Uptake of silica covered Quantum Dots into living cells: Long term vitality and morphology study on hyaluronic acid biomaterials

2015

Quantum Dots (QDs) are promising very bright and stable fluorescent probes for optical studies in the biological field but water solubility and possible metal bio-contamination need to be addressed. In this work, a simple silica-QD hybrid system is prepared and the uptake in bovine chondrocytes living cells without any functionalization of the external protective silica shield is demonstrated. Moreover, long term treated cells vitality (up to 14 days) and the transfer of silica-QDs to the next cell generations are here reported. Confocal fluorescence microscopy was also used to determine the morphology of the so labelled cells and the relative silica-QDs distribution. Finally, we employ sil…

APOBEC4 Enhances the Replication of HIV-1

2016

APOBEC4 (A4) is a member of the AID/APOBEC family of cytidine deaminases. In this study we found a high mRNA expression of A4 in human testis. In contrast, there were only low levels of A4 mRNA detectable in 293T, HeLa, Jurkat or A3.01 cells. Ectopic expression of A4 in HeLa cells resulted in mostly cytoplasmic localization of the protein. To test whether A4 has antiviral activity similar to that of proteins of the APOBEC3 (A3) subfamily, A4 was co-expressed in 293T cells with wild type HIV-1 and HIV-1 luciferase reporter viruses. We found that A4 did not inhibit the replication of HIV-1 but instead enhanced the production of HIV-1 in a dose-dependent manner and seemed to act on the viral L…

Effect of Material Organization on Memory in an Incidental Learning Task Performed under Repeated Maintenance

2009

The present paper investigates the effect of organizational variables on long term retention of material recycled under maintenance rehearsal. Subjects repeated a series of words as a distracting task, expecting to be tested on the recall of numbers (GLENBERG & ADAMS, 1978). An unexpected test on the recall of words showed the superiority of the recall of organized words, and a significant interaction of organization by time spent in repetition of the distractor material. The present experiment, because of the requirement of written, and not oral, repetition of the distractor material, is a more stringent test of the postulated consequences of type I rehearsal according to leve1 of processi…

Intermittent Low-Dose IFN Gamma Treatment for Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma: Analysis of Factors Predicting Clinical Response and Long-Term Survival

1995

Background: Objective tumor remissions are induced by a variety of immunomodulating agents in a minority of patients suffering from metastasizing renal cell carcinoma. The results of different clinical studies, however, varied greatly for each of these treatment modalities. In order to elucidate potential causes for this variability and to further study the long-term results of intermittent low-dose IFN gamma therapy in patients with advanced renal cell cancer (RCC) we retrospectively analyzed factors predicting clinical response and long-term survival of 121 patients. Material and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical results of 5 phase II studies treating 121 patients with int…

MALNUTRITION IS ASSOCIATED WITH DEPRESSION IN LONG-TERM CARE POPULATION

2018

Rationale: Frailty in elderly is a multifactorial syndrome and is associatet with an increased risk of poor health outcomes (falls, disability, hospital- ization and mortality), malnutrition and depression are the must impor- tant factors contributing to frailty. This study describes the application of multidimensional evaluation for the early identification of frailty in long- term care population. Methods: Clinical data from 100 long-term care inpatients (53 female and 47 male, mean age 69.6 years) were collected at the ARNAS Civico- DiCristina-Benfratelli, Palermo, Italy. Each inpatient had undergone a multidimensional assessment through a multiprofessional team. Nutri- tional state was a…

Molecular Characterization of a Long Term Survivor Double Metastatic Non Small Sell Lung Cancer and Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Treated with Gef…

2019

Management of multiple primary cancers, a not so infrequent event in oncology practice, is a critical issue due to the lack of literature . In this study, we reported the case of a patient with metachronous double metastatic non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who received gefitinib in combination with gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel and with mFOLFOX6 in first and second line, respectively. She achieved a progression free survival and an overall survival (OS) of 28 months for NSCLC and PFS-1 and OS of 20 and 13 months, respectively for PDAC. Moreover, the combination of gefitinib and chemotherapies treatments displayed a good safety profile. Given …

CONTINUITA' OSPEDALE TERRITORIO

2015
