Pro gradun tarkoituksena on selvittää oululaisten ja raahelaisten kauppa-alusten miehistön nuorimpien jäsenten merille lähtöä ja urakehitystä ensimmäisen viiden vuoden aikana. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, minkä ikäisiä olivat nuoret merimiehet, millaiset sosiaaliset lähtökohdat heillä oli, miksi he pestautuivat, millaista elämä oli laivalla ja miten heidän uransa kehittyi jatkossa. Tarkastelu kohdistuu viiden vuoden jaksolle vuosina 1858-1863 ja mahdollisuuksien mukaan joidenkin miesten uraa on seurattu pidemmälti. Artikkeli on perustutkimusta, joka keskustelee arjen ja tilallisuuden sekä osin ympäristöhistorian ja kokemushistorian kanssa, käsitellen Uudenkaupungin rauhanneuvotteluita 1721. Aiemmin rauhanneuvotteluita ja niiden tuloksia on tutkittu poliittis- ja tapahtumahistoriallisesti. Artikkelissa keskitytään alkuperäislähteitä hyödyntäen rauhanneuvotteluihin niin fyysisenä kuin sosiaalisena ympäristönä myös luonnonolosuhteet huomioiden. DNA barcoding reveals different cestode helminth species in northern European marine and freshwater ringed seals

Three subspecies of the ringed seal (Pusa hispida) are found in northeastern Europe: P. h. botnica in the Baltic Sea, P. h saimensis in Lake Saimaa in Finland, and P. h. ladogensis in Lake Ladoga in Russia. We investigated the poorly-known cestode helminth communities of these closely related but ecologically divergent subspecies using COI barcode data. Our results show that, while cestodes from the Baltic Sea represent Schistocephalus solidus, all worms from the two lakes are identified as Ligula intestinalis, a species that has previously not been reported from seals. Warmer climates boost cyanobacterial dominance in shallow lakes

Dominance by cyanobacteria hampers human use of lakes and reservoirs worldwide. Previous studies indicate that excessive nutrient loading and warmer conditions promote dominance by cyanobacteria, but evidence from global scale field data has so far been scarce. Our analysis, based on a study of 143 lakes along a latitudinal transect ranging from subarctic Europe to southern South America, shows that although warmer climates do not result in higher overall phytoplankton biomass, the percentage of the total phytoplankton biovolume attributable to cyanobacteria increases steeply with temperature. Technological change and wage premiums amongst high-skilled labour

This study examines the impact of the steam engine, which produced wide and long-lasting economic growth from the 19th century to the early 20th century, on the wages of high-skilled seamen in the Swedish merchant maritime shipping industry. The analysis focuses on the years 1869–1914, which was a transition period during which traditional sailing ships were replaced by steam-powered vessels. The study shows that all high-skilled occupations received wage gains under steam technology. The evidence on wage polarization amongst the high-skill occupations remains subtle, although there is certain evidence that wage premiums vary by occupation. peerReviewed
