International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research consensus position statement: nutritional medicine in modern psychiatry
2015
In recent years, there has been an unprecedented growth in both the quantity and methodological quality of research directed at exploring the relationship between nutrition and mental health. Indeed, the strength of data has now afforded nutritional medicine a place in the mainstream psychiatric discourse (1). Robust associations have been established between nutritional quality and mental health, with the bulk of this evidence indicating a protective effect of healthy diets on depressed mood (2), and the newest research supporting a detrimental impact of unhealthy diets on the mental health of young people (3,4) and adults (5,7). There are also convincing data supporting the application of…
What we learn about bipolar disorder from large-scale neuroimaging
2020
Abstract MRI‐derived brain measures offer a link between genes, the environment and behavior and have been widely studied in bipolar disorder (BD). However, many neuroimaging studies of BD have been underpowered, leading to varied results and uncertainty regarding effects. The Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta‐Analysis (ENIGMA) Bipolar Disorder Working Group was formed in 2012 to empower discoveries, generate consensus findings and inform future hypothesis‐driven studies of BD. Through this effort, over 150 researchers from 20 countries and 55 institutions pool data and resources to produce the largest neuroimaging studies of BD ever conducted. The ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Workin…
Silmitön ja väkivaltainen : erään mielisairaalapotilaan ura 1900-luvulla
2018
Kysymyksiin vastaamiseen tarvitaan kontekstin, suomalaisen psykiatrian, tuntemista.
Erityisesti mielisairaalaan joutuminen on monelle häpeällinen kokemus, josta on vaikeaa puhua. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen mielisairaalakokemuksiin liittyvää häpeää psykiatristen sairaaloiden potilaiden, omaisten ja henkilökunnan kirjoittamien muistojen valossa. Analysoin muistelijoiden kuvaamia häpeän kokemuksia kuvaten häpeän kerronnallista rakentumista muistoissa. Pohdin mitkä tekijät ovat lisänneet, mitkä puolestaan helpottaneet mielisairaalakokemuksiin liittyvää häpeää. Eri muistelijaryhmien häpeän kokemukset ovat luonteeltaan erilaisia – potilaiden muistojen osalta niissä koro…

An Integrated Theory for the Accumulation of Mentally Ill Offenders and the Effect of Realignment in California
2018
High mental illness prevalence in California state prisons has drawn much attention of scholars and policymakers in the past three decades. Various studies suggest that the mental illness prevalence in prison has increased from 0.14 to 0.3 from 1987 to 2014. The problem with a high concentration of mentally ill prisoners culminated when the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) was sued for the violation of inmates’ rights under the Eighth Amendment in the early 1990s. Consequently, CDCR’s health care was placed under Federal receivership to reform prison health care. Receivership is an uncommon remedy adopts by a federal court when other court orders have failed to…
THE ROLE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN MANAGEMENT OF BODY WEIGHT IN PSYCHOTIC SUBJECTS
2013
Psychotic subjects live an unhealthy lifestyle that tends to reinforce the metabolic syndrome (1). It is known, indeed, that antipsychotic treatments stimulate appetite (2) and induce weight gain (3). Several therapeutic approaches including psycho-educational behavioral interventions and exercise training programs have been elaborated in order to manage antipsychotic-induced weight gain (4,5). Wirshing et al. (2006) elaborated a specific project based on oral presentations in order to educate psychotic subjects about lifestyle changes they can adopt to reduce weight gain. They showed that patients with mental illness are able to benefit from educational presentations about nutrition and a …

Maltrato y enfermedad mental.
