Limit order placement as an utility maximization problem and the origin of power law distribution of limit order prices

I consider the problem of the optimal limit order price of a financial asset in the framework of the maximization of the utility function of the investor. The analytical solution of the problem gives insight on the origin of the recently empirically observed power law distribution of limit order prices. In the framework of the model, the most likely proximate cause of this power law is a power law heterogeneity of traders' investment time horizons .

We present an empirical study of the intertwined behaviour of members in a financial market. Exploiting a database where the broker that initiates an order book event can be identified, we decompose the correlation and response functions into contributions coming from different market participants and study how their behaviour is interconnected. We find evidence that (1) brokers are very heterogeneous in liquidity provision -- some are consistently liquidity providers while others are consistently liquidity takers. Parameter-free density functional for the correlation energy in two dimensions

Accurate treatment of the electronic correlation in inhomogeneous electronic systems, combined with the ability to capture the correlation energy of the homogeneous electron gas, allows to reach high predictive power in the application of density-functional theory. For two-dimensional systems we can achieve this goal by generalizing our previous approximation [Phys. Rev. B 79, 085316 (2009)] to a parameter-free form, which reproduces the correlation energy of the homogeneous gas while preserving the ability to deal with inhomogeneous systems. Colle-Salvetti-type local density functional for the exchange-correlation energy in two dimensions

We derive an approximate local density functional for the exchange-correlation energy to be used in density-functional calculations of two-dimensional systems. In the derivation we employ the Colle-Salvetti wave function within the scheme of Salvetti and Montagnani [Phys. Rev. A 63, 052109 (2001)] to satisfy the sum rule for the exchange-correlation hole. We apply the functional for the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas as well as to a set of quantum dots and find a very good agreement with exact reference data.
Semi-local density functional for the exchange-correlation energy of electrons in two dimensions

We present a practical and accurate density functional for the exchange-correlation energy of electrons in two dimensions. The exchange part is based on a recent two-dimensional generalized-gradient approximation derived by considering the limits of small and large density gradients. The fully local correlation part is constructed following the Colle-Salvetti scheme and a Gaussian approximation for the pair density. The combination of these expressions is shown to provide an efficient density functional to calculate the total energies of two-dimensional electron systems such as semiconductor quantum dots. Stock markets and quantum dynamics: A second quantized description

In this paper we continue our description of stock markets in terms of some non-abelian operators which are used to describe the portfolio of the various traders and other observable quantities. After a first prototype model with only two traders, we discuss a more realistic model of market involving an arbitrary number of traders. For both models we find approximated solutions for the time evolution of the portfolio of each trader. In particular, for the more realistic model, we use the stochastic limit approach and a fixed point like approximation. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Price discrimination and market power in export markets: The case of the ceramic tile industry.

This paper combines the pricing-to-market equation and the residual demand elasticity equation to measure the extent of competition in the export markets of ceramic tiles, which has been dominated by Italian and Spanish producers since the late eighties. The findings show that the tile exporters enjoyed substantial market power over the period 1988-1998, and limited evidence that the export market has become more competitive over time.

The euro–dollar exchange rate and equity flows

Abstract I examine equity flows between the US and the euro area and their impact on the euro–dollar exchange rate. I explain equity flows by examining the behavior of an international investor who maintains a minimum variance portfolio. An excess of euro area equity returns over US equity returns generates a flow of equity from the euro area to the US. The equity flow, the purchase of US equities by the euro-area residents, causes appreciation (depreciation) of the dollar (euro), while the purchase of euro area equities by US residents causes appreciation (depreciation) of the euro (dollar).
