After the Sicilian Vespers, the Cathedral of Monreale was neglected because of the to lack of funds, due to the war between the Angevins and the Aragonese. In the 14th century the inhabitans of Palermo, popes and kings pointed out that the wonderful church built by William II was in bad condition, and they were afraid it would collapse. The funds for the restoration were not enough, because the archbishopric had to pay high royal and papal levies. The Chiaromonte, lords of Palermo, controlled Monreale and the assets of the diocese were administered by knights, merchants, and notaries of Palermo. Following the excavations of the "Castellazzo" fortress of Jato, it became necessary to revise the archaeological materials coming from excavation and reconnaissance in all those fortified sites that welcomed the Muslim population during the revolts between the last Norman and Swabian ages. Attention was thus focused on at least two phases in the construction of such fortresses, often simple towers rather than real castles, corresponding to the beginning of the Norman domination and the Federician period.

Pour les besoins de l’étude géotechnique, six sondages ont été creusés dans et autour de l’ancienne cathédrale de Cavaillon en février 2020. Ils avaient pour objectif de comprendre les désordres structurels observés sur l’édifice en mettant à jour les fondations des différentes constructions (chapelles, chevet, nef et annexe). Compte-tenu du contexte archéologique, le Service Régional de l’Archéologie de PACA a prescrit leur suivi archéologique. L’objectif était de documenter les niveaux d’occupation mis au jour sans détruire les vestiges remarquables, en particulier les maçonneries et les sépultures.
