Need for Deprescribing in Hospital Elderly Patients Discharged with a Limited Life Expectancy: The REPOSI Study
2019
Objective: Older people approaching the end of life are at a high risk for adverse drug reactions. Approaching the end of life should change the therapeutic aims, triggering a reduction in the number of drugs. The main aim of this study is to describe the preventive and symptomatic drug treatments prescribed to patients discharged with a limited life expectancy from internal medicine and geriatric wards. The secondary aim was to describe the potentially severe drug-drug interactions (DDI). Materials and Methods: We analyzed Registry of Polytherapies Societa Italiana di Medicina I…
Epidemiological and molecular associations between central nervous system disorders and cancer
2021
The study of comorbidity is becoming a key topic in biomedical research, which is especially relevant in the context of population ageing. Comorbidity has profound implications for individuals, practitioners, and health care systems. As a consequence, increasing efforts are being made by the scientific community to characterize better how disorders relate to each other and to identify the factors producing these associations. Cancer and central nervous system (CNS) disorders are among the top leading causes of death and disease burden worldwide. In recent decades direct and inverse patterns of association between CNS disorders and cancer have been reported. However, observational studies ha…
Cardiovascular medication and intraocular pressure: results from the Gutenberg Health Study
2016
BACKGROUND Intraocular pressure (IOP) is well known to be associated with blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors. The influence of systemic cardiovascular, in particular antihypertensive, medication on IOP is still controversial. This study analyses the association between the use of cardiovascular medications and IOP in a large European cohort. METHODS The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based, prospective, observational cohort study in mid-western Germany. IOP was measured using a non-contact tonometer. The medication classes examined were peripheral vasodilators, diuretics, β-blockers (overall, selective and non-selective), calcium channel blockers, renin-angiotensin …
The relationship between demographic- and disease-related variables and health-related quality of life in patients with axial spondyloarthritis
2017
Background Axial spondyloarthritis (ax-SpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine causing pain, stiffness, loss in physical function, and fatigue. Therefore, the physical and psychological burden of having this chronic disease can reduce the quality of life. We aimed to explore the relationship between demographic- and disease-related variables and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with ax-SpA. Methods Demographic- and disease-related, HRQoL-related and treatment data were collected. Disease measures included the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), the BAS Functional Index (BASFI), the BAS Global (BAS-G) score, the Maastricht Ankylosing Spo…
Statin use improves the efficacy of nivolumab in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma
2022
Background: Statins are widely used in an ageing population, including subjects with solid malignancies. However, no conclusive evidence is currently available on their potential influence on patients' outcome. We aimed to assess whether statin exposure affects the survival of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) treated with nivolumab.Patients and methods: Medical records of patients with documented mRCC treated with second- or third-line nivolumab were reviewed at ten institutions from Italy, Spain and the USA. Patients were assessed for overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall clinical benefit. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to e…
Prescription drug use during pregnancy in France: a study from the national health insurance permanent sample.
2017
International audience; PurposeTo provide an up-to-date account of drug prescription during pregnancy in France from 2011 to 2014 using the permanent sample of the French national computerized healthcare database and with a focus on recommended supplementations, fetotoxic drugs and teratogenic drugs.MethodsAll pregnancies identified by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes list in the hospitalization database, lasting more than 9 weeks of amenorrhea and whose delivery occurred between 01/01/2011 and 12/31/2014, were included. Drugs delivered between the trimester before and until the end of the pregnancy were included. Drug exposure prevalence was calculated for …

Accepted manuscripts have been peer-reviewed and copyedited, but are posted online before technical formatting and author proofing. These manuscripts are not the final version of record and will be replaced with the final article (formatted per AJHP style and proofed by the authors) at a later time. Purpose The proceedings of an international summit on the current and desired future state of use of robotic systems to compound intravenous (IV) solutions are summarized. Summary The International IV Robotics Su…
Medikamentu un uztura bagātinātāju izraisītu aknu bojājumu pacientu klīnisko datu analīze
2018
Biodegradable collagen matrix implant versus mitomycin-C in trabeculectomy: five-year follow-up.
2015
Background Clinical studies comparing trabeculectomy augmented with Ologen implant (OLO) versus trabeculectomy plus mitomycin-C (MMC) show contradictory results. To obtain long-term data, we report an extended 5-year follow-up trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of OLO as adjuvant compared to low-dosage MMC in trabeculectomy. Methods Forty glaucoma patients (40 eyes) assigned to trabeculectomy with MMC or Ologen. Primary outcome: target IOP at ≤21, ≤17 and ≤15 mmHg; complete and qualified success endpoint rates. Secondary outcomes: visual acuity (VA), mean deviation (MD), bleb evaluation, according to Moorfields Bleb Grading System (MBGS); spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) bleb examination;…
