The Dynamics of (De)Stigmatization : Boundary construction in the nascent category of organic farming

This study finds that it is possible for organizations in emerging categories to resist stigmatization through discursive reconstruction of the central and distinctive characteristics of the category in question. We examined the emerging market of organic farming in Finland and discovered how resistance to stigmatization was both an internal and an external power struggle in the organic farming community. Abstract Pioneers of organic farming often faced social challenges as their innovative ideas on agriculture not only encountered opposition in the conventional farming community, but led to stigmatization of organic farmers as social deviants. In this study, we examine what kind of stigma management strategies pioneer organic farmers engage with in order to cultivate an alternative positive image of themselves. Our research is based on the interviews with 14 pioneer organic farmers. Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma selvittää, kuinka Kiuruveden elinkeinopolitiikassa rakennettiin luomuimagoa retorisin keinoin. Tutkimuksessa on kaksi tutkimuskysymystä: miten luomua käytettiin retorisena välineenä ja miksi luomuvision toteuttaminen kohtasi vaikeuksia. Tutkimusmenetelmänä on retorinen analyysi, jossa käytetään Chaim Perelmanin, Albert O. Hirschmanin ja Aristoteleen retoriikan teorioita. Aineistona on Kiuruvesi-lehti, koska se on paikkakunnan poliittisen keskustelun ainoa merkittävä areena. Luonnonmukainen viljely mahdollisuutena : henki ja aine

Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin 34 luonnonmukaisen viljelyn neuvonnan piirissä olevaa viljelijää. Heistä 19 on ruotsinkieliseltä Pohjanmaalta ja 15 Keski-Pohjanmaalta. Tutkimuksessa esitellään haastateltavien taustaa, kokemusta tavanomaisena viljelijänä, onnistumista luonnonmukaisessa viljelyssä, suunnitelmia ja uhkakuvia sekä ennen kaikkea heidän motiivejaan ryhtyä luonnonmukaiseen viljelyyn. Loppuosassa käsitellään sitä, mitä luonnonmukaisella viljelyllä on suomalaisen maaseudun kehitykselle annettavaa.

This chapter discusses the relationship between critical development studies and planetary well-being, showing how the former can add insights to the latter to build a comprehensive theory. Critical development studies is introduced as a field of study, which provides tools to uncover hidden power dynamics and ecologically destructive patterns in contemporary development.
