Structural characterization and magnetic property studies of a mixed-valence {CoIIICoII4} complex with a μ4-oxo tetrahedral {CoII4} motif

2020

We have synthesized and structurally characterized a new mixed valence pentanuclear Co complex, bearing a rare μ4-O-tetrahedral CoII4 unit, by employing a pyridine-like Schiff base ligand. We have performed DC magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements over polycrystalline samples and chemical quantum computations in order to understand the exchange interaction pattern within Co(II) sites and ground state magnetic anisotropy. This new complex shows an overall antiferromagnetic exchange interaction whose strength strongly depends on the local symmetry of Co(II) sites. Also, local ion magnetic anisotropy reveals a strongly axial behaviour with the lowest Kramers doublet (KD) at ea…

Switching of easy-axis to easy-plane anisotropy in cobalt(ii) complexes

2021

A tetranuclear cubane-type complex [Co4(ntfa)4(CH3O)4(CH3OH)4] (1) with a {Co4O4} core, and a mononuclear complex [Co(ntfa)2(CH3OH)2] (2) have been rationally obtained by adjusting the ratio of the β-diketonate and Co(II) ions, with the synthetic processes being monitored by in situ microcalorimetry. Then, following synthetic conditions to obtain 2, but using three distinct N-donor coligands - 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy), 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (6,6-(CH3)2-bpy) and 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (5,5-(CH3)2-bpy) - three novel mononuclear complexes have been obtained, [Co(ntfa)2(bpy)2] (3), [Co(ntfa)2(6,6-(CH3)2- bpy)2] (4) and [Co(ntfa)2(5,5-(CH3)2-bpy)2] (5). Charge transport through spin-polarized tunnel junction between two spin-split superconductors

2019

We investigate transport properties of junctions between two spin-split superconductors linked by a spin-polarized tunneling barrier. The spin-splitting fields in the superconductors (S) are induced by adjacent ferromagnetic insulating (FI) layers with arbitrary magnetization. The aim of this study is twofold: On the one hand, we present a theoretical framework based on the quasiclassical Green's functions to calculate the Josephson and quasiparticle current through the junctions in terms of the different parameters characterizing it. Our theory predicts qualitative new results for the tunneling differential conductance, $dI/dV$, when the spin-splitting fields of the two superconductors are…

Custom coordination environments for lanthanoids: tripodal ligands achieve near-perfect octahedral coordination for two dysprosium-based molecular na…

2017

Controlling the coordination sphere of lanthanoid complexes is a challenging critical step toward controlling their relaxation properties. Here we present the synthesis of hexacoordinated dysprosium single-molecule magnets, where tripodal ligands achieve a near-perfect octahedral coordination. We perform a complete experimental and theoretical investigation of their magnetic properties, including a full single-crystal magnetic anisotropy analysis. The combination of electrostatic and crystal-field computational tools (SIMPRE and CONDON codes) allows us to explain the static behavior of these systems in detail. Family of Isomeric CuII–LnIII (Ln = Gd, Tb, and Dy) Complexes Presenting Field-Induced Slow Relaxation of Magnetization Only for the Members Containi…

2020

The strategic design and synthesis of two isomeric CuII complexes, [CuLA] and [CuLB], of asymmetrically dicondensed N2O3-donor Schiff-base ligands (where H2LA and H2LB are N-salicylidene-N'-3-methoxysalicylidenepropane-1,2-diamine and N-3-methoxysalicylidene-N'-salicylidenepropane-1,2-diamine, respectively) have been accomplished via a convenient CuII template method. These two complexes have been used as metalloligands for the synthesis of three pairs of Cu-Ln isomeric complexes [CuL(μ-NO3)Ln(NO3)2(H2O)]·CH3CN (for complexes 1A-3A, L = LA, and for complexes 1B-3B, L = LB and Ln = Gd, Tb, and Dy, respectively), all of which have been characterized structurally. In all six isomorphous and is…

Cyanide-bridged coordination polymers constructed from lanthanide ions and octacyanometallate building-blocks

2018

A new series of cyanide-bridged assemblies, {KH[Ln2(2,3-pzdc)2(CH3OH)(H2O)7][M(CN)8]}·5H2O (Ln3+ = Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy; M4+ = Mo and W), were synthesised by self-assembling lanthanide ions and octacyanometallate ions in the presence of pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (2,3-H2pzdc). These compounds have a 3D structure in which octagon-like Ln4M4(CN)8 rings are connected through a second Ln3+ center via the carboxylate groups of one 2,3-pzdc. The resulting 1D channels are filled with K+ ions and lattice water molecules. The temperature and field dependent magnetization studies as well as ab initio calculations indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions between the Gd3+ ions within the GdMo compoun…

Role of Orbital Degeneracy in the Single Molecule Magnet Behavior of a Mononuclear High-Spin Fe(II) Complex

2010

To explain the single-molecule magnet behavior of the mononuclear complex [(tpaMes)Fe](-) we have developed a model that takes into account the trigonal ligand field splitting of the atomic (5)D term of the Fe(II) ion, and the spin-orbital splitting and mixing of the ligand field terms. The ground ligand field term is shown to be the orbital doublet (5)E possessing an unquenched orbital angular momentum. We demonstrate that the splitting of this term cannot be described by the conventional zero-field splitting Hamiltonian proving thus the irrelevance of the spin-Hamiltonian formalism in the present case. The first-order orbital angular momentum is shown to lead to the strong magnetic anisot…

SIMPRE: A software package to calculate crystal field parameters, energy levels, and magnetic properties on mononuclear lanthanoid complexes based on…

2013

This work presents a fortran77 code based on an effective electrostatic model of point charges around a rare earth ion. The program calculates the full set of crystal field parameters, energy levels spectrum, and wave functions, as well as the magnetic properties such as the magnetization, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, and the Schottky contribution to the specific heat. It is designed for real systems that need not bear ideal symmetry and it is able to determine the easy axis of magnetization. Its systematic application to different coordination environments allows magneto-structural studies. The package has already been successfully applied to several mononucle…

Multi-frequency EPR studies of a mononuclear holmium single-molecule magnet based on the polyoxometalate [Ho(III)(W5O18)2]9-.

2012

Continuous-wave, multi-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies are reported for a series of single-crystal and powder samples containing different dilutions of a recently discovered mononuclear Ho(III) (4f(10)) single-molecule magnet (SMM) encapsulated in a highly symmetric polyoxometalate (POM) cage. The encapsulation offers the potential for applications in molecular spintronics devices, as it preserves the intrinsic properties of the nanomagnet outside of the crystal. A significant magnetic anisotropy arises due to a splitting of the Hund's coupled total angular momentum (J = L + S = 8) ground state in the POM ligand field. Thus, high-frequency (50.4 GHz) EPR studies reve…
