Underlying event characteristics and their dependence on jet size of charged-particle jet events inppcollisions at(s)=7  TeVwith the ATLAS detector

Distributions sensitive to the underlying event are studied in events containing one or more charged-particle jets produced in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These measurements reflect 800 inverse microbarns of data taken during 2010. Jets are reconstructed using the antikt algorithm with radius parameter R varying between 0.2 and 1.0. Distributions of the charged-particle multiplicity, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of charged particles, and the average charged-particle pT are measured as functions of pT^JET in regions transverse to and opposite the leading jet for 4 GeV < pT^JET < 100 GeV. Bremsstrahlung and the underlying event structure

Abstract In this talk we address the problem of the structure of the underlying event and its dependence upon a specific trigger. Generally speaking, events selected without any special trigger, like the minimum bias events, need not have the same characteristics as those selected by the jet trigger or through the W and Z-boson selection criteria. We use perturbative QCD in order to unfold part of the structure. In particular we concentrate on the contribution to the underlying event structure which comes from initial state bremsstrahlung. Implementing quantum gates through scattering between a static and a flying qubit

We investigate whether a two-qubit quantum gate can be implemented in a scattering process involving a flying and a static qubit. To this end, we focus on a paradigmatic setup made out of a mobile particle and a quantum impurity, whose respective spin degrees of freedom couple to each other during a one-dimensional scattering process. Once a condition for the occurrence of quantum gates is derived in terms of spin-dependent transmission coefficients, we show that this can be actually fulfilled through the insertion of an additional narrow potential barrier. A Collection of recipes could be called a cookbook, but Daan Frenkel and Berend Smit's book achieves more than that. By explaining the physics behind the algorithms, the authors let you learn how molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation methods work, how to apply these methods in a sensible way and what information can be extracted from them. Although computer simulation, lying between analytical theory and experiment, is now regarded as the third branch science, it is still viewed with skepticism some researchers precisely because of this interdisciplinary character.

Spectroscopy of Low-lying States in $^{140}$Sm

International audience; Electromagnetic transition strengths and spectroscopic quadrupole moments for Sm-140 were measured by means of multi-step Coulomb excitation with radioactive beam at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A complementary experiment was performed at the Heavy Ion Laboratory in Warsaw to assign spins for non-yrast states using the angular correlation technique. Based on the new experimental data previous spin assignments need to be revised.

The role of fMRI in neurophysiology has been extensively developed and studied, and its principles lie in the correlation between the brain demand of energy during determined task and its supply. Although being extensively studied, its role for judiciary purpose presents many shortcomings.

Modeling Marginalization: Emergence, Social Physics, and Social Ethics of Bullying

In this paper, we outline the construction and initial simulation experiment results of the Marginalization model (MARG). We experiment under different group parameters because the theoretical paradigm we follow views bullying as a result of social processes. Our primary research question explores the possibility of bullying emergence as agents select interaction partners in a university setting. Based on the simulated process, our results take indications of the stress of marginalization in a student group as a proxy for emer-gent marginalization. Treatment of flying phobia using virtual reality exposure with or without cognitive restructuring: Participant's preferences

This study analyses participants’ preferences regarding two exposure treatment modali- ties for Fear of Flying (FF): virtual reality exposure treatment (VRET) by itself or VRET plus cognitive restructuring (VRET+CR). An alternating treatment conditions design was established and a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across individuals (four participants) was used. Both conditions were equally effective and after the treatment all the participants took a flight. Working Alliance Inventory applied to Virtual and Augmented Reality (WAI-VAR): Psychometrics and Therapeutic Outcomes

This study examines the psychometric properties of the Working Alliance Inventory-Short (WAI-S) adaptation to Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) therapies (WAI-VAR). The relationship between the therapeutic alliance with VR and AR and clinically significant change (CSC) is also explored. Seventy-five patients took part in this study (74.7% women, Mage= 34.41). Fear of flying and adjustment disorder patients received VR therapy, and cockroach phobia patients received AR therapy.
