Genetic structure and differentiation from early bronze age in the mediterranean island of sicily: Insights from ancient mitochondrial genomes

2022

Sicily is one of the main islands of the Mediterranean Sea, and it is characterized by a variety of archaeological records, material culture and traditions, reflecting the history of migrations and populations’ interaction since its first colonization, during the Paleolithic. These deep and complex demographic and cultural dynamics should have affected the genomic landscape of Sicily at different levels; however, the relative impact of these migrations on the genomic structure and differentiation within the island remains largely unknown. The available Sicilian modern genetic data gave a picture of the current genetic structure, but the paucity of ancient data did not allow so far to make p…

Cabbage and fermented vegetables: from death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

2021

International audience; Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1 R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance …

Chapter 3 patterns and thresholds of runoff generation and sediment transport on some Mediterranean hillslopes

2005

Abstract Runoff and sediment transport data obtained from hillslopes in two limestone areas in southeast Spain are analysed in order to define spatial and temporal thresholds for sediment movement at the patch scale under Mediterranean semiarid and subhumid climatological conditions. The data discussed in this paper include a 7-year series of runoff and sediment collection in open Gerlach plots. The 136 events are analysed in relation to characteristics of rainfall, soil and soil surface components. In both cases slopes behave as a patchwork of runoff and runon areas and the size of the runoff or runon patches being dependent on the climatological conditions. These control the hydrological …

Seasonal and depth related variation of parasite communities of Notacanthus bonaparte Risso, 1840 (Notacanthiformes: Notacanthidae) over the northwes…

2019

Abstract In the last decades fishing activities have spread from coastal to deeper waters with serious effects on the deep-sea ecosystems and its fauna, which are considered to be highly susceptible to these impacts. The implementation of protection measures is necessary, but the knowledge on this biome is scant, and often limited to species of commercial value. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first survey to describe and analyse parasite infracommunities of the deep-sea fish Notacanthus bonaparte sampled from three bathymetric strata between the upper and lower slope in the western Mediterranean Sea (Balearic Sea, Spain). The aim of this work was to assess the effect of hos…

Applications of a remote sensing-based two-source energy balance algorithm for mapping surface fluxes without in situ air temperature observations

2012

Abstract The two-source energy balance (TSEB) model uses remotely sensed maps of land–surface temperature (LST) along with local air temperature estimates at a nominal blending height to model heat and water fluxes across a landscape, partitioned between dual sources of canopy and soil. For operational implementation of TSEB, however, it is often difficult to obtain representative air temperature data that are compatible with the LST retrievals, which may themselves have residual errors due to atmospheric and emissivity corrections. To address this issue, two different strategies in applying the TSEB model without requiring local air temperature data were tested over a typical Mediterranean…

Dietary patterns and the risk of colorectal adenoma recurrence in a European intervention trial

2005

The relations between individual foods and nutrients to colorectal tumours are conflicting. Few studies have taken into account the interdependence between individual components of diet and their possible interactions. The aim of the study was to examine the associations between dietary patterns and the risk of colorectal adenoma recurrence in the European fibre-calcium intervention trial. Among the 640 patients with confirmed adenomas at the index colonoscopy, 592 had an initial dietary assessment using a diet history questionnaire. The present analysis was restricted to 277 men and 165 women without history of adenoma prior to the index colonoscopy and who completed the study. The main en…

A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Population-Based Study on Prenatal Levels of Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet: Maternal Profile and Effects on the…

2018

The Mediterranean diet (MD) is a dietary pattern with important benefits. The objectives of this study were to assess the adherence to the MD among pregnant women in Valencia (Spain) and characterize the pregnant women according to their level of adherence. Finally, we aimed to examine the role of MD adherence during pregnancy in the anthropometric development of the newborn. The study included 492 pregnant women who were followed at La Fe Hospital in 2017. The self-administered &ldquo

Distribution of risk factors, plasma lipids, lipoproteins and dyslipidemias in a small Mediterranean island: The Ustica Project

2003

Background and Aim: The populations of the Mediterranean area have a low incidence of cardiovascular disease (CHD). The aims of this paper are: 1) to present demographic data of the population of Ustica, a small island in the southern part of the Tyrrhenian sea that has reduced communications with the mainland and a diet presumably rich in fish; and 2) to evaluate the distribution of risk fa tors, plasma lipids, lipoproteins and dyslipidemias in this population. Methods and Results: We invited all of the free-living resident population aged more than 14 years (about 800 individuals) to participate in the study; 57 responded, for a participation rate of about 73%. The distribution of cardiov…

Long term successful weight loss with a combination biphasic ketogenic mediterranean diet and mediterranean diet maintenance protocol.

2013

Weight loss protocols can only be considered successful if they deliver consistent results over the long term—a goal which is often elusive, so much so that the term “yo-yo” is used to describe the perennial weight loss/weight regain battle common in obesity. We hypothesized that a ketogenic Mediterranean diet with phytoextracts (KEMEPHY) combined with the acknowledged health benefits of traditional Mediterranean nutrition may favor long term weight loss. We analysed 89 male and female obese subjects, aged between 25 and 65 years who were overall healthy apart from being overweight. The subjects followed a staged diet protocol over a period of 12 months: 20 day of KEMEPHY; 20 days low carb-…

Plasma viscosity and related cardiovascular risk factors in a Spanish Mediterranean population

2006

Plasma viscosity (PV) constitutes an independent important predictor of initial and recurrent cardiac events and mortality. It has been suggested that there is a geographical variation in PV values related to coronary event rates. Little information exists regarding PV in Spain. Therefore, our objective was to determine PV in a large sample of randomly selected subjects from the Spanish population and to study which demographic or cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) influence levels of PV in this population.1277 subjects (503 males, 774 females) aged 43+/-14 years (range: 20-70) were randomly selected from an Eastern Spanish population. These subjects were free of cardiovascular diseases and…
