Mappings of finite distortion from generalized manifolds

2014

We give a definition for mappings of finite distortion from a generalized manifold with controlled geometry to a Euclidean space. We prove that the basic properties of mappings of finite distortion are valid in this context. In particular, we show that under the same assumptions as in the Euclidean case, mappings of finite distortion are open and discrete.

Time‐gated Raman and laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy in mapping of eudialyte and catapleiite

2019

Abstract Raman analysis of rock samples containing rare earth elements (REEs) is challenging due to the strong fluorescence, which may mask the weaker Raman signal. In this research, time‐gated (TG) Raman has been applied to the construction of the mineral distribution map from REE‐bearing rock. With TG Raman, material is excited with a short subnanosecond laser pulse, and the Raman signal is collected within a picosecond‐scale time window prior to the formation of a strong fluorescent signal by means of single‐photon avalanche diode array. This allows signal readout with a significantly reduced fluorescence background. TG Raman maps are used to reveal the location of valuable minerals and …

Detection of planar defects caused by ion irradiation in Si using molecular dynamics

2007

We have analyzed the evolution of defects caused by self-irradiation of crystalline silicon. A classical molecular dynamics simulation was followed by defect analysis using the Pixel Mapping (PM) method. The PM identified {311} planar defects and long-chain structures of the so-called interstitial chains following low energy (1 keV) ion impact. The areal density obtained from simulation of self-interstitial atoms was about two thirds of that of experiments reported in the literature [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 30 (1991) L639], while the atomic configuration on respective planes agreed exactly.

Smartphone snapshot mapping of skin chromophores under triple-wavelength laser illumination

2017

Abstract Chromophore distribution maps are useful tools for skin malformation severity assessment and for monitoring of skin recovery after burns, surgeries, and other interactions. The chromophore maps can be obtained by processing several spectral images of skin, e.g., captured by hyperspectral or multispectral cameras during seconds or even minutes. To avoid motion artifacts and simplify the procedure, a single-snapshot technique for mapping melanin, oxyhemoglobin, and deoxyhemoglobin of in-vivo skin by a smartphone under simultaneous three-wavelength (448–532–659 nm) laser illumination is proposed and examined. Three monochromatic spectral images related to the illumination wavelengths …

Mapping Ash CaCO3, pH, and Extractable Elements Using Principal Component Analysis

2017

Abstract Ash cover in fire-affected areas is an important factor in the reduction of soil erosion and increased availability of soil nutrients. Thus it is important to understand the spatial distribution of ash and its capacity for soil protection and to provide nutrients to the underlying soil. In this work, we aimed to map ash CaCO3, pH, and select extractable elements using a principal component analysis (PCA). Four days after a medium to severe wildfire, we established a grid in a 9 ×27 m area on a west facing slope and took ash samples every 3 m for a total of 40 sampling points. The PCA carried out retained five different factors. Factor 1 had high positive loadings for ash with elect…

A Raman spectroscopy study of the oxidation processes in synthetic chromite FeCr2O4

2020

Abstract A crystal of synthetic chromite FeCr2O4 has been annealed in air at 700 °C for 50 days at room pressure in order to study physical-chemical changes. After the annealing treatment, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of the polished surface of the sample showed areas of different composition. Detailed Raman mapping revealed that the annealed chromite undergoes an oxidation process, proceeding inwards from the outer surface and leading to the transformation of chromite to magnetite, and ultimately to hematite. The oxidation process also leads to the formation of trellis-like lines, arguably via stress-related mechanisms associated with the phase transformation and consequent vo…

Singular value decomposition approach to the yttrium occurrence in mineral maps of rare earth element ores using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

2017

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used in analysis of rare earth element (REE) ores from the geological formation of Norra Kärr Alkaline Complex in southern Sweden. Yttrium has been detected in eudialyte (Na15 Ca6(Fe,Mn)3 Zr3Si(Si25O73)(O,OH,H2O)3 (OH,Cl)2) and catapleiite (Ca/Na2ZrSi3O9·2H2O). Singular value decomposition (SVD) has been employed in classification of the minerals in the rock samples and maps representing the mineralogy in the sampled area have been constructed. Based on the SVD classification the percentage of the yttrium-bearing ore minerals can be calculated even in fine-grained rock samples. peerReviewed

Elastoplastic analysis by active macro-zones with linear kinematic hardening and von Mises materials.

2014

In this paper a strategy to perform elastoplastic analysis with linear kinematic hardening for von Mises materials under plane strain conditions is shown. The proposed approach works with the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method applied to multidomain problems using a mixed variables approach, to obtain a more stringent solution. The elastoplastic analysis is carried out as the response to the loads and the plastic strains, the latter evaluated through the self-equilibrium stress matrix. This matrix is used both, in the predictor phase, for trial stress evaluation and, in the corrector phase, for solving a nonlinear global system which provides the elastoplastic solution of the active…

An approximate fixed point result for multivalued mappings under two constraint inequalities

2017

We consider an approximate multivalued fixed point problem under two constraint inequalities, for which we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one solution. Then, we present some consequences and related results.
