On proper branched coverings and a question of Vuorinen

2022

We study global injectivity of proper branched coverings from the open Euclidean n$n$-ball onto an open subset of the Euclidean n$n$-space in the case where the branch set is compact. In particular, we show that such mappings are homeomorphisms when n=3$n=3$ or when the branch set is empty. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding cases of a question of Vuorinen. Optimal maps and exponentiation on finite dimensional spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below

2013

We prove existence and uniqueness of optimal maps on $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces under the assumption that the starting measure is absolutely continuous. We also discuss how this result naturally leads to the notion of exponentiation.

Polynomial and horizontally polynomial functions on Lie groups

2022

We generalize both the notion of polynomial functions on Lie groups and the notion of horizontally affine maps on Carnot groups. We fix a subset $S$ of the algebra $\mathfrak g$ of left-invariant vector fields on a Lie group $\mathbb G$ and we assume that $S$ Lie generates $\mathfrak g$. We say that a function $f:\mathbb G\to \mathbb R$ (or more generally a distribution on $\mathbb G$) is $S$-polynomial if for all $X\in S$ there exists $k\in \mathbb N$ such that the iterated derivative $X^k f$ is zero in the sense of distributions. First, we show that all $S$-polynomial functions (as well as distributions) are represented by analytic functions and, if the exponent $k$ in the previous defini…

Invariant Jordan curves of Sierpinski carpet rational maps

2015

In this paper, we prove that if $R\colon\widehat{\mathbb{C}}\to\widehat{\mathbb{C}}$ is a postcritically finite rational map with Julia set homeomorphic to the Sierpi\'nski carpet, then there is an integer $n_0$, such that, for any $n\ge n_0$, there exists an $R^n$-invariant Jordan curve $\Gamma$ containing the postcritical set of $R$.

Electrical Coupling in Ensembles of Nonexcitable Cells: Modeling the Spatial Map of Single Cell Potentials

2015

We analyze the coupling of model nonexcitable (non-neural) cells assuming that the cell membrane potential is the basic individual property. We obtain this potential on the basis of the inward and outward rectifying voltage-gated channels characteristic of cell membranes. We concentrate on the electrical coupling of a cell ensemble rather than on the biochemical and mechanical characteristics of the individual cells, obtain the map of single cell potentials using simple assumptions, and suggest procedures to collectively modify this spatial map. The response of the cell ensemble to an external perturbation and the consequences of cell isolation, heterogeneity, and ensemble size are also ana…

Urban MEMS based seismic network for post-earthquakes rapid disaster assessment

2014

Abstract. In this paper, we introduce a project for the realization of the first European real-time urban seismic network based on Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. MEMS accelerometers are a highly enabling technology, and nowadays, the sensitivity and the dynamic range of these sensors are such as to allow the recording of earthquakes of moderate magnitude even at a distance of several tens of kilometers. Moreover, thanks to their low cost and smaller size, MEMS accelerometers can be easily installed in urban areas in order to achieve an urban seismic network constituted by high density of observation points. The network is being implemented in the Acireale Municipality (…

A novel bio-orthogonal cross-linker for improved protein/protein interaction analysis

2015

International audience; The variety of protein cross-linkers developed in recent years illustrates the current requirement for efficient reagents optimized for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. To date, the most widely used strategy relies on commercial cross-linkers that bear an isotopically labeled tag and N-hydroxysuccinimid-ester (NHS-ester) moieties. Moreover, an enrichment step using liquid chromatography is usually performed after enzymatic digestion of the cross-linked proteins. Unfortunately, this approach suffers from several limitations. First, it requires large amounts of proteins. Second, NHS-ester cross-linkers are poorly efficient because of their fast hydrolysis in water. Fin…

Receptor-guided 3D-QSAR approach for the discovery of c-kit tyrosine kinase inhibitors

2012

Studies of the the three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationships for ninety-five c-kit tyrosine kinase inhibitors were performed. Based on a co-crystallized compound (1 T46), known inhibitors were aligned with c-kit by induced-fit docking, and multiple training/test set splitting was performed to validate the selected pharmacophore model. The best pharmacophore model consisted of five features: one hydrogen-bond donor and four aromatic rings. Reliable statistics were obtained (R 2 = 0.95, R pred 2  = 0.75), and the model was validated by using it to select c-kit inhibitors from a database; 82.1% of the hits it retrieved were active. Accordingly, our model can be reliably u…

La questione del confine italo-francese sul Monte Bianco

2020

Even though the common interest of France and Italy in relation to their Alpine border should be enhancing co-operation on cross-border issues (such as improving climate change adaptation as well as preventing and managing risks) a dispute on the delimitation of the border in the area around Monte Bianco has arisen in last years. As any other international dispute on territorial borders, it presents three different plans of analysis: the interpretation of boundary treaties and their official maps; the legal weight of “other” maps; the relationship between the boundary treaty and subsequent practice of the Parties (above all the relevance of effectivités). This article shortly discusses thes…
