Polysarcosine (pSar) was one of the first polymers synthesized in a controlled living manner, but it was only recently when it was reconsidered as a promising alternative for poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in biomedical applications. Despite receiving more and more attention, very little is known about the solution properties of pSar, such as coil dimensions and thermodynamic interactions. Equilibrium swelling and solvation studies on crosslinked polyacrylamides

Polyacrylamide (PA) crosslinked with four different crosslinking agents, triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (NNMBA), hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA) and divinylbenzene (DVB), with mole percents ranging from 5 to 20, was prepared by solution polymerization and subjected to swelling and solvation studies. Rheological properties of progesterone microemulsions: Influence of xanthan and chitosan biopolymer concentration

In this preformulations study, rheological properties of microemulsions with progesterone (1%) were studied to analyze the effect of xanthan and chitosan at different concentrations (0.5–3%). Steady shear and oscillatory rheological properties were analyzed using a controlled stress rheometer. Steady shear data were satisfactorily adjusted to the Carreau model. For all preparations, shear-thinning behavior was observed. Zero shear viscosity (η0) increased with the biopolymer concentration. The results from dynamic experiments showed the behavior of all preparations with xanthan gum and those of chitosan to be characteristic of weak gels and liquid-like solutions, respectively. Prediction of the flow curves of thermoplastic polymer/clay systems from torque data

Abstract The aim of this work was to determine some relevant rheological parameters of polymer/clay systems using mixing torque and mixing speed data obtained during processing in an internal mixer. The method used was originally proposed by Marquez et al. for monophase polymers, and is here applied to polymer/clay systems for the first time. Summary Changes in the microstructure of complex sulfide ores resulting from reactive thermal treatments in either H2 or N2 were investigated qualitatively by combined scanning electron microscopy and X ray microanalysis, and quantitatively by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and mercury pycnometry. Perimeter leakage current in polymer light emitting diodes

Observation of leakage current paths through the device perimeter in standard poly(phenylene vinylene)-based light-emitting devices is reported. Perimeter leakage currents govern the diode performance in reverse and low positive bias and exhibit an ohmic character. Current density correlates with the perimeter-to-area ratio thus indicating that leakage currents are mainly confined on polymer regions in the vicinity of metallic contact limits (device perimeter). © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Determination of biological characteristics of Tunisian Artemia salina populations

In this study, Artemia salina cysts collected from four Tunisian hypersaline environments were characterized using biometrical, biological and biochemical descriptors. Biometrical analysis revealed that the mean diameter value ranged from 220.25 to 237.76 μm, for the untreated cysts, from 199 to 224.52 μm for decapsulated cysts and that the chorion thickness ranged from 6.62 to 10.58 μm. 48 h after hatching, Artemia from Sebkha El Meleh, Sebha Moknine, Sfax saltworks and Sahline saltworks presented a hatching percentage of 52.7%, 53.75%, 70.16% and 43.74%, respectively. Cementing agents involved in the macro- and microaggregation of a Mediterranean shrubland soil under laboratory heating

The heating effect on aggregation and cementing agents of a Mediterranean soil was studied in two fractions (macro- and microaggregates) in different environments: under Quercus coccifera soil (UQ), under Rosmarinus officinalis soil (UR) and between plants or bare soil (BS). Samples were heated under laboratory conditions at different temperatures (220, 380, 500, 750 and 1000. °C) to establish their effects on the studied soil properties by comparison with unheated control samples (25. °C). Origin of the low-frequency plateau and the light-scattering slow mode in semidilute poly(ethylene glycol) solutions

Polyelectrolytes in dilute solution: viscometric access to coil dimensions and salt effects

Copolymers of acrylamide (AM) and diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC), differing in molar masses M (52.3 to 227 kDa) and degrees of charging y (0.2 to 0.6), were studied with respect to their viscometric behavior in dilute aqueous solutions containing variable amounts of NaCl. Complementary measurements were performed on a Brookhaven 90 plus particle size analyzer. M dominates the intrinsic viscosities [η]. For the viscometric interaction parameters B this is only true for large concentrations of extra salt. [η] and B as a function of solvent salinity follow Boltzmann laws.
