An isoleucine residue within the carboxyl-transferase domain of multidomain acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase is a major determinant of sensitivity to ar…
2003
Abstract A 3,300-bp DNA fragment encoding the carboxyl-transferase domain of the multidomain, chloroplastic acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) was sequenced in aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP)-resistant and -sensitive Alopecurus myosuroides (Huds.). No resistant plant contained an Ile-1,781-Leu substitution, previously shown to confer resistance to APPs and cyclohexanediones (CHDs). Instead, an Ile-2,041-Asn substitution was found in resistant plants. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequences revealed that Asn-2,041 ACCase alleles derived from several distinct origins. Allele-specific polymerase chain reaction associated the presence of Asn-2,041 with seedling resistance to APPs but not to C…

2016
Abstract Di Gristina, E., G. Gottschlich & F.M. Raimondo (2016). Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from Sicily (Italy). Candollea 71: 7–12. In English, English abstract. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/c2016v711a2 Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains (Sicily, Italy), is described and illustrated. It is morphologically close to Pilosella hoppeana subsp. macrantha (Ten.) S. Braut. & Greuter, but the two subspecies can be distinguished by the indument on the bracts. Its morphology, distribution, ecology, taxonomic relat…
Epimagnolin A, a tetrahydrofurofuranoid lignan from Magnolia fargesii, reverses ABCB1-mediated drug resistance.
2018
Abstract Background Epimagnolin A is an ingredient of the Chinese crude drug Shin-i, derived from the dried flower buds of Magnolia fargesii and Magnolia flos, which has been traditionally used for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and nasal congestion, empyema, and sinusitis. The pharmacokinetic activity of epimagnolin A remains to be evaluated. Purpose In this study, we examined the possible interactions of epimagnolin A with human ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter ABCB1, a membrane protein vital in regulating the pharmacokinetics of drugs and xenobiotics. Study design/methods The interaction of epimagnolin A with ABCB1 was evaluated in calcein, ATPase, and MTT assays by using Flp-I…
Cytotoxicity of South-African medicinal plants towards sensitive and multidrug-resistant cancer cells
2016
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Traditional medicine plays a major role for primary health care worldwide. Cancer belongs to the leading disease burden in industrialized and developing countries. Successful cancer therapy is hampered by the development of resistance towards established anticancer drugs. Aim In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxicity of 29 extracts from 26 medicinal plants of South-Africa against leukemia cell lines, most of which are used traditionally to treat cancer and related symptoms. Material and methods We have investigated the plant extracts for their cytotoxic activity towards drug-sensitive parental CCRF-CEM leukemia cells and their multidrug-r…
Cytotoxicity of 18 Cameroonian medicinal plants against drug sensitive and multi-factorial drug resistant cancer cells
2018
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Cameroonian medicinal plants are traditionally used to treat many ailments, including cancer and related diseases. Cancer is characterized as a condition with complex signs and symptoms. It has been recommended that ethnopharmacological usages such as immune and skin disorders, inflammatory, infectious, parasitic and viral diseases should be taken into account when selecting plants for anticancer screenings, since these reflect disease states bearing relevance to cancer or cancer-like symptoms. Aim of the study The present study aims at investigating 20 methanol extracts from 15 Cameroonian medicinal plants on a panel of human cancer cell lines, inclu…
<title>Influence of radiation defects on exciton-magnon interactions in nickel oxide</title>
2005
Influence of radiation defects on the optical absorption spectrum of nickel oxide (NiO) was studied at 6 K in the near-IR energy range of 7750-8300 cm-1 corresponding to the magnetic-dipole transition 3A 2g(F )->3T 2g(F ) at nickel sites. NiO single crystals grown by the method of chemical transport reactions on the MgO(100) substrates were irradiated by the neutron fluences up to 5x1018 cm-2. Two sharp lines were observed at the low-energy side of the band: the peak at 7805 cm-1 is assigned to the pure exciton transition, whereas the peak at 7845 cm-1, to the exciton-magnon excitation that occurs at the Brillouin zone-center (BZC). An increase of the defect concentration at higher fluences…
Weed communities of rice fields in the central Pamir Alai Mountains (Tajikistan, Middle Asia)
2013
The study present results of geobotanical investigations conducted in rice fields in the central Pamir Alai Mts (Tajikistan, Middle Asia), mainly within Syr-Daria, Pyandzh, Zeravshan, Kafirnigan, Khanaka and Surkhandaria river valleys in the years 2009–2011. The researches were focused on classification of plant communities developing within this poorly investigated area. Habitat conditions were checked including conductometry, pH reaction, temperature, depth of water and, for several plots, also soil structure. Altogether 114 phytosociological relevés using the Braun-Blanquet method were sampled. The analyses classified the vegetation into 28 communities including 24 associations. Five new…
Temperature dependence of the non-local spin Seebeck effect in YIG/Pt nanostructures
2017
We study the transport of thermally excited non-equilibrium magnons through the ferrimagnetic insulator YIG using two electrically isolated Pt strips as injector and detector. The diffusing magnons induce a non-local inverse spin Hall voltage in the detector corresponding to the so-called non-local spin Seebeck effect (SSE). We measure the non-local SSE as a function of temperature and strip separation. In experiments at room temperature we observe a sign change of the non-local SSE voltage at a characteristic strip separation d0, in agreement with previous investigations. At lower temperatures however, we find a strong temperature dependence of d0. This suggests that both the angular momen…
Changes in Terpene Content in Milk from Pasture-Fed Cows
2006
Changes of terpene content in milk from cows grazing natural diversified upland pasture were examined in this observational trial. A homogeneous plot divided into 2 subplots was used from May 31 to July 1, 2003 (first growth) and again from October 1 to October 7, 2003 (vegetative regrowth). Each subplot was grazed by 6 dairy cows in 2 ways: strip grazing (SG), with new allocations of pasture strips at 2-d intervals, and paddock grazing (PG). The PG subplot was divided into 3 paddocks and the cows were moved to a new paddock on June 13 and June 24, 2003. Milk from the 6 cows was collected twice a week, pooled, and used for terpene analyses by dynamic headspace gas chromatography-mass spectr…
