3,3?,5,5?-Tetramethylbenzidme for the colorimetric determination of manganese in water

1998

Manganese can be determined by colorimetry with previous oxidation of Mn(II) in a strong basic medium, using 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine as a chromogenic reagent. The molar absorptivity of the reaction product is 3.4 × 104 mol−1l cm−1l, the detection limit 3 ng/ml, the RSD (0.5 mg/l,n = 8) 0.9% and the calibration range (1-cm cells) 0.02–0.8 mg/1 V(V), Cr(VI) and Co(II) are the most significant interferences. The new method was compared with an AAS procedure (air-acetylene flame) with previous solvent extraction and also with a colorimetric method for the determination of manganese in sea and drinking water.

A tandem-flow assembly for the chemiluminometric determination of hydroquinone

2003

A direct chemiluminescent procedure for determination of hydroquinone based on the emergent flow methodology known as multicommutation or tandem-flow is presented for first time. The manifold was based on a set of three channels and three solenoid valves; and, the determination was performed at 60degreesC and at flow-rate of 7.5 ml min(-1). The complete cycle lasted 35 s, which resulted in a sample flow trough of 103 h(-1). The chemical process was the hydroquinone oxidation with the system sulphuric acid-potassium permanganate; and the light emission was clearly enhanced by the presence of quinine sulphate and benzalkonium chloride reaching a detection limit of 30 Rg l(-1). The dynamic int…

Flow injection-chemiluminescence determination of octyl dimethyl PABA in sunscreen formulations

2002

Abstract A sensitive flow injection (FI) procedure was developed for the determination of the UV-filter octyl dimethyl PABA in sunscreen formulations based on its chemiluminescence (CL) induced by potassium permanganate in sulfuric acid. Both second-order and log–log calibration graphs can be used to perform the analysis. Ninety injections per hour can be carried out, which means a sample throughput of 18 h −1 if five injections per solution are performed. The limit of detection (3 σ ) was 25 ng ml −1 . The interference effects of the excipient and other UV filters are studied. Sunscreen formulations containing octyl dimethyl PABA were analysed by both the proposed FI-CL method and a liquid…

Self-assembly of a chiral three-dimensional manganese(II)-copper(II) coordination polymer with a double helical architecture

2013

The use of the anionic dicopper(ii) complex, [CuII(mpba) 2]4- [mpba = N,N′-1,3-phenylenebis(oxamate)], as tetrakis(bidentate) metalloligand toward MnII ions in the presence of oxalate and the chiral (S)-trimethyl-(1-phenylethyl)ammonium cation affords the first example of a mixed oxalato/oxamato-based chiral 3D metal-organic polymer. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Natural organic matter coagulation in Valencia water supply. Pilot plant studies

1998

: To reduce disinfection by-product (DBP) formation in drinking water treatment, the presence of natural organic matter in surface waters must be minimised. This paper describes pilot plant studies carried out on two surface waters to assess the effectiveness of coagulation in organic matter removal, the Turia and Jucar rivers, which supply the city of Valencia (1m inhabitants). The experiments were conducted with different coagulants (iron sulphate, polyaluminium chloride (PACl)) and treatment schemes. Process effectiveness was evaluated in terms of effluent turbidity, presence of residual metal in final water, and organic matter removal. Four parameters were used to quantify organic matte…

Coordinating behaviour of a new pyridylhydrazone; tris-complexes of manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) with 2-pyridylcarb…

1991

The preparation and characterization oftris-complexes of MnII, CoII, NiII, CuII and ZnII with a new pyridylhydrazone, 2-pyridylcarbaldehyde-N,N-dimethylhydrazone (pch), are described. In all the complexes pch behaves as a bidentate ligand binding through the pyridine and azomethyne nitrogen atoms. The complexes appear to be monomeric, high spin six-coordinate, and a distorted octahedral stereochemistry around the metal is suggested. The e.p.r. results for both CuII compounds indicate a mainly dx2−y2 ground state with a static Jahn-Teller distortion, whilst for the MnII complex the e.p.r. data indicates a very low symmetry for the MnN6 polyhedron.

Evidence for Increased neutron and proton excitations between 51−63 Mn

2015

The hyperfine structures of the odd-even 51−63Mnatoms (N=26 −38) were measured using bunched beam collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. The extracted spins and magnetic dipole moments have been compared to large-scale shell-model calculations using different model spaces and effective interactions. In the case of 61,63Mn, the results show the increasing importance of neutron excitations across the N=40subshell closure, and of proton excitations across the Z=28shell gap. These measurements provide the first direct proof that proton and neutron excitations across shell gaps are playing an important role in the ground state wave functions of the neutron-rich Mn isotopes. publisher: Els…

Oral intake of cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, nickel, manganese and zinc in the university student's diet.

1993

A duplicate diet meal study was carried out with a group of university students living in a hostel, in order to estimate the intake of Zn, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb. Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Cd, Co and Pb by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry after a nitric acid wet digestion procedure. The estimated intake values from the contents of breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks were compared with the values of the Provisional Tolerable Daily Intake (PTDI) in the case of Cd and Pb, Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) of Co, Fe and Zn and Estimated Safe and Adequate Dietetic Daily Intake (ESADDI) of Cu and Mn. Ultrasonic cavitation induced water in vegetable oil emulsion droplets--a simple and easy technique to synthesize manganese zinc ferrite nanocrystals…

2012

In the present investigation, synthesis of manganese zinc ferrite (Mn(0.5)Zn(0.5)Fe(2)O(4)) nanoparticles with narrow size distribution have been prepared using ultrasound assisted emulsion (consisting of rapeseed oil as an oil phase and aqueous solution of Mn(2+), Zn(2+) and Fe(2+) acetates) and evaporation processes. The as-prepared ferrite was nanocrystalline. In order to remove the small amount of oil present on the surface of the ferrite, it was subjected to heat treatment at 300 °C for 3h. Both the as-prepared and heat treated ferrites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), TGA/DTA, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersion X…
