Micropropagation of juvenile and adultDigitalis obscura and cardenolide content of clonally propagated plants
1991
Cultures ofDigitalis obscura L. were established from axillary buds of mature plants or leaves of seedlings obtained under aseptic conditions. Explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium containing benzyladenine and/or naphthaleneacetic acid. Shoot proliferation from axillary buds was not affected by seasonal fluctuations in the stock plants and increased relative to the cytokinin concentration, but auxin reduced the multiplication rate. Differentiation of somatic embryos and adventitious buds from cultured leaves required naphthaleneacetic acid alone or combined with benzyladenine, respectively. Cardenolide pattern and content of the regenerated plants were determined by high perf…
ChemInform Abstract: Syntheses of Some Biologically Active Compounds from Stilbenes Isolated from the Bark of Picea abies.
2010
From the four stilbenes 1–4 isolated from the bark of Picea abies seven compounds 5–11 were obtained by hydrogenation or permethylation. 1H-, 13C-NMR and mass spectra were used for their characterization. The antileukemic activity of each compound was preliminary tested. Some compounds were further tested for their anti-HIV activity.
Distribution ofLeprariain Latvia in Relation to Tree Substratum and Deciduous Forest Type
2012
The aim of the study was to evaluate the distribution of Lepraria lichen species in dry deciduous forests, in relation to tree substratum and forest characteristics. In total, 34 localities with 1020 trees (13 tree species) were studied in different parts of Latvia. Lepraria spp. were found on 642 trees: L. eburnea on 8 trees, L. incana on 80 trees, and L. lobificans on 568 trees. Lepraria eburnea was recorded for the first time in Latvia. Tree species, tree bark crevice depth, inclination, pH and forest type were the most important variables explaining the presence of Lepraria species. Lepraria incana was associated with Quercus robur and Tilia cordata, while L. lobificans was associated w…
Incidence of heavy metals in the application of inorganic fertilizers to rice farming soils (Valencia, Spain)
1996
The presence of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn in different inorganic fertilizers (urea, calcium superphosphate, iron sulphate and copper sulphate) are evaluated and the contribution of these metals to the soils in this way is estimated. The studied zone corresponds to rice farming and is at the north of Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain). The results obtained show that Superphosphate is the fertilizer that contains the highest levels of Cd, Co, Cu and Zn as impurities. Copper sulphate and iron sulphate have the most significant contents of Pb, and are the only fertilizers in which Ni is detected. The most significant additions of impurities that the soil received by agricultural pr…
Metal specificity of the Ni(II) and Zn(II) binding sites of the N-terminal and G-domain of E. coli HypB
2021
HypB is one of the chaperones required for proper nickel insertion into [NiFe]-hydrogenase. Escherichia coli HypB has two potential Ni(II) and Zn(II) binding sites—the N-terminal one and the so-called GTPase one. The metal-loaded HypB–SlyD metallochaperone complex activates nickel release from the N-terminal HypB site. In this work, we focus on the metal selectivity of the two HypB metal binding sites and show that (i) the N-terminal region binds Zn(II) and Ni(II) ions with higher affinity than the G-domain and (ii) the lower affinity G domain binds Zn(II) more effectively than Ni(II). In addition, the high affinity N-terminal domain, both in water and membrane mimicking SDS solution, has a…
Micropropagation of Lavandula latifolia through nodal bud culture of mature plants
1996
Cultures of Lavandula latifolia Medicus were established from axillary buds of mature field-grown plants. Explants were initially cultured on media with two different macronutrient combinations and benzyladenine or kinetin added either individually or with naphthaleneacetic acid. Subsequently, explants were subcultured in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 20% coconut milk, 0.57 μM indoleacetic acid and 8.88 μM benzyladenine. Shoot proliferation from axillary buds was not affected by seasonal fluctuations in the stock plants but depended on the macronutrient composition and on the type and concentration of cytokinin tested. Best results were obtained in explants initially cultured…
Micropropagation of adultLavandula dentataplants
1998
SummaryA protocol for in vitro propagation of adult Lavandula dentata plants has been achieved. Cultures were established by placing nodal segments on Murashige and Skoog medium containing BA, KIN, and NAA. Highest shoot multiplication rates were obtained when explants grown in the presence of 5.0 μM BA or 20 (JLM KIN were transferred to medium with 8.8 μM BA and 15% coconut milk. Multiplication efficiency through subcultures was significantly affected by the cytokinin concentration in the initial culture medium. Subculture reduced drastically the final number of shoots produced on nodal segments isolated from shoots grown in the presence of 2.0 μM BA or 40.0 μM KIN. Shoots were easily root…
Role of Surface Chemistry in the Superhydrophobicity of the Springtail Orchesella cincta (Insecta:Collembola)
2020
Collembola are ancient arthropods living in soil with extensive exposure to dirt, bacteria, and fungi. To protect from the harsh environmental conditions and to retain a layer of air for breathing when submerged in water, they have evolved a superhydrophobic, liquid-repelling cuticle surface. The nonfouling and self-cleaning properties of springtail cuticle make it an interesting target of biomimetic materials design. Recent research has mainly focused on the intricate microstructures at the cuticle surface. Here we study the role of the cuticle chemistry for the Collembola species Orchesella cincta (Collembola, Entomobryidae). O. cincta uses a relatively simple cuticle structure with prima…
Direct electrochemical generation of organic carbonates by dehydrogenative coupling.
2018
Organic carbonates are an important source for polycarbonate synthesis. However, their synthesis generally requires phosgene, sophisticated catalysts, harsh reaction conditions, or other highly reactive chemicals. We present the first direct electrochemical generation of mesityl methyl carbonate by C–H activation. Although this reaction pathway is still challenging concerning scope and efficiency, it outlines a new strategy for carbonate generation.
