Procalcitonin levels in candidemia versus bacteremia: a systematic review

2019

Background Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker used to assess systemic inflammation, infection, and sepsis and to optimize antimicrobial therapies. Its role in the in the differential diagnosis between candidemia and bacteremia is unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the current evidence about PCT values for differentiating candidemia from bacteremia. Methods PubMed and EMBASE were searched for studies reporting data on the diagnostic performance of serum PCT levels in intensive care unit (ICU) or non-ICU adult patients with candidemia, in comparison to patients with bacteremia. Results We included 16 studies for a total of 45.079 patients and 785 cases of candidemia. …

A phase II study of elacytarabine in combination with idarubicin and of human equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 expression in patients with acut…

2013

Unlike cytarabine, cellular entry of Elacytarabine, the elaidic acid ester derivative of cytarabine, is independent of the human equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 (hENT1). This phase II study tested whether the hENT1 blast expression level can be used as a predictive marker for cytarabine response and if the efficacy of elacytarabine is independent of hENT1 expression. A total of 51 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) induction failure were given elacytarabine-idarubicin as a second induction course. The hENT1 expression level was analyzed prior to first induction and/or prior to treatment with elacytarabine. The overall response rate (ORR) was 41% and the safety profile was man…

Virologic, hematologic, and immunologic risk factors for classic Kaposi sarcoma.

2006

BACKGROUND Classic Kaposi sarcoma (CKS) is an inflammatory-mediated neoplasm that develops in the presence of KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and immune perturbation. In the current study, the authors compared CKS cases with age-matched and sex-matched KSHV-seropositive controls without human immunodeficiency virus-1 infection and markers of viral control, blood counts, CD4-positive and CD8-positive lymphocytes, and serum β-2-microglobulin and neopterin levels. METHODS Viral loads were detected using real-time amplification of the KSHV-K6 and EBV-pol genes, anti-K8.1 (lytic) titers were detected by enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay, and antilatent nuclear antigen (LANA) titers were detec…

Expression of nm23 in gastric carcinoma: association with tumor progression and poor prognosis.

1998

BACKGROUND Expression of nm23 has been shown to be inversely correlated with the metastatic potential of several human cancers. In the current study, the expression and prognostic impact of nm23 was immunohistochemically studied in 413 curatively resected gastric carcinomas. METHODS Tumor sections of the 413 gastric carcinomas were stained with a polyclonal antibody that was raised against the nm23-H1/NDP kinase A, which is identical to the nm23-H1 gene product. RESULTS Expression of nm23 was detected in 84.5% (n = 349) of all tumors, in the majority of cases (71.2%) causing a homogeneous staining reaction in more than 75% of tumor cells. Expression of nm23 was positively correlated with th…

Clinicopathological significance of cell cycle regulation markers in a large series of genetically confirmed Ewing's sarcoma family of tumors.

2010

More than 90% of all Ewing's Sarcoma Family of Tumors (ESFT) exhibit specific chromosomal rearrangements between the EWS gene on chromosome 22 and various members of the ETS gene family of transcription factors. The gene fusion type and other secondary genetic alterations, mainly involving cell cycle regulators, have been shown to be of prognostic relevance in ESFT. However, no conclusive results have been reported. We analyzed the clinicopathological significance of relevant cell cycle regulators in genetically confirmed ESFT. A total of 324 cases were analyzed for the immunohistochemical expression of p53, p21(Waf1/Cip1) , p27(Kip1) and Ki67 and the chromosomal alterations of the p53 and …

Clinical evaluation of pancreatitis-associated protein as a serum marker of hepatocellular carcinoma: Comparison with α-fetoprotein

1998

This study evaluated the significance of serum pancreatitis-associated protein (PAP) assay, as a marker of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in comparison and combined with α-fetoprotein (AFP) assay. Sixty-five patients with HCC, 59 with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 68 asymptomatic controls (C) were studied. PAP and AFP values significantly increased from C to LC and HCC group (p < 0.0001). The area under receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the two markers was not statistically different. At 100% specificity, ROC analysis gave a cut-off level for AFP of 166 IU/l with 40% sensitivity, and a cut-off level of 240 µg/l for PAP with 23% sensitivity. Diagnostic accuracy of combined AFP…

Early stage human colorectal cancer: prognostic value of nm23-H1 protein overexpression

1997

Nm23 gene codifies for a nucleoside diphosphate kinase allowing the intracellular transduction of the signals. In colorectal cancer nm23 protein expression seems related to the progression of the disease. By immunohistochemistry we have studied the intracytoplasmatic nm23 H1 protein expression in 20 patients affected by colorectal cancer at initial stage. In 12 cases it resulted elevated and in four the disease recurred. The overexpression was not correlated with other prognostic factors. Nm23 H1-positive patients affected by colorectal cancer at initial stage could be considered at risk for disease recurrence and included in a more frequent follow-up protocol.

GDF 15 as an anti-apoptotic, diagnostic and prognostic marker in oral squamous cell carcinoma

2011

Growth-differentiation factor 15 (GDF 15) is involved in tumor pathogenesis and its expression is increased in many types of cancers. Functional effects of GDF 15 on oncogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remain unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the apoptotic characteristics of GDF 15 in OSCC cell lines in vitro and to analyze serum GDF 15 concentrations as a diagnostic and prognostic tumor marker for OSCC in vivo. Caspase activity was assessed in OSCC cell lines with the Caspase-Glo 3/7 system. Serum GDF 15 concentrations from 64 patients with histopathological proven OSCC and from 30 healthy volunteers were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent a…

Cytokeratin expression patterns in low-grade papillary urothelial neoplasms of the urinary bladder.

2003

BACKGROUND The differential expression patterns of cytokeratin 20 (CK20) and 34βE12 antigen in low-grade papillary urothelial tumors of the bladder are discussed. METHODS A retrospective study of 120 patients with low-grade papillary bladder tumors (45 neoplasms of low malignant potential and 75 low-grade WHO G1 carcinomas) was performed. All tumors were graded in accordance with the 1998 World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathology (WHO/ISUP) and 1999 WHO classifications. The mean follow-up was 76.6 months (range, 36–168 mos), considering for prognostic purposes the time to first recurrence, or relapse-free interval (RFI), and the total number of recurrent patien…
