Gypsy endogenous retrovirus maintains potential infectivity in several species of Drosophilids.

Abstract Background Sequences homologous to the gypsy retroelement from Drosophila melanogaster are widely distributed among drosophilids. The structure of gypsy includes an open reading frame resembling the retroviral gene env, which is responsible for the infectious properties of retroviruses. Results In this study we report molecular and phylogeny analysis of the complete env gene from ten species of the obscura group of the genus Drosophila and one species from the genus Scaptomyza. Conclusion The results indicate that in most cases env sequences could produce a functional Env protein and therefore maintain the infectious capability of gypsy in these species.

RNAs of different shapes and sizes, natural or synthetic, can regulate gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Circular RNAs have recently appeared to be more widespread than previously thought, but their role in prokaryotes remains elusive. International audience; Six monoclonal antibodies specific for the major capsid protein of rotavirus, VP6, previously characterized, were tested in a biological assay for their capacity to block the transcriptase activity associated with the single-shelled particles. Current views suggest that the non-structural protein 4 (NSP4) of rotavirus and the enteric nervous system (ENS) participate in water secretion and diarrhoea. In the present work the role of nitric oxide (NO) in rotavirus infection and disease has been studied in vitro, mice and humans. Acetylcholine (ACh) acts as a local cellular signaling molecule and is widely expressed in nature, including mammalian cells and embryonic stem cells. The murine embryonic stem cell line CGR8 synthesizes and releases substantial amounts of ACh. An advantage of this approach versus the use of two separate duplexes is that only two strands, as opposed to four, are competing for entry into the RNA-induced silencing complex. Inducible nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS) has been identified as a marker and mediator of disease in human colonic inflammation and carcinogenesis. Accordingly, identification of mediators that trigger iNOS in colon carcinoma/epithelial cells is an important topic of current research. Here we demonstrate that interleukin (IL)-22, a newly described member of the IL-10 cytokine family, potently synergizes with interferon (IFN)-gamma for iNOS expression in human DLD-1 colon carcinoma cells.
