Weighting non-covalent forces in the molecular recognition of C60. Relevance of concave–convex complementarity

Abstract Organometallic perovskites are one of the most investigated materials for high-efficiency thin-film devices to convert solar energy and supply energy. In particular, methylammonium lead iodide has been used to realize thin-film perovskite solar cells, achieving an efficiency higher than 20%. Different fabrication procedures based on the spin-coating technique have been proposed, which do not ensure homogenous morphologies. Growth of two-dimensional Au patches in graphene pores: A density-functional study

Inspired by recent studies of various two-dimensional (2D) metals such as Au, Fe and Ag, we study the growth of two-dimensional gold patches in graphene pores by density-functional theory. We find that at room temperature gold atoms diffuse readily on top of both graphene and two-dimensional gold with energy barriers less than $0.5$ eV. Furthermore, gold atoms move without barriers from the top of graphene to its edge and from the top of 2D gold to its edge. The energy barriers are absent even at the interface of 2D gold and graphene, so that the gold atoms move effortlessly across the interface. A water-soluble hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene was prepared and shown to undergo ordered columnar self-assembly either in water solution or bulk and therefore served as template for the fabrication of porous silica with aligned nanochannels.
In-line fiber-optic sensors based on the excitation of surface plasma modes in metal-coated tapered fibers

Abstract Metal-coated tapered fibers are reported as refractive index sensors based on the resonant excitation of surface plasma modes supported by the metal coating. The devices are easy to fabricate and constitute an alternative to metal-coated side-polished fibers and to other sensors made up of bulk components. We report the fabrication and power transmission properties of quasi-circular devices and asymmetric devices. Both sets of devices can be operated as wavelength output sensors, as well as amplitude output sensors. The transmittance of quasi-circular devices is polarization independent and it changes more than 30 dB as a function of external refractive index.

Assisted phytostabilization of soil from a former military area with mineral amendments.

Abstract Due to the presence of toxic pollutants, soils in former military areas need remedial actions with environmentally friendly methods. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to investigate the aided phytostabilization of multi-heavy metals (HMs), i.e. Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, in post-military soil by Festuca rubra and three mineral amendments (diatomite, dolomite and halloysite). The amendments were applied at 0 and 3.0% to each pot filled with 5 kg of polluted soil. Background: The genetic background may influence methylmercury (MeHg) metabolism and neurotoxicity. ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters actively transport various xenobiotics across biological membranes. Objective: To investigate the role of ABC polymorphisms as modifiers of prenatal exposure to MeHg. Methods: The study population consisted of participants (n = 1651) in two birth cohorts, one in Italy and Greece (PHIME) and the other in Spain (INMA). Women were recruited during pregnancy in Italy and Spain, and during the perinatal period in Greece. Design of a virtual instrument for water quality monitoring across the Internet

Abstract This article presents the design of a new distributed and multi-platform system for water quality monitoring, enhanced with powerful Internet capabilities. The measured variables are temperature, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity. The signal-conditioning block has been simplified through the use of software routines for thermal compensation, hence, reducing the cost and dimensions.
