely used in patients with coronary artery disease. Restenosis with recurrence of angina remains the major problem, limiting the long-term success after PTCA. Reported restenosis rates vary from 17% to 47% [9–19, 22–26]. In larger series [12, 15, 26] a restenosis rate of about 30% was constantly found, irrespective of the definition of restenosis in use.

Secondary Vitrectomy with Internal Limiting Membrane Plug due to Persistent Full-Thickness Macular Hole OCT-Angiography and Microperimetry Features: …

2020

Purpose. To study the features in OCT-angiography and microperimetry in eyes with persistent full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) closed with the secondary plana vitrectomy (PPV) with autologous internal limiting membrane (ILM) plug. Methods. Secondary PPV was performed with closing the persistent FTMH with ILM plug, C3F8 tamponade, and face-down positioning. Four patients were followed for 6 months with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measurement, SD-OCT and OCT-A, and microperimetry. The results were compared with the fellow eye; in two patients, it was the healthy eye, and in two remaining eyes, successfully closed FTMH after primary PPV. Results. ILM flap was integrated in all cases w…

Identification of Flow-Limiting Coronary Stenosis With PCS: A New Cost-Effective Index Derived From the Product of Corrected TIMI Frame Count and Per…

2021

Background: Identifying functional coronary stenosis with simple and cost-effective methods during invasive coronary angiography is still challenging. Corrected TIMI frame count (CTFC) is considered to be the frame count velocity of coronary blood flow. We aimed to propose a simple and cost-effective index based on CTFC and percent diameter stenosis (DS) to identify flow-limiting coronary stenosis. For this, a new index was put forward as the product of CTFC and DS (PCS). PCS can be regarded as the loss of coronary blood flow due to diameter stenosis. Methods: DS, CTFC, PCS, and Fractional flow reserve (FFR) of 111 vessels in 84 patients with suspected coronary heart disease were measured. F…

Unusual oxygen binding behavior of a 24-meric crustacean hemocyanin.

2009

Abstract Hemocyanins from Crustacea usually are found as 1 × 6 or 2 × 6-meric assemblies. An exception is the hemocyanin isolated from thalassinidean shrimps where the main component is a 24-meric structure. Our analysis of oxygen binding data of the thalassinidean shrimp Upogebia pusilla based on a three-state MWC-model revealed that despite the 24-meric structure the functional properties can be described very well based on the hexamer as allosteric unit. In contrast to the hemocyanins from other thalassinidean shrimps the oxygen affinity of hemocyanin from U. pusilla is increased upon addition of l -lactate. A particular feature of this hemocyanin seems to be that l -lactate already enha…

Limiting Carleman weights and conformally transversally anisotropic manifolds

2020

We analyze the structure of the set of limiting Carleman weights in all conformally flat manifolds, 3 3 -manifolds, and 4 4 -manifolds. In particular we give a new proof of the classification of Euclidean limiting Carleman weights, and show that there are only three basic such weights up to the action of the conformal group. In dimension three we show that if the manifold is not conformally flat, there could be one or two limiting Carleman weights. We also characterize the metrics that have more than one limiting Carleman weight. In dimension four we obtain a complete spectrum of examples according to the structure of the Weyl tensor. In particular, we construct unimodular Lie groups whose …

I controlli difensivi

2022

2017

The present paper deals with the decision of the Italian Constitutional Court to refer a preliminary ruling to the European Court of Justice on the well-known case "Taricco". The latter, in 2015, stated that the Italian law on statute of limitations was inconsistent with the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, having regard to the obligation upon Member States, stemming from art. 325 TFUE. The Constitutional Court found that such an interpretation of the afore mentioned norm could bring to a violation of the rule of law in criminal matters, with particular regard to the prohibition of retroactive application of criminal law "in peius", intended as a fundamental principle of the…
