A note on k-generalized projections

2007

Abstract In this note, we investigate characterizations for k -generalized projections (i.e., A k  =  A ∗ ) on Hilbert spaces. The obtained results generalize those for generalized projections on Hilbert spaces in [Hong-Ke Du, Yuan Li, The spectral characterization of generalized projections, Linear Algebra Appl. 400 (2005) 313–318] and those for matrices in [J. Benitez, N. Thome, Characterizations and linear combinations of k -generalized projectors, Linear Algebra Appl. 410 (2005) 150–159].

On large orbits of subgroups of linear groups

2019

The main aim of this paper is to prove an orbit theorem and to apply it to obtain a result that can be regarded as a significant step towards the solution of Gluck’s conjecture on large character degrees of finite solvable groups.

Spectral study of {R, s + 1, k}- and {R, s + 1, k, *}-potent matrices

2020

[EN] The {R, s +1, k}- and {R, s +1, k, *}-potent matrices have been studied in several recent papers. We continue these investigations from a spectral point of view. Specifically, a spectral study of {R, s + 1, k} -potent matrices is developed using characterizations involving an associated matrix pencil (A, R). The corresponding spectral study for {R, s+ 1, k, *}-potent matrices involves the pencil (A*, R). In order to present some properties, the relevance of the projector I - AA(#). where A(#) is the group inverse of A is highlighted. In addition, some applications and numerical examples are given, particularly involving Pauli matrices and the quaternions.

Mathematical skills in undergraduate students. A ten-year survey of a Plant Physiology course

2012

In the health and life sciences, as well as in other scientific disciplines, problem solving depends on mathematical skills. However, significant deficiencies are commonly found in this regard in undergraduate students. In an attempt to understand the underlying causes and to improve students' performance, this paper reports a ten-year survey (2000-2010) on mathematical skills of undergraduate Spanish students enrolled in a Plant Physiology course, based on data from tests performed throughout this time period. The results show that the percentage of correct answers decreases for questions requiring some mathematical skills, particularly those needing some calculations. Interestingly, perce…

Mathematical literacy in Plant Physiology undergraduates: results of interventions aimed at improving students' performance

2013

The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. We have performed individual analyses of results obtained during the period 2000-2011, for questions in the examinations requiring and not requiring mathematical skills. Additionally, we present the outcome of two interventions introduced with the aim of helping students improve their prospects for success in the course. Our results confi…

Properties of a matrix group associated to a {K,s+1}-potent matrix

2012

In a previous paper, the authors introduced and characterized a new kind of matrices called {K,s+1}-potent. In this paper, an associated group to a {K, s+1}-potent matrix is explicitly constructed and its properties are studied. Moreover, it is shown that the group is a semidirect product of Z_2 acting on Z_{(s+1)^2-1}. For some values of s, more specifications on the group are derived. In addition, some illustrative examples are given.

Photometric and spectroscopic variability of the B5IIIe star HD 171219

2017

We analyzed the star HD 171219, one of the relatively bright Be stars observed in the seismo field of the CoRoT satellite, in order to determine its physical and pulsation characteristics. Classical Be stars are main-sequence objects of mainly B-type, whose spectra show, or have shown at some epoch, Balmer lines in emission and an infrared excess. Both characteristics are attributed to an equatorially concentrated circumstellar disk fed by non-periodic mass-loss episodes (outbursts). Be stars often show nonradial pulsation gravity modes and, as more recently discovered, stochastically excited oscillations. Applying the CLEANEST algorithm to the high-cadence and highly photometrically precis…

Triply Factorised Groups and the Structure of Skew Left Braces

2021

The algebraic structure of skew left brace has proved to be useful as a source of set-theoretic solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation. We study in this paper the connections between left and right $$\pi $$ -nilpotency and the structure of finite skew left braces. We also study factorisations of skew left braces and their impact on the skew left brace structure. As a consequence of our study, we define a Fitting-like ideal of a left brace. Our approach depends strongly on a description of a skew left brace in terms of a triply factorised group obtained from the action of the multiplicative group of the skew left brace on its additive group.

Frequentist and Bayesian approaches for a joint model for prostate cancer risk and longitudinal prostate-specific antigen data

2015

The paper describes the use of frequentist and Bayesian shared-parameter joint models of longitudinal measurements of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and the risk of prostate cancer (PCa). The motivating dataset corresponds to the screening arm of the Spanish branch of the European Randomized Screening for Prostate Cancer study. The results show that PSA is highly associated with the risk of being diagnosed with PCa and that there is an age-varying effect of PSA on PCa risk. Both the frequentist and Bayesian paradigms produced very close parameter estimates and subsequent 95% confidence and credibility intervals. Dynamic estimations of disease-free probabilities obtained using Bayesian infe…
