Experimental setup for analysis of sorption and desorption of tritium in liquid lithium under different external conditions
2013
An original complex device has been designed and created specially for this research. Some of tritium sorption and thermal desorption in liquid lithium experiments has been successfully done already. First experiment series were carried out under reduced pressure (vacuum) to rule out other operating gases (like Ar) that may squeeze out tritium from lithium. Experiments showed good tritium desorption from lithium which highly depends on the temperature. A proportional gas counter tritium monitor was used to collect data from tritium thermal desorption experiments.
Thermal behaviour and electrochemical properties of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide and dodecatungstosilicate viologen dimers
2012
We report the synthesis and characterization of dimeric viologen salts (1',1''-(alkane-1,n-diyl)bis(1-ethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) with n = 4-10) with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (bistriflimide, Tf(2)N(-)) as a counteranion. For n = 4, 5 and 6, and for the nonylviologen cation (1,1'-dinonyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) we also prepared salts with the totally inorganic dodecatungstosilicate anion, SiW(12)O(40)(4-), featuring a poly-charged surface and nanosized dimensions. The materials have been characterized by means of calorimetric techniques, X-ray diffraction and solid state NMR and a comparison is made with analogous monomeric viologen salts exhibiting smectic mesophases. A strong odd-even ef…

Synthesis and Characterization of Fluorescent, Low-Symmetry Triphenylene Discotic Liquid Crystals: Tailoring of Mesomorphic and Optical Properties
1996
A series of monofunctionalized triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystals were synthesized starting from 2-hydroxy-3,6,7,10,11-pentakis(pentyloxy)triphenylene. These compounds are unique in that they possess a single electron-withdrawing group (and consequently a large dipole moment) connected directly to the polyaromatic core. All of the new liquid crystals show a significantly broader range of mesogenicity relative to the parent compound 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis(pentyloxy)triphenylene. Moreover, some of the new mesogens exhibit a more ordered mesophase relative to the hexagonal columnar phase (Dh) at lower temperatures. Monofunctionalization of the triphenylene core has a dramatic effect on…
Liquid–liquid equilibria in the system H3PO4–KCl–H2O–tri-n-butyl phosphate: experiments and modelling
2004
Abstract The liquid–liquid equilibria of the system H3PO4–KCl–H2O–TBP was studied experimentally in the concentration range 0–6 mol/kg. The obtained data were modelled using the Pitzer equation for the aqueous phase and the Sergievskii–Dannus relationship for the organic phase. A fairly good agreement was observed between the model and the experimental data.
Application of fast solvent extraction processes to studies of exotic nuclides
1998
Fast solvent extraction is a chemical separation method, which can be applied to study exotic nuclides. Since about 1970 the SISAK technique, which is an on-line method based on multi-stage solvent extraction separations, has been successfully used to investigate the nuclear properties of β-decaying nuclides with half-lives down to about one second. During the last decade it has become possible to produce transactinide elements in high enough yields to investigate their chemical properties on a one-atom-at-a-time scale. For this purpose it was necessary to improve and change the detection part of the SISAK system in order to be capable to detect spontaneously fissioning and α-decaying nucli…
Naturally occurring polyphenols as building blocks for supramolecular liquid crystals – substitution pattern dominates mesomorphism
2021
A modular supramolecular approach towards hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline assemblies based on naturally occurring polyphenols is reported. The combination of experimental observations, crystallographic studies and semi-empirical analyses of the assemblies provides insight into the structure–property relationships of these materials. Here a direct correlation of the number of donor OH-groups as well as their orientation with the mesomorphic behavior is reported. We discovered that the number and orientation of the OH-groups have a stronger influence on the mesomorphic behavior of the supramolecular assemblies than the connectivity (e.g. stilbenoid or chalconoid) of the hydrogen bond donor…
Extraction of the fluoride-, chloride- and bromide complexes of the elements Nb, Ta, Pa, and 105 into aliphatic amines
1998
Abstract Previous studies of the halide complex formation of element 105 in HCl–HF mixtures and extractions into triisooctyl amine (TIOA) have been performed with the Automated Rapid Chemistry Apparatus, ARCA II. Element 105 was shown to be absorbed on the column from 12 M HCl–0.02 M HF together with its lighter homologues Nb, Ta and the pseudohomologue Pa. In elutions with 10 M HCl–0.025 M HF, 4 M HCl–0.02 M HF, and 0.5 M HCl–0.01 M HF, the extraction sequence Ta>Nb>105>Pa was observed and element 105 behaved very differently from its closest homologue Ta. As it is not possible within reasonable effort to model the many presumably mixed fluoride–chloride complexes involved in these studies…
The expanding role of LC-MS in analyzing metabolites and degradation products of food contaminants
2008
Abstract Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has contributed significantly in advancing research in the analysis of metabolites and degradation products of food contaminants. Of particular interest is the comprehensive application of LC-MS to discovery of degradation products and metabolites. This review, covering research published between 2003 and 2008, describes how LC-MS has been used in this field, with the majority of work dealing with target-metabolite analysis and only a small fraction using LC-MS comprehensively. In considering the significance of this topic and the potential interest in it, we briefly describe state-of-the art mass analyzers applied for it (QtrAP, QqTO…
Properties of new low melting point quaternary ammonium salts with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion
2010
Eight new monocationic quaternary ammonium (QA) salts with the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion were prepared by metathesis using our previously reported QA halides as precursors. New salts were characterized both in liquid and solid state using 1 H and 13 C NMR techniques, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis together with X-ray diffraction and thermoanalytical methods. In addition, residual water content, viscosity and conductivity measurements were made for three of the roomtemperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The crystal structures of three compounds were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Powder diffraction was used to study the crystallinity of the solid …
