Resistance and susceptibility to Leishmania major infection in the murine model is determined by the capacity of the host to mount either a protective Th1 response or a Th2 response associated with disease progression. Abstract Objective The bulk of LDL entrapped in the arterial intima is modified by hydrolytic enzymes, leading to extensive cleavage of cholesterylesters and liberation of fatty acids. The latter induce apoptosis in endothelial cells but are far less cytotoxic towards macrophages. We have compared the cytotoxic effects of enzymatically modified LDL (E-LDL) on macrophages and polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMN). Pomace olive oil is a by-product of olive oil extraction that is traditionally produced and consumed in Spain. The nonglyceride matter of this oil is a good source of interesting minor compounds, like long-chain fatty alcohols, which are present free or as part of waxes. In the present study, long-chain fatty alcohols were isolated from the nonglyceride fraction of pomace olive oil, and the composition was identified and quantified. Abstract Background Methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been reported to cause histopathological changes in rodent nasal epithelium after inhalation challenges. Data in humans are lacking. We describe novel biochemical and electron microscopy assays to investigate in vitro fusion of latex bead phagosomes with three different endocytic organelle fractions from J774 macrophages. After formation, early phagosomes fuse avidly with early and late endosomes and for a longer period of time with lysosomes, but they subsequently become fusion-incompetent. The fusion of early, but not late, phagosomes with all three endocytic fractions could be significantly stimulated by Rab5. METHODS: Tissues are complex structures comprised of a heterogeneous population of interconnected cells. LCM offers a method of isolating a single cell type from specific regions of a tissue section. The question of whether similar or different modes of Ia-antigen expression exist in different cell classes and mediate different cell type functions is of primary interest to current class II antigen research. Among cells of the lymphoid system in the mouse, class II antigens are primarily expressed on B lymphocytes (Sachs and Cone 1973) and cells of the macrophage lineage (Cowing et al. 1978), whereas the majority of T lymphocytes do not seem to express endogenously synthesized class II antigens.

Surface modifications of nanoparticles can alter their physical and biological properties significantly. They effect particle aggregation, circulation times, and cellular uptake. This is particularly critical for the interaction with primary immune cells due to their important role in particle processing. We can show that the introduction of a hydrophilic PEG layer on the surface of the polysaccharide-based nanoparticles prevents unwanted aggregation under physiological conditions and decreases unspecific cell uptake in different primary immune cell types.
