A Novel Intelligent Technique for Product Acceptance Process Optimization on the Basis of Misclassification Probability in the Case of Log-Location-S…
2019
In this paper, to determine the optimal parameters of the product acceptance process under parametric uncertainty of underlying models, a new intelligent technique for optimization of product acceptance process on the basis of misclassification probability is proposed. It allows one to take into account all possible situations that may occur when it is necessary to optimize the product acceptance process. The technique is based on the pivotal quantity averaging approach (PQAA) which allows one to eliminate the unknown parameters from the problem and to use available statistical information as completely as possible. It is conceptually simple and easy to use. One of the most important featur…
Selection of time windows in the horizontal-to-vertical noise spectral ratio by means of cluster analysis
2016
The selection of the elementary analysis windows in continuous noise recordings for optimal estimation of the mean horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) curve is generally performed by visual inspection of HVSR curves considered as functions of time. Starting from full‐length records, HVSR curves are determined in consecutive time windows of appropriate lengths. Time windows with HVSR curves that are anomalous on the basis of a simple visual inspection are generally ignored in the computation of the average HVSR curve. It is often very difficult to optimize the selection of time windows to be used for the calculation of the HVSR curve representative of a site. The use of nonobjective…
The regression Tsetlin machine: a novel approach to interpretable nonlinear regression
2019
Relying simply on bitwise operators, the recently introduced Tsetlin machine (TM) has provided competitive pattern classification accuracy in several benchmarks, including text understanding. In this paper, we introduce the regression Tsetlin machine (RTM), a new class of TMs designed for continuous input and output, targeting nonlinear regression problems. In all brevity, we convert continuous input into a binary representation based on thresholding, and transform the propositional formula formed by the TM into an aggregated continuous output. Our empirical comparison of the RTM with state-of-the-art regression techniques reveals either superior or on par performance on five datasets. Thi…
Seismic behavior of structures equipped with variable friction dissipative (VFD) systems
2021
Usually, to mitigate the stresses in framed structures, different strategies are used. Among them, base isolation, viscous/friction/metallic yielding dampers and tuned mass dumpers have been widely investigated. Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVD) probably result the most diffused for the simplicity in the applications. However, these type of dampers request limited interstorey drifts to avoid dangerous effects. Further, they have an elevate cost. On the contrary, friction dampers are not so expensive but request high interstorey drifts to give a significant contribute in the dissipation of energy during an earthquake. In this paper an approach for the energy dissipation by friction, modified with …
Kick Detection and Influx Size Estimation during Offshore Drilling Operations using Deep Learning
2019
An uncontrolled or unobserved influx or kick during drilling has the potential to induce a well blowout, one of the most harmful incidences during drilling both in regards to economic and environmental cost. Since kicks during drilling are serious risks, it is important to improve kick and loss detection performance and capabilities and to develop automatic flux detection methodology. There are clear patterns during a influx incident. However, due to complex processes and sparse instrumentation it is difficult to predict the behaviour of kicks or losses based on sensor data combined with physical models alone. Emerging technologies within Deep Learning are however quite adapt at picking up …
Evaluation of a model of temporal weights in loudness judgments
2018
The onset of a sound receives a higher weight than later portions in time when its loudness is assessed, an effect commonly referred to as primacy effect. It is investigated if this effect can be predicted on the basis of an exponentially decaying function where the weight assigned to a temporal portion of a sound is the integral of this function over the segment duration. To test this model, temporal loudness weights were measured for sounds with different segment durations and total durations. The model successfully predicted essential aspects of the data.
Teaching Matters: Enjoyment and Job Satisfaction
2016
Teaching occurs in a complex and dynamic environment that involves other people—learners, their families and school authorities as well as the subject matter to be taught. Expectations towards the effects of teaching are high, though opinions about teachers may be harmful. What is a contemporary teacher like, then? The aim of this article is to present a portrait of an average teacher on the basis of selected empirical evidence from TALIS 2013 survey (OECD, 2014). Also teachers’ emotions and their relations with job satisfaction and overall success are discussed. Finally, empirical evidence from a case study on job satisfaction, enjoyment and success of Polish teachers of English is discuss…
Automatic Location of Sources of Electrical Activation from Electroanatomical Maps
2016
Electro-anatomical mapping is a widely used technique used by electrophysiologists to understand patient's activation pattern. The system measures activation time at different locations but does not provide information on underlying electrical pathways or triggering points, such as Purkinje-myocardial junctions or ectopic foci. We present a method to estimate the locations of Purkinje-myocardial junctions from a discrete set of endocardial samples. Using less than 1000 endocardial samples it can recover locations and activation times of the most influencing Purkinje myocardial junctions from Purkinje trees of up to 500 junctions. A simulation study revealed that using the estimated Purkinje…
Meridianos distintos (Jīng Bié) y sistema linfático, comparación anatómica y funcional
2016
The analysis of possible meeting points between Chinese and Western medicine makes an addition to the gradual progress towards mutual understanding and synergy of both disciplines. The description of trajectories and functions of the Divergent Channels seems to suggest certain parallels regarding western anatomy and lymph system function. From the anatomical perspective, the trajectory of the JīngBie resembles the arrangement and energy flux direction to the lymph system. Besides, the position of the main JīngBie points, such as “Departure points” and “Window of Heaven points” tends to match regions with a high presence of lymph nodes. Also, the JīngBie functions resemble the physiology of …
