Element-Selective Magnetic Imaging in Exchange-Coupled Systems by Magnetic Photoemission Microscopy

1998

We have used a photoemission microscope to obtain element-resolved magnetic contrast in stacked magnetic thin film systems. Magnetic information is thereby provided by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Elemental sensitivity, which is crucial for studying magnetic coupling phenomena in systems with several different layers, is achieved by tuning the energy of the illuminating photons to atomic absorption edges. We present measurements of a Ni-coated Co micropattern on Cu(001), and a wedged Co/Cr/Fe(001) sample. In the former sample the Ni magnetization is seen to follow the magnetization of the Co pattern, thereby changing from an out-of-plane easy axis in areas without underlying Co to in…

Magnetic coupling and spin topology in linear oxalato-bridged tetranuclear chromium(III)–copper(II) complexes with aromatic diimine ligands

2013

Abstract A novel heterotetranuclear chromium(III)–copper(II) complex of formula {[CrIII(bpy)(ox)2]2CuII2(bpy)2(ox)}·6H2O (1) has been synthesized by the ligand exchange reaction between Ph4P[CrIII(bpy)(ox)2]·H2O and [CuII(bpy)2(NO3)]NO3·MeOH in methanol (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine; ox2− = oxalate dianion). The X-ray crystal structure of 1 consists of neutral oxalato-bridged CrIII2Cu2II zigzag entities which are formed by the monodentate coordination of two [CrIII(bpy)(ox)2]− mononuclear anionic units through one of its two oxalato groups toward a [CuII2(bpy)2(ox)]2+ dinuclear cationic moiety featuring relatively long axial bonds at the square pyramidal CuII ions. Variable temperature (2.0–300 K)…

Magneto-Structural Properties and Theoretical Studies of a Family of Simple Heterodinuclear Phenoxide/Alkoxide Bridged MnIIILnIII Complexes : On the …

2018

A family of MnIIILnIII strictly dinuclear complexes of general formula [MnIII(μ-L)(μ-OMe)(NO3)LnIII(NO3)2(MeOH)] (LnIII = Gd, Dy, Er, Ho) has been assembled in a one pot synthesis from a polydentate, multipocket aminobis(phenol)ligand [6,6'-{(2-(1-morpholyl)ethylazanediyl)bis(methylene)}bis(2-methoxy-4-methylphenol)], Mn(NO3)2·4H2O, Ln(NO3)3· nH2O, and NEt3 in MeOH. These compounds represent the first examples of fully structurally and magnetically characterized dinuclear MnIIILnIII complexes. Single X-ray diffraction studies reveal that all complexes are isostructural, consisting of neutral dinuclear molecules where the MnIII and LnIII metal ions, which exhibit distorted octahedral MnN2O4 …

Electromagnetic moments of quasi-stable particle

2010

We deal with the problem of assigning electromagnetic moments to a quasi-stable particle (i.e., a particle with mass located at particle's decay threshold). In this case, an application of a small external electromagnetic field changes the energy in a non-analytic way, which makes it difficult to assign definitive moments. On the example of a spin-1/2 field with mass $M_{*}$ interacting with two fields of masses $M$ and $m$, we show how a conventionally defined magnetic dipole moment diverges at $M_{*}=M+m$. We then show that the conventional definition makes sense only when the values of the applied magnetic field $B$ satisfy $|eB|/2M_{*}\ll|M_{*}-M-m|$. We discuss implications of these re…

Surface hysteresis curves of Fe(110) and Fe(100) crystals in ultrahigh vacuum — evidence of adsorbate influences

1992

Abstract We have investigated hysteresis curves of silicon-stabilized Fe(100) and Fe(110) crystals using Polarized Secondary Electron Emission (PSEE) for surface magnetization processes and Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) for bulk hysteresis curves. In particular, the influence of adsorbates (oxygen and sulphur) and surface roughness on the magnetization reversal has been studied. For surface hysteresis curves we found adsorbate-induced reductions of coercive force of up to 50%; the bulk hysteresis curves showed significantly smaller deviations. Similar changes were caused by surface disorder on an atomic scale induced by ion bombardment. The results agree qualitatively with a previous e…

A T‐Shaped μ 3 ‐Oxido Trinuclear Iron Cluster with High Easy‐Plane Anisotropy: Structural and Magnetic Characterization

2008

The synthesis, crystal structure and magnetochemical characterization of a new μ-oxido trinuclear iron cluster (oldnomenclature: μ-oxo trinuclear iron cluster), [Fe3(μ3-O)(μ2-CH3O)2(μ2-CH3COO)2(phen)2Cl3], is reported. The reaction of hydrated FeCl3 with sodium acetate and 1,10-phenanthroline in a mixture of methanol and acetonitrile afforded crystals suitable for X-ray crystallographic determination. The new compound crystallizes in the tetragonal I41/a space group (a = b = 13.6322 A, c = 37.3538 A, Z = 8, V = 6941.7 A3). The core of the complex is an isosceles triangle bridged by a μ3-O ion with a rare T-shaped geometry. The chloride ions are bound terminally, and the phenanthroline ligan…

Systematic measurements of the bohr-weisskpf effect at isolde

1992

The hyperfine anomaly gives an insight into the coupling of spin and orbital magnetic moments in the nucleus. More precisely, the nuclear magnetization is expressible through the nuclear wave functions with which is tested not only the magnetic moment operator, but also the tensor product [s×C2]1. The experiment can then be expected to be of value in testing the nuclear structure theory. The greatest value of these measurements is gained when these are made systematically over a large number of isotopes. We propose to initiate a program at ISOLDE to measure the hyperfine anomaly systematically in the heavy alkali elements. The experimental setup to achieve, in particular, a precise measurem…

Magnetic properties of some rare‐earth magnesium compounds RMg2

1981

The magnetic properties of the compounds PrMg2, NdMg2, DyMg2, and ErMg2 were studied by means of neutron diffraction at various temperatures. All these compounds give rise to ferromagnetic ordering. The absolute values of the magnetic moments in the magnetically ordered state are lower than the free‐ion values. Inelastic neutron scattering at several temperatures was studied in PrMg2 and NdMg2. Analysis of the scattering data in conjunction with the results of specific‐heat and magnetization measurements shows that PrMg2 is an induced‐moment system (G3 ground state), where quadrupolar effects carry a large weight in determining the magnetic properties. The values found for the crystal‐field…

2015

The use of the [Fe(III) (AA)(CN)4](-) complex anion as metalloligand towards the preformed [Cu(II) (valpn)Ln(III)](3+) or [Ni(II) (valpn)Ln(III) ](3+) heterometallic complex cations (AA=2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenathroline (phen); H2 valpn=1,3-propanediyl-bis(2-iminomethylene-6-methoxyphenol)) allowed the preparation of two families of heterotrimetallic complexes: three isostructural 1D coordination polymers of general formula {[Cu(II) (valpn)Ln(III) (H2O)3 (μ-NC)2 Fe(III) (phen)(CN)2 {(μ-NC)Fe(III) (phen)(CN)3}]NO3 ⋅7 H2O}n (Ln=Gd (1), Tb (2), and Dy (3)) and the trinuclear complex [Cu(II) (valpn)La(III) (OH2 )3 (O2 NO)(μ-NC)Fe(III) (phen)(CN)3 ]⋅NO3 ⋅H2O⋅CH3 CN (4) were obtained …
