Patients' experiences of shoulder problems prior to and following intervention.

2011

Health can be viewed from several perspectives. It has been shown that impingement of the shoulder leads to functional inability and decreased life quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the complexity of the effect of shoulder problems and discern and describe what it entails to be a patient suffering from shoulder problems. The study delineated patients' situations prior to and following medical intervention. This study is qualitative, and the data were collected through focus group interviews. Interviews with 26 respondents aged 43-63 (mean age 53) were made in 2005-2007. The sample group consisted of patients with supraspinatus tendinitis receiving either conservative treatme…

Multi-Dimensional Interacting Constraints on Physical Activity Behaviours in the Finnish Population

2016

Finnish sports organisations, local and federal government, and healthcare organisations have widely adopted the World Health Organization and national recommendations for physical activity for different age groups. However, studies have indicated that only 46 % of 3-year-old preschool children, approximately 50 % of primary school students (7–12 years), 10–17 % of secondary school students (13–15 years) and 16 % of Finnish adults (20–54 years) attain those recommendations. In Finland there are 33,620 built sports facilities and over 9000 sport clubs, meaning there are many possibilities for physical activity, yet people are still rather inactive. In this paper we argue that availability of…

Affective (re)orientations in online discussions on the threat of violence posed by migrants

2020

Online discussions are rife with fear-evoking images and meaning making that highlight a perceived threat to the security of European nations and their inhabitants posed by migrants’ violence in the wake of increased immigration. This paper examines the role of emotions in shaping anti-immigration views as a response to the threat of violence attached to migrants in online conversations. Using a dataset of Finnish online discussion threads from 2015 to 2017 that were prompted by extensive media attention paid to various cases of violent crime in which migrants were suspects, we particularly analyse the affective dynamics of interpellation processes wherein discussants are invited to adopt a…

Appearance as the Arrival of the Future

2017

AMBIGUITIES of language often indicate a problematic subject matter. That is the case with the word "appear" (erscheinen). When I say that an acquaintance (or someone with whom I was previously unacquainted) "appeared" to me, in order to speak with me, the meaning is: he came to me, he showed up in my habitat, perhaps at my home. He did not only seem (scheinen) to be there; he really was there. When something appears to us, it does not only seem to be with us, it actually is present. Appearance and existence are here very closely connected. But on the other hand, my acquaintance still exists even when he does not appear to me. Whether that would still be true if he appeared nowhere whether …

Climate Change and Anti-Meaning

2023

AbstractIn this paper, we propose meaningfulness as one important evaluative criterion in individual climate ethics and suggest that most of our greenhouse gas emitting actions, behaviours, and lives are the opposite of meaningful: anti-meaningful. We explain why such actions etc. score negatively on three important dimensions of the meaningfulness scale, which we call the agential, narrative, and generative dimensions. We suggest that thinking about individual climate ethics also in terms of (anti-) meaningfulness illuminates important aspects of our troubled ethical involvement with CC and can make a fresh and fruitful contribution to existing discussions, which tend to focus on moral res…

¿Prudencia o Sabiduría? Sinonimia e interacción visual

2020

2018

Simone de Beauvoir perceives existentialism as a philosophy of ambiguity, suggesting that a man should reconcile the contradictions of the human condition. The philosophical essays of the author show the evolution of her thinking. Beauvoir discovers the paradoxes of existentialism, mainly the antimony between responsibility and powerlessness of an individual. Her work captures an image of reality while relativizing philosophical values and maintaining the opposites. Her texts show the ambivalent attitude of the author to existence. Thus, they reflect her point of view, according to which moral consciousness only exists when a person experiences some intellectual dissonance or a sense of fai…
