Nucleation in suspensions of anisotropic colloids

We report Monte Carlo studies of liquid crystal nucleation in two types of anisotropic colloidal systems: hard rods and hard ellipsoids. In both cases we find that nucleation pathways differ strongly from the pathways in systems of spherical particles. Short hard rods show an effect of self-poisoning. This part of the article is based on a previous publication [T. Schilling, D. Frenkel, Self-poisoning of crystal nuclei in hard-rod liquids, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 085505]. When a crystallite forms, its surfaces are covered preferentially by rods which align perpendicular to the surface. Therefore subsequent growth is stunted. Characterization of different regimes in nonlinear liquid crystal models

[EN] The range of validity of two models for nonlocal nonlinear optics in Nematic Liquid Crystals (NLC) is studied. Particularly the influence of the optical power and the initial position of the beam over its trajectory is studied when launching the beam with an offset in a planar cell. The main difference between both models is the dependence of the orientational angle with the optical field, either linear or nonlinear. The results demonstrate the critical role of the nonlinearity in the propagation of nematicons in NLC planar cells. © 2012 World Scientific Publishing Company.

ABSTRACT Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) filters offer the speed of electronic light shutters and the vibration free operation. These characteristics make them ideal for applications requiring short exposure times and minimal blur, offering switching times of 0.0002 of a second. FLC filters can be used as the optical shutters for machine vision purposes, also in vision research. On the basis of FLC filters we have developed ferroelectric glasses, allowing temporal separation of optical information for both eyes. Two different sets of ionic liquid crystals based on bistriflimide salts of non-symmetrically substituted polyfluorinated bipyridinium (viologens) and bent symmetrically substituted dialkyl-oxadiazolyl-bipyridinium have been synthesized, in order to study the effect on the mesomorphic and electrooptical properties of the non-symmetric functionalization (alkyl chain and fluoroalkyl chains of different lengths) on the two pyridinium rings and additionally the effect of a bent conjugated spacer among the two pyridinium units of the viologen. Densely packed semiflexible macromolecules in a rigid spherical capsule

The ordering of semiflexible polymers with persistence length lp and contour length L confined in a sphere of radius R is studied by molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model. Monomer densities are chosen where the corresponding bulk lyotropic solution or melt is a well-ordered nematic, and purely repulsive walls of the rigid confining sphere are considered. It is found that polymers close to the walls are bent according to the curvature of the confining spheres with all their monomers in a few layers parallel to the sphere surface, whereas the remaining macromolecules closer to the sphere center have one chain end and their center of mass far from the surface.
