Patterns matter: continuous Vs intermittent access to ethanol differently affects withdrawal behavioural phenotype and maternal care in female rats.

2014

Modeling voluntary ethanol consumption in female rats is crucial for gaining further insight in gender-related vulnerability to alcohol. Since ethanol effects depend not only on the amount consumed, but also on drinking pattern, this study aimed at assessing the influence of continuous and intermittent ethanol self-administration on peculiar aspects of female behavioural repertoire during withdrawal and relapse. Female rats undergoing a 15-week-long, 20% ethanol continuous or intermittent (3days/week) access, respectively named CARs and IARs, were tested for alcohol intake (gr/kg) and preference. During withdrawal we assessed: novelty and reward preference in novel object exploration and sa…

Maternal antibody transmission and breeding densities in the Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus

2004

1. The offspring of avian species, especially those of colonial breeders, are exposed to a number of pathogens immediately after birth. The chick's immune system is, at that early stage still immature and inefficient. As a consequence, diseases can have a strong impact on chick survival.2. The ability of mothers to transmit passive immunity in terms of antibodies of their own acquired immunity to their chicks is probably an essential pathway to enhance the chick survival. Since the production of antibodies is costly, females are expected to adjust the transmission of passive immunity to the local disease environment.3. We found that in Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus L.) yolk antibody …

Transgenerational immunity in a bird-ectoparasite system: do maternally transferred antibodies affect parasite fecundity or the offspring's susceptib…

2009

During egg formation, female birds deposit antibodies against parasites and pathogens they were exposed to before egg laying into the yolk. In captive bird species, it has been shown that these maternal immunoglobulins (maternal yolk IgGs) can protect newly hatched offspring against infection. However, direct evidence for such benefits in wild birds is hitherto lacking. We investigated (1) if nestling Great Tits Parus major originating from eggs with naturally high levels of maternal yolk IgG are less susceptible to a common, nest-based ectoparasite, (2) if maternal yolk IgGs influence nestling development and in particular, their own immune defence, and (3) if there is a negative correlati…

Antibody injection in the egg yolk: maternal antibodies affect humoral immune response of the offspring

2010

Summary 1. In vertebrate species, maternal antibodies specific for the pathogens to which mothers have been exposed can be transmitted to offspring before birth. This is assumed to be adaptive as these antibodies can be essential in protecting offspring early in life before their own immune system is fully developed. However, fitness consequences in natural conditions and the long-term effects of these mechanisms have yet to be fully examined. 2. Exploring the ecological and evolutionary implications of such maternal effects requires experimental manipulations to avoid potential confounding maternal effects. In birds, maternal antibodies are transmitted via the egg yolk – a self contained e…

MATERNAL HIGH FAT DIET CONSUMPTION DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION: IMPACT ON INTESTINAL MORPHOLOGY AND FUNCTION IN PREWEANING OFFSPRING

2015

Different evidence supports an important role for maternal obesity in the development of childhood obesity and subsequent adult disease. This study is addressed to investigate if and to which extend maternal high fat feeding would induce compensatory and adaptative responses in gut predisposing to the eventual development of paediatric obesity. Adult female mice were divided into two groups fed with i) high fat (HF) diet and ii) standard chow (SC)diet, during pregnancy and lactation. HF mothers showed a significant weight gain, higher levels of blood glucose and an abnormal glucose tolerance compared to SC mother, indicating the establishment of metabolic syndrome. Then, offspring subdivide…

Maternal-fetal cross-talk: elucidating the role of mir-30d in endometrial receptivity and pregnancy outcome

2018

The role of maternal effects in host-parasite interactions: examination of the development of the immune defense in a colonial seabird, the black-leg…

2004

One of the main aims of evolutionary biology is to understand the mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Maternal effects occur when a mother's phenotype or her environment influence her offspring's phenotype. Despite the importance of such effects for the ecology of host-parasite interactions, their role has been relatively neglected to date. In this thesis, we examined how mothers influence the immune defense of their young in an environment that varies in space and time. This work has primarily focused on a colonial seabird, the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). Using this model, we have first shown that specific maternal antibodi…

The Most Invisible Maternal Experience? Analysing How Maternal Regret Is Discussed in Finland

2021

AbstractIn Finland, becoming a mother is often constructed as an individual choice that ultimately leads to personal fulfilment and happiness, despite the occasional ‘negative’ feelings associated with motherhood such as exhaustion, frustration and tiredness. In this cultural atmosphere, maternal regret continues to be a subject that is hidden, forbidden and rarely scrutinised. It is perhaps surprising that in one of the world’s most gender egalitarian countries, which is also perceived to be one of the best countries in which to be a mother, women still testify that motherhood is limited to survival. We argue that, somewhat paradoxically, discussing the negative emotions of motherhood migh…

Maternal parenting styles, homework help, and children’s literacy development in language minority and Finnish-speaking families

2017

The aim of this study was to examine the role of mothers’ (language minority mothers, LM, n = 49, and Finnish-speaking mothers, MP, n = 368) parenting styles and maternal help with their children’s homework in the children’s (mean age 11.43 years) literacy skills at fourth grade in Finland. In addition, the moderating effect of a child’s gender on this relationship was investigated. The results showed that the LM mothers used psychological control more than MP mothers. Furthermore, the more LM mothers used warmth and psychological styles of parenting, the more they helped their daughters, not sons, with homework. MP mothers’ parenting styles did not relate to their children’s reading and sp…
