Nrf2-interacting nutrients and COVID-19: time for research to develop adaptation strategies
2020
AbstractThere are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of …

Health status of immigrants arrived to Italian coast [Stato di salute degli immigrati approdati sulle coste italiane ]
2014
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors involved in access to Emergency Department (ED) of undocumented immigrants in Lampedusa according to the country of origin. DESIGN: This is a retrospective observational study, carried out on newly arrived undocumented immigrants transferred to ED. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were collected from medical records of Lampedusa ED between January 2012 and May 2013 on 326 undocumented immigrants. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcomes evaluated are demographics characteristics and health condition of undocumented immigrants. RESULTS: In multivariate analysis associated factors to ED visits are: other pathologies rather than traumatic diseases (OR 0.22; p <0.0…
Evaluation of HIV-1 integrase resistance emergence and evolution in patients treated with integrase inhibitors
2020
Abstract Objectives This study evaluated the emergence of mutations associated with integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) resistance (INSTI-RMs) and the integrase evolution in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infected patients treated with this drug class. Methods The emergence of INSTI-RMs and integrase evolution (estimated as genetic distance between integrase sequences under INSTI treatment and before INSTI treatment) were evaluated in 107 INSTI-naive patients (19 drug-naive and 88 drug-experienced) with two plasma genotypic resistance tests: one before INSTI treatment and one under INSTI treatment. A logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate factors associ…
Bacterial etiology of community-acquired pneumonia in immunocompetent hospitalized patients and appropriateness of empirical treatment recommendation…
2020
An accurate knowledge of the epidemiology of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is key for selecting appropriate antimicrobial treatments. Very few etiological studies assessed the appropriateness of empiric guideline recommendations at a multinational level. This study aims at the following: (i) describing the bacterial etiologic distribution of CAP and (ii) assessing the appropriateness of the empirical treatment recommendations by clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for CAP in light of the bacterial pathogens diagnosed as causative agents of CAP. Secondary analysis of the GLIMP, a point-prevalence international study which enrolled adults hospitalized with CAP in 2015. The analysis was l…
Introduction and prolonged circulation of G12 rotaviruses in Sicily
2016
SUMMARYGenotype G12 strains are now considered to be the sixth most prevalent human rotaviruses worldwide. In two Sicilian cities, Palermo and Messina, surveillance of rotavirus circulation performed since 1985 and 2009, respectively, did not detect G12 strains until 2012. From 2012 to 2014 rotavirus infection was detected in 29·7% of 1647 stool samples collected from children admitted for acute gastroenteritis to three Sicilian hospitals in Palermo, Messina and Ragusa. In 2012, G12P[8] was first detected in Palermo and then in Messina where it represented the second most frequent genotype (20% prevalence) after G1P[8]. Thereafter, G12 strains continued to circulate in Sicily, showing a mar…
