Malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumours: an histopathological and immunohistochemical study of three cases with DNA ploidy and morphometric eval…

1998

Aims: Malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumours (MPTT) are rare neoplasms capable of tissue invasion and metastasis, the diagnosis of which is based essentially on histological features. In difficult cases, however, evaluation of additional parameters may be needed to diagnose malignancy. Methods and results We report three cases of MPTT in which, in addition to the histological features, we have determined the DNA ploidy, nuclear area and proliferative fraction. CD34 immunoreactivity has also been tested. Two cases were aneuploid, and one diploid with increased proliferating index. PCNA immunostaining labelled 40% and 80% of tumour cells in aneuploid tumours and 30% of the diploid neopl…

Complete Regression of Melanocytic Nevi: Correlation Between Clinical, Dermoscopic, and Histopathologic Findings in 13 Patients

2012

Background: The complete regression of melanocytic tumors, confirmed by histology, has rarely been reported in the literature. It is very difficult to determine the malignant or benign nature of a regressed tumor, and on occasions, the only indication of malignancy is the subsequent development of metastasis. Material and methods: We performed a descriptive study of melanocytic nevi that had undergone complete, histologically confirmed regression prior to excision in the dermatology department of our hospital over a period of 3 years. We included only lesions in which dermoscopy performed prior to regression showed features that suggested benignity. We assessed various clinical, dermoscopic…

Efficacy of light based detection systems for early detection of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders: Systematic review.

2015

Background Earlier detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is essential for dental professionals to improve patient survival rates. The aim of this systematic review is to to evaluate the effectiveness of devices that utilise the principles of chemiluminescence and tissue autofluorescence as adjuncts in the detection of OSCC and OPMD. Material and Methods The electronic retrieval systems and databases searched for relevant articles were PubMed [MEDLINE] and Science direct. The search was for limited articles published in English or with an English abstract and articles published during the period from January 2005 to April 2014. Clini…

Ziliarkörpermetastase als Ersthinweis auf ein kleinzelliges Bronchialkarzinom1

2000

BACKGROUND About 3-10% of patients suffering from metastatic disease develop metastatic choroidal tumors. In this case report ocular symptoms were the first sign of a systemic malignancy. CASE REPORT A 65-year old man complained of an increasing painful redness of his left eye. He showed a white mass with 10 mm in thickness in the temporal chamber angle with "pseudohypopyon" and secondary glaucoma. Because of increasing pain the eye was removed. Histologic examination showed a small cell carcinoma of the ciliary body with high malignancy, which most probably has to be seen as a metastasis of a carcinoma of the lung, which was detected by internal examination concurrently. In addition, a met…

Biomaterial-Induced Sarcoma

2000

In the study of carcinogenesis most interest has focused on carcinomas, as they represent the majority of human cancers. The recognition of the adenoma-carcinoma sequence both in humans and in animal experimental models has given the field of basic oncology the opportunity to elucidate individual mechanisms in the multistep development of carcinoma. The relative scarcity of human sarcomas coupled with the lack of adequate animal models has hampered understanding of the molecular genetic steps involved. We present an experimental model in the rat in which a high incidence of malignant mesenchymal tumors arise around a subcutaneously implanted biomaterial. Nine commercially available biomater…

Pathogenesis and clinicohistopathological caractheristics of melanoacanthoma: A systematic review.

2015

Introduction: The melanoacanthoma is a rare benign pigmented tumor, characterized by a fast radial growth and clinical behavior similar to melanoma. Color changes in oral mucosa and dermis are consequence of increased melanocyte activity as response to an irritant factor. There is a vast phenotypic variety. It is difficult to distinguish between a benign pigmented lesion and a melanoma at its early stage. Due to its clinical relevance is crucial to diagnose possible malignancy of the lesions. Objectives: The aim of this article is to conduct a systematic review of all published articles, as well as update and evaluate etiologic factors and clinicopathological features. Proposed new grading of oral submucous fibrosis based on cheek flexibility.

2013

Objectives: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a potentially malignant disorder of oral cavity, pharynx and upper digestive tract, characterized by progressive inability to open the mouth. Based on clinical and/or histopathological features, various classifications and grading systems have been put forth till date. The aim of the present study was to study the variance in cheek flexibility in OSMF patients, the observance of which led to the introduction of a new grading for the condition. Material and Methods: The study included 412 patients with OSMF attending to the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology during the period from December 2008 to June 2013. A detailed history and examinat…

Clear Cell Syringoid Carcinoma

2000

Syringoid carcinoma (syringoid "eccrine" carcinoma or eccrine epithelioma) is a rare cutaneous tumor with some controversy regarding its correct definition. It may also be difficult to differentiate from its benign counterpart (syringoma), other adnexal carcinomas, and cutaneous metastasis from adenocarcinomas. We present a case of a syringoid carcinoma of the clear cell variant complemented with an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study, the latter revealing cytoplasmic accumulation of glycogen and presence of intercellular and intracellular lumina in clear tumor cells, as well as diverse hallmarks of malignancy (i.e., perineural invasion, tumor necrosis, and deep invasion). Clear t…

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary gland--a low grade malignant neoplasm? Report of two cases and review of the literature.

1999

Summary Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas (EMC) are rare neoplasms of the salivary gland with an incidence of less than 1% arising predominantly in the parotid gland. Although they are thought to be of low grade malignancy, fatal courses are described. We report a case of EMC of the parotid gland in a 58-year-old woman with an unfavorable course of this disease in long term follow-up. The malignant potential of this tumor is discussed. In addition, we include another case of EMC of the submandibular gland.

Die Rosai-Dorfman-Lymphadenopathie, eine seltene reaktive lymphoproliferative Erkrankung

2008

Aim The established criteria for benignity or malignancy of lymph nodes when evaluated with B-mode ultrasound can be divided into quantitative measures (size, quantity, contour and density) and qualitative parameters (configuration and structure). The validity of these criteria is controversial. Methods Two cases of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) are presented; this is a rare benign reactive disorder in which massive enlargement of cervical lymph nodes often occurs. These enlarged nodes offer a chance to demonstrate and discuss the validity of the sonomorphological criteria. Results The enlarged lymph nodes in SHML fulfill most of the criteria for malignancy. The sa…
