TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SUSTAINABLE CITY
2013
This contribution is about the enhancement of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage and acknowledgement of environmental sustainability principles. It deals with the relationship between new ways of conceiving urban environments and new strategies for urban regeneration in northern and southern Mediterranean cities. Our main research hypothesis will show how the cultural heritage is now the force for change in Mediterranean cities, and involves stakeholders, craftsmen, local inhabitants and consumers. The case studies of Tunis and Marseille will help to address the issue of the enhancement of historic city centres and the redevelopment of abandoned industrial areas. In Tunis we will…
Il colore delle idee
2018
The myth of white in architecture has ancient roots partially sprouting from a classic ideal revived by modernism that now seems to acquire new values. Also in light of its current global dissemination – from the US to Europe and Japan – white architecture cannot be considered as a fad, nor can it be reduced to a mere Mediterranean character. Fran Silvestre Arquitectos’ production exemplifies the complexity of this phenomenon with its presence in the contemporary international scene and a range of works, mostly housing designs, of remarkable quality. The trajectory illustrated in this book partially results from the re-reading of the modern as well as Mediterranean architectural tradition, …
Città bianca
2018
Mito e principi dell’architettura bianca
2022

2008
I will not speak either of architecture or landscape, because I think is more usefull yo clarify what are the conditions of a real disciplinary advance. The Mediterranean has been and is the “physical nexus” of the coastal settlements. But, even in the past, the Mare Nostrum should not have been so unified as history, sometimes, and the myth, especially, have been handed down. So we should focus on somethimg that will provide reasons and opportunities to mitigate difference and under take a process aimed at a shared interest. For this reason, I refer to the European program of Hidhways of the Sea (2004(, because I think that, starting only from the sea and from its ability to give a meaning…
By the occasion of the recent exhibition on the architecture in Palermo Tra terra e cielo on Vincenzo Melluso, the author tells, through the photography of Giovanni Chiaramonte, of two buildings that interpret the Apulian territory and define the Mediterranean land- scape, interacting with each other at completely different dimensions: …
Achievements, flaws, and future goals of scientific research on green roofs in mediterranean cities: first feedback from ongoing meta-analysis
2022
Current scientific research points out the low number of papers focused on the environmental patterns in Mediterranean urban areas, where green infrastructure is still strongly underrated by scientists as well as by politicians, planners and decision-makers. In this paper, the results of a simple meta-analysis on the topics treated in scientific literature about the Mediterranean green roofs (MGRs) are presented. Our review pointed out the strikingly higher attention paid to building materials, energy efficiency and hydraulics with respect to life sciences (including basic ecology, horticulture, soil, plant and animal sciences) in the target paper selection. In fact, despite the availabilit…
