Effect of onion consumption by rats on hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes

2001

Fruits and vegetables or their natural constituents which increase detoxication enzymes and/or reduce activating enzymes are considered as good candidates to prevent chemically-induced carcinogenesis. In this study, rats were fed a diet supplemented with 20% onion powder for 9 days. Several cytochrome P450 (CYP)s enzymes (CYP 1A, 2B, 2E1, 3A), which are involved in carcinogen activation, were determined by measuring their enzyme activities using specific substrates. In addition, phase II enzymes activities such as UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), involved in detoxication of carcinogens, were measured. Protein levels of CYPs and GST A1/A2, A3/A5, Ml, M2 …

Task-specific ionic liquid for the depolymerisation of starch-based industrial waste into high reducing sugars

2014

Development of a simple route for the catalytic conversion of starch-based industrial waste (potato peels) and potato starch into reducing sugars was investigated in two ionic liquids for comparison – 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [AMIM]Cl and 1-(4-sulfobutyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride [SBMIM]Cl. Over a two hour period, a 20 wt% solution containing up to 43% and 98% of reducing sugars at low temperature in aqueous [SBMIM]Cl was achieved for the starch-based waste and the potato starch, respectively. In addition, the use of microwave and low frequency ultrasound to perform the depolymerisation of the raw starch-based material was explored and compared with conventional heating proc…

The Kleiner Feldberg Cloud Experiment 1990. An overview

1994

An overview is given of the Kleiner Feldberg cloud experiment performed from 27 October until 13 November 1990. The experiment was carried out by numerous European research groups as a joint effort within the EUROTRAC-GCE project in order to study the interaction of cloud droplets with atmospheric trace constituents. After a description of the observational site and the measurements which were performed, the general cloud formation mechanisms encountered during the experiment are discussed. Special attention is given here to the process of moist adiabatic lifting. Furthermore, an overview is given regarding the pollutant levels in the gas phase, the particulate and the liquid phase, and som…

Ultrathin Tropical Tropopause Clouds (UTTCs): II. Stabilization mechanisms

2003

Abstract. Mechanisms by which subvisible cirrus clouds (SVCs) might contribute to dehydration close to the tropical tropopause are not well understood. Recently Ultrathin Tropical Tropopause Clouds (UTTCs) with optical depths around 10-4 have been detected in the western Indian ocean. These clouds cover thousands of square kilometers as 200-300 m thick distinct and homogeneous layer just below the tropical tropopause. In their condensed phase UTTCs contain only 1-5% of the total water, and essentially no nitric acid. A new cloud stabilization mechanism is required to explain this small fraction of the condensed water content in the clouds and their small vertical thickness. This work sugges…

Les comportements préalables à la prise lactée chez le souriceau : caractérisation de sécrétions maternelles réactogènes et implication de l'expérien…

2012

Birth is one of the most delicate periods mammalian infants have to deal with. Newborns have then to adapt physiologically and behaviorally to the aerial environment, and one of their first challenges is to ingest colostrum and milk. It is paradoxical that the survival of pups is conditioned by the success of this first suckling, and that we have so little understanding of the stimuli that underlie and promote it. Thus, the present work aims to contribute to answer how immature and naïve newborns do manage to orient to a nipple, to grasp it, and to suckle efficiently? This general issue will be addressed in the mouse in focusing on: i) the nature of the chemical substrates that newborn mice…

Ecological role of mycotoxins produced by Fusarium graminearum : consequences of the presence of deoxynivalenol (DON) in crop residues on the soil mi…

2012

Fusarium graminearum is a plant pathogenic fungus, causing devastating disease “Fusarium head blight” (FHB) in cereals including wheat and maize. It also contaminates the grains with mycotoxins including deoxynivalenol (DON) which are toxic to human and animals. This disease has resulted in the serious losses in grain yield and quality. We established through a first bibliographic review that during off season fungus survives saprophytically on the crop residues (ecological habitat) and serves as primary inoculum for the next season crop. However, we noticed also that the literature was poor about the role mycotoxins could play in the establishment of F. graminearum in such a habitat. The m…

Determination of taste-active compounds of a bitter camembert cheese by omission tests

2001

The taste-active compounds of a Camembert cheese selected for its intense bitterness defect were investigated. The water-soluble fraction (WSE) was extracted with pure water and fractionated by successive tangential ultrafiltrations and nanofiltration. The physicochemical assessment of these fractions led to the construction of a model WSE which was compared by sensory evaluation to the crude water-soluble extract, using a panel of 16 trained tasters. As no significant difference was perceived, this model WSE was then used directly or mixed with other cheese components for omission tests. Among the main taste characteristics of the WSE (salty, sour, umami and bitter), bitterness was found t…
