In 6 of 7 acromegalic patients a single subcutaneous injection of 50 micrograms of a new octapeptide somatostatin analogue (SMS 201-995) reduced serum growth hormone (GH) from 30 +/- 12 ng/ml to 1.4 +/- 0.4 (mean +/- SEM). Serum GH remained below basal concentration for 9 h. In the remaining patient who had very high basal preprandial serum GH, SMS 201-995 produced a reduction in serum GH of only 20%. Plasma glucose concentrations were increased to the upper limits of the normal range when a high-carbohydrate meal was consumed 2 h after injection. Endotoxin inhibits gastric emptying in rats via a capsaicin-sensitive afferent pathway.

The effects of endotoxin on gastric emptying of a solid nutrient meal and the neural mechanisms involved in such a response were investigated in conscious rats. The intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of E. coli endotoxin (40 mug/kg) significantly reduced the 4-h rate of gastric emptying of a standard solid nutrient meal. Ablation of primary afferent neurons by systemic administration of high doses of capsaicin (20+30+50 mg/kg s.c.) to adult rats did not modify the rate of gastric emptying in control animals but prevented the delay in gastric transit induced by endotoxin. Test of multielement analysis of bone samples using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and anti-Compton spectrometry

INAA and anti-Compton spectrometry has been employed in the analysis of test bone samples. Validity and accuracy of the method were checked by the use of two biological reference materials procured from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA (NIST) and the International Atomic Energy Agency, Austria (IAEA). NIST 1486 Bone Meal (ca. 200–800 mg) and A-11 Milk Powder (ca. 200–600 mg) samples were irradiated in the 100 kW TRIGA Mainz reactor. Concentrations of 13 elements in both biological reference materials have been determined and were found in good agreement with the certified and provisional values.
