Co-occurrence of discourse markers in English : from juxtaposition to composition

Abstract In this paper, we report on a qualitative analysis of co-occurring discourse markers, that is, sequences of adjacent discourse markers that belong to the same unit but may express different functions. We examine several formal and functional features of these co-occurring strings on the basis of corpus examples extracted from conversational data in English. In particular, we focus on scope, meaning-in-context (or functions), syntactic category and position. Our analysis reveals several degrees of integration: differences in scope allow us to differentiate juxtaposition and combination of markers. Minimal forbidden words and symbolic dynamics

We introduce a new complexity measure of a factorial formal language L: the growth rate of the set of minimal forbidden words. We prove some combinatorial properties of minimal forbidden words. As main result we prove that the growth rate of the set of minimal forbidden words for L is a topological invariant of the dynamical system defined by L.
Collection Principles in Dependent Type Theory

We introduce logic-enriched intuitionistic type theories, that extend intuitionistic dependent type theories with primitive judgements to express logic. By adding type theoretic rules that correspond to the collection axiom schemes of the constructive set theory CZF we obtain a generalisation of the type theoretic interpretation of CZF. Suitable logic-enriched type theories allow also the study of reinterpretations of logic. We end the paper with an application to the double-negation interpretation.
A probabilistic meaning of certain quasinormal subgroups

Counting in the Two Variable Guarded Logic with Transitivity

We show that the extension of the two-variable guarded fragment with transitive guards (GF+TG) by functionality statements is undecidable. This gives immediately undecidability of the extension of GF+TG by counting quantifiers. The result is optimal, since both the three-variable fragment of the guarded fragment with counting quantifiers and the two-variable guarded fragment with transitivity are undecidable. We also show that the extension of GF+TG with functionality, where functional predicate letters appear in guards only, is decidable and of the same complexity as GF+TG. This fragment captures many expressive modal and description logics.

Following this evolutionary dynamic, the exhibition has thus forged an almost independent identity of the museum itself. In her dystopian dark comedy The Heart Goes Last (2015), Margaret Atwood openly refers to Jeremy Bentham’s concept of the Panopticon. The future world depicted in her novel is filled with violence and deprived of both human bonds and hope. Hence, being contained, monitored and — after Foucault — disciplined and punished appears to be the characters’ last resort. Surveillance tempts both sexes as it is politically correct and universal, and it does not privilege one group of people over the other. This paper reviews literature on traits and emotions focusing on both structure and management, or 'having' and 'doing'. The cognitive perspective of this paper implies that traits and emotions are viewed as provisions to frame people and their behaviours in situations in meaningful ways. The focus on the structure of traits thus implies considering the now broadly acknowledged Big Five model as a dimensional framework by which traits of people can be meaningfully organized. The article is an attempt to answer the question about the relation between tradition and the development of theological cognition. The church from the first centuries was aware that allegiance to the council tenets exceeds a technical repetition of council`s formulas.
