Combining magnetic field induced locomotion and supramolecular interaction to micromanipulate glass fibers: toward assembly of complex structures at …

2011

The formation of ordered complex structures is one of the most challenging fields in the research of biomimic materials because those structures are promising with respect to improving the physical and mechanical properties of man-made materials. In this letter, we have developed a novel approach to fabricating complex structures on the mesoscale by combining magnetic-field-induced locomotion and supramolecular-interaction-assisted immobilization. We have employed a magnetic field to locomote the glass fiber, which was modified by the layer-by-layer self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles, to desired positions and have exploited the supramolecular interaction to immobilize glass fiber onto …

Precipitation synthesis of magnetite Fe3O4 nanoflakes

2014

Precipitation can be applied to synthesize magnetite Fe3O4 nanoflakes in an ambient air atmosphere without using any surfactant, templates or special equipment. Magnetite nanoflakes were precipitated from only Fe2+ chloride solution without adding Fe3+. The formation of Fe3O4 nanoflakes is suggested to occur due to formation of an intermediate goethite phase, thus providing anisotropic crystal growth. Compared to other methods, the method presented here is fast and suitable for large scale synthesis.

High pressure in-situ X-ray diffraction study on Zn-doped magnetite nanoparticles

2018

We have performed high pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments on two different samples of Zn-doped magnetite nanoparticles (formula Fe(3-x)ZnxO4; x = 0.2, 0.5). The structural behavior of then a noparticles was studied up to 13.5 GPa for x = 0.2, and up to 17.4 GPa for x = 0.5. We have found that both systems remain in the cubic spinel structure as expected for this range of applied pressures. The analysis of the unit cell volume vs. pressure results in bulk modulus values lower than in both end-members, magnetite (Fe3O4) and zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4), suggesting that chemical disorder may favor compressibility, which is expected to improve the increase of the Neel temperatu…

The surface chemistry of iron oxide nanocrystals: surface reduction of γ-Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 by redox-active catechol surface ligands

2018

The effect of surface functionalization on the structural and magnetic properties of catechol-functionalized iron oxide magnetic (γ-Fe2O3) nanocrystals was investigated. γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized from iron acetyl acetonate in phenyl ether with 1,2-tetradecanediol, oleic acid, and oleylamine. X-ray powder diffraction in combination with Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed the presence of γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) particles only. Replacement of oleic acid (OA) with catechol-type 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid (DHCA) or polydentate polydopamine acrylate (PDAm) surface ligands leads to a pronounced change of the magnetic behavior of the γ-Fe2O3 nanocrystals and separated them into two …

Self-Assembled Monolayer-Functionalized Half-Metallic Manganite for Molecular Spintronics

2012

(La,Sr)MnO(3) manganite (LSMO) has emerged as the standard ferromagnetic electrode in organic spintronic devices due to its highly spin-polarized character and air stability. Whereas organic semiconductors and polymers have been mainly envisaged to propagate spin information, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been overlooked and should be considered as promising materials for molecular engineering of spintronic devices. Surprisingly, up to now the first key step of SAM grafting protocols over LSMO surface thin films is still missing. We report the grafting of dodecyl (C12P) and octadecyl (C18P) phosphonic acids over the LSMO half-metallic oxide. Alkylphosphonic acids form ordered self-a…

Microstructural and magnetic characterization of fly ash from Kolaghat Thermal Power Plant in West Bengal, India

2011

Abstract This paper reports on the physical nature of the fly ash sample of the Kolaghat Thermal Power Plant, India with an emphasis on its ultrafine nature. This paper also deals with the measurement of the magnetic properties of the fine particles of the fly ash sample. Particle sizes of this fly ash sample estimated from the SEM images lie within 0.16–5.50 μm, and the EDX spectral analysis indicates the presence of O, Al, Si, C, Fe, Mg, Na, K and Ti in this sample. From the XRD study, it is found that physical nature of conglomeration in the fly ash is crystalline and the major components are mullite (Al 6 Si 2 O 13 ) and quartz (SiO 2 ). Additionally, the presence of hematite, microclin…

Synthesis of a Hydrothermally Stable, Periodic Mesoporous Material Containing Magnetite Nanoparticles, and the Preparation of Oriented Films

2006

Magnetite nanoparticles modified covalently with triethoxysilane having a quaternary dicetyl ammonium ion are used together with tetraethylorthosilicate as building blocks to prepare a mesoporous material. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide is used as a structure-directing agent under conditions typically used for mesoporous MCM-41 silicas. The resulting mesoporous material (MAG-MCM-41), containing up to 15 wt % of magnetite is characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), isothermal gas adsorption, and X-ray diffraction. In contrast to siliceous MCM-41, mesoporous MAG-MCM-41 exhibits a remarkable hydrothermal stability. The magnetic properties of MAG-MCM-41 are characterized by DC a…

Synthesis and properties of magnetic iron oxide/platinum nanocomposites

2015

Iron oxide/platinum nanocomposites have been synthesized by the extractive-pyrolytic method (EPM) involving gradual decomposition of iron capronate and n-trioctylammonium hexachloroplatinate initially produced by solvent extraction. The content of platinum in the composites was 1.2 wt%, 2.4 wt% and 4.8 wt%. Phase composition, morphology and magnetic properties of the produced materials were investigated. XRD analysis and magnetic measurements show that the magnetic phase (magnetite Fe3O4) dominates in a carrier sample produced by the pyrolysis of iron carboxylate, but hematite α-Fe2O3 exists there as an admixture. Referring to the TEM results, the produced composites contain ultra-disperse …

Hybrid magnetite–gold nanoparticles as bifunctional magnetic–plasmonic systems: three representative cases

2020

Hybrid systems based on magnetite and gold nanoparticles have been extensively used as bifunctional materials for bio- and nano-technology. The properties of these composites are assumed to be closely related to the magnetite to gold mass ratio and to the geometry of the resulting hetero-structures. To illustrate this, we compare and analyze the optical and magnetic properties of core-shell, dumbbell-like dimers and chemical cross-linked pairs of magnetite and gold nanoparticles in detail. We explore how the combination of gold with magnetite can lead to an improvement of the optical properties of these systems, such as tunability, light scattering enhancement or an increase of the local el…
